Three quid down the Swanee...
davidrj replied to Peckris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It will make it something, I'm not sure it will be English as we know it Thanks all, translations pretty much as I worked out the gist, an appropriate post given this topic title " Three quid down the Swanee..." I'll just write this one off! I'll still keep buying from overseas sellers, I often get good stuff at reasonable prices, and I've had very little difficulty with either overseas payment or postage -
Most of us here have experimented how to get best images from our coins; using either flat bed scanners or cameras with varying decrees of success I came across this link microscope, this looks as though it may be useful for examining die varieties or errors, but probably not for imaging whole coins (unless they are very small). I suspect it may be useful to the bank note collector, but I foresee problems for examining with both depth of field and reflections from items with lustre. Has anyone here tried this or similar products? - if so please post some pictures.

Three quid down the Swanee...

hopefully this link works 1916 penny Sadly I'll never know - just got this from the seller "es gibt leider ein Problem mit der Münze - ich finde diese nicht mehr. Möglicherweise wurde sie von mir doppelt eingestellt, jedenfalls ist sie nicht mehr auffindbar. Ich habe Ihnen zudem keine andere Ersatzmünze von 1916 anzubieten. Gerne überweise ich den Betrag umgehend retour, falls Sie schon überwiesen haben. Möglicherweise haben Sie auch einen Ersatzvorschlag aus den von mir eingestellten Münzen, es können dann als Entschädigung auch gerne 2 Münzen sein. " My German isn't good, but I think he's not got the coin he advertised. -

2009 coins in change

Pennies seem to be turning up fairly regularly, but I've not seen any other 2009 denominations. But I did get a 1986 Commonwealth Games £2 in change today, showed very little wear and had green smears both sides, these came off with quick dip in acetone. Cant remember the last time I saw a nickel brass as opposed to the bimetallics in circulation. -
David Groom's excellant new book arrived yesterday, and the bird's foot is illustrated! Interestingly he states it is found in lots of years for GeorgeV pennies. I wonder if others are associated with die cracks, and whether there is any correlation with the degree of ghosting on the reverse.

My most recent copy of Le Franc is 2006 1882 mintage 1.1M one of the commoner mintages for this series, the rarer dates can fetch very high prices B €4, TB €12 TTB €20 SUP €45 SPL €100 FDC 160 Now if anyone has a 1875A or 1878K they don't want....

I don't have a copy of Peck to check, but I think it must be I hadn't noticed it before I took the pictures last night, I think it's fairly common, at least one on the current batch on Ebay Clashed die rather than ghosting methinks, my coin 2 was probably the die about to die

Hi I've just joined this forum, so I thought I would say "Hello" I started collecting coins as youngster in the run up to decimalisation, I was one of those kids who pestered bank tellers for a 5/- bag of pennies with my pocket money! I almost made the complete date run of pennies (but not all the varieties), the only one I never found in circulation was a 1951. Never did complete the halfpenny series, and farthings were long gone when I was hunting from circulation. The coins were put away and forgotten for many years - study, girl friends, wife, mortgage, familly & career took precedence for both time and cash! Semi retirement and my discovery of Ebay rekindled my interest. I'm still a penny freak, but my main collecting area is now to get all the foreign ones, not just Ireland and the commonwealth but the 30mm bronze issues from the Latin Union and further afield. French bronze 10 centime pieces are my current project. David
