Found it! it was in the footnotes "Overstruck on a worn English halfpenny of George II. 31mm copper" Also known overstruck on worn George III farthings and shillings "These are pocket pieces made by the staff engaged upon the minting of these tokens for their amusement at the SOHO mint, Birmingham" David

Best reference I have is The Encyclopedia of the coins of Malaysia Singapore and Brunei 1400-1967 by Saran Singh. download Remick's British Commonwealth Catalogue is unhelpful and refers the reader to Pridmore (I don't have a copy) Could be a trial, but it's reported that the Cock with 4 tail feathers is considered extremely lucky, so maybe a gambling token or souvenir piece interesting one though David

I think your problem HAX is that there is unlikely to be a Malacca coin specialist on this site? There may be someone with a general interest in coins of the whole region? Maybe scott knows something. He has worldwide interests. The design looks like 1 keping Singapore merchants' tokens from the early 1830's, these were struck in copper at the SOHO mint in Birmingham, normally about 21mm diameter, about 1.5 to 1.7 gm A trial on a 26mm lead blank is reported, as are normal sized proofs in copper and brass Can you upload a better picture please,? hard to make out the date, What size and weight is it, and is it copper? David

Some attempts at creating a 1933 penny are more successful than others David

I think that's a fair assessment. Most of us are in 3. but working and dreaming for 2. I'm a "1" but have a few which put me in "3", "2" is a dream for me too David

Or you could stumble on an unassuming wooden box like this one (nb the video link doesn't work properly) David -
Looks like 2+D, N over sideways N (Z)... barely visible but the die crack by the date is a giveaway. Not quite as rare as people make out but a nice example and price probably about right... I agree, N over Z, the other clue if you look carefully is the re-entered O in ONE, the two always seem to go together (Gouby 1860 JA). Mine has the same die crack also David There's another (low grade) one here if anyone needs an example, once seen they are very easy to spot David

F.165 I make it. Streets ahead of mine though. yes, mistyping on my part F164A in any condition is still on my want list, as is F169 David

Strange that a 1d collector didn't know what he had.Or maybe its an inheritance.Even if it was the latter the actual collector would surely catalogue what he had. Just bought his 1908 penny Fr169 mule, much better than the one I have David

George V reverse ghosting
davidrj replied to Peckris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
No, nor me. If I ended up with a BU ghosty and and a BU without, of the same date, I'd probably create a new variety and keep both. Although it gets a footnote in Peck, the 1918KN bird's foot is only a dicky die, but it gets the same treatment in my collection. A slot for 1918KN, and a slot for 1918KN BF. A well struck ghosty is fine by me, Any serious collector of George V knows that the obverse die tweaks were an ongoing battle by the Mint to reduce ghosting, to me excluding examples of ghosting from a collection seems daft. The ones without ghosting in some years can be considered the freaks David -
Not an established Ebay dealer, feedback of just 10 Seems to have acquired a half decent collection if you look at his other listings David

I vaguely remember a similar situation with a bar stocked with lots of different single malts! On a serious note Britain needs to make its mind up, Join the club and play with the rules everyone else has agreed to, or get out. Sitting on the touch line complaining that everyone is playing football when we want to play cricket is nonsense David

One of the commoner types, Gouby's BP1874H J+g Younger head, sea crosses linear circle see 1874 varieties Looks cleaned to me David

We devalue our currency to base metal + paper

Food for thought here -
Can anyone help with this one please? I acquired it some time ago in a mixed lot, my initial reation was 'some idiot has silver plated a scarce coin' and it went into my box of junk and oddities Loooking at again I realized it was heavier than a normal Kruger penny - approx 10g as opposed to 9g, it is magnetic so I'm assuming it is Nickel, and the coin has good lustre that doesn't show in a scan, the edge has marks which suggest it was mounted at some time in the past Internet searches have proved fruitless, so ;- unrecorded pattern, off-metal mistrike, or fantasy piece? Any help from S.African experts would be appreciated David

Or a £5 bank bag of mixed bronze that has been sitting in the back of a safe since the mid 1880s would suit me, hours if sorting! -
Is it me or does this coin look odd?
davidrj replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Maybe just that the coin is so small an 0.5 mm misalignment looks huge on a Maundy penny but the same 0.5 mm would look insignificant on a crown sized piece
