I've got both Freeman and Gouby, but I still haven't got my head round all the penny dies for 1860 to 1862 David They are not too difficult when you see good pictures of EF coins, it's when all you have are worn specimens that are in the price range most of us can afford David

Nice! Never seen one like this, probably a clogged die I have a similar French 5c dated (1)900 David -
agree the obverse is horrid, and at £450 too rich for my budget; so will have to stick to the one I have, GF

1893 Penny and 1918kn penny
davidrj replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
That's going a bit far Peter! A genuine VF 18KN should fetch £25 or so - there must be MANY collectors who want "above average" but can't afford EF or higher, and would cheerfully pay that. And I'd say the VF 1893 should at least be a few quid too. I think you're being too pessimistic. If you're not, then I will happily pay 99p to buy a GVF 1918KN off you I'm still looking for a half decent 1919H -
You'd need to be a cockney to understand that one. Got you Threepenny bits, gits, right? Bristols?

Define "recognised"! 1887 and I have exchanged views, pictures, and expertise (his more than mine), and the upshot is that it should appear in an upcoming book he hopes to write on the subject. We both agree that it is a previously unknown variety. However, getting other people interested is a MAJOR task. When you consider some members of this forum have orgasms over a nearly-disappeared half colon, you would think there would be more enthusiasm really. It only goes to prove the old adage "MY variety is interesting and endlessly fascinating. Yours? Pah." I think this true in all areas of collecting. The way to succeed is to collect something no one else does; write the standard work, then make a bundle selling you collection Before Peck and Freeman. very few people collected copper and bronze. The little book by ?Harris reprinted by Spink "European Copper Coins" recommmends them as cheap items for children to collect. The Peck & Freeman varieties ar here to stay, only time will tell whether the Gouby classification gains credence David

Yes I know the problem. As a kid, I nagged folk to save their bun pennies from change; a side effect living in the then thriving port of Liverpool, I got given a lot of foreign pennies too - they all need completing Australian pennies probably won't ever be completed, but Ireland penny and Argentine 2c done, but still 4 missing from the complete run of French bronze 10c, and ..................... david -
If you bid 25 Euros it did not get through as I bid €22 and the next bid was €253!!!! I ony spotted it at 1min to go, and i attemped a snipe €25 to bid at 3 secs to go, maybe I was too late or it went in after than the €253. Was gobsmacked when it finished
-
Wow! Hows that for last minute bidding! My €25 snipe didn't stand an earthly 1860 with missing colonafter F:D

1937 Penny Die Variations
davidrj replied to RobJ's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Spot on! I completed the date set of bronze pennies 40 years ago, culled from circulation and mainly in lousy condition. Upgrading and looking for varieties within the date series keeps me interested, and yes, I know damn well I'm never going to complete Freeman, let alone Gouby David -
