  1. Another 1877 with an even more pronounced flaw (seller's pic) Interesting that the 1 of the date appears to be above the inner line. I'll post better pictures when it arrives
  2. I think the Crown Dependencies, - Jersey, Guernsey, IOM, Gibraltar, St Helena & Ascension, and the Falkland Islands nominally each have their own currencies, not the Pound Sterling but in practice parity with it. Cayman Islands uses the US dollar I think
  3. Looks like a nasty scratch on the reverse, I'ld wait for a better one.
  4. This variety has recut waves in addition to the difference in date width, Does anyone know of any other significant penny date width variations post EVII?
  5. Looking at my 1904's I have two distinct date widths David Groom lists 5 variations, including open and closed 9's and one with the 4 tilted David
  6. Sad to see that Chet Krause has died, see http://secure.numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=28265 I bought an early version of his World Coins back in 1979, a tremendous leap forward compared to the books I had relied on in the local reference libraries when I was a kid - (we didn't have Google back then) The Krause guides are still my first step when trying to identify an unknown foreign type, though I always take pricing with a pinch of salt
  7. I'm a foul weather collector, when the sun is out I'm in my garden, that means I've been quite busy with my coins this summer
  8. Anyone any ideas on this holed 1873 penny? I think it's probably post mint damage, but looks like an extra fold of drapery over the shoulder
  9. By it's very nature, this thread of mistrikes and flaws usually features low grade examples, so thought this composite of two nice 1929 obverses, missing waves and normal, should go here though maybe this variety is better described as missing rocks
  10. There's a forum member ?Gary who is very good at overlays, anyone know how it's done?
  11. ....amazing what a good clean can do, sorry guys but I think there is no difference Not going to make my fortune on this one David
  12. Agreed, I'll give it an acetone bath, and will rescan it with another similar grade one with identical illumination.
  13. Everything else looks normal to me, a bog standard circulated 1931. I'm 90% convinced that missing waves are a result of grease fill rather than die alteration/wear/other damage and may possibly occur in all dates 1927-36. The 1934 will probably stay at a premium as it featured in a high profile sale and is to be included in the new Freeman. I'm waiting on delivery of a high grade 1929 which looks interesting. As for the 3, I have no answer at present, I don't think it's an optical illusion due to the surrounded verdegris, but... I'm hoping forum members will take the time to look in their caches of GV pennies to see if anything similar turns up
  14. I posted this 1931 penny the other day in the die clogs thread as a "missing waves" variety, Just noted the date looked odd comparison of dates with a normal 1931 That upper loop of the 3 looks decidedly larger to me, comments welcome
  15. Very true, always difficult to compare coins photographed under different lighting conditions, don't like the thumb print on the second one though
  16. Another penny on a streaky flan with congruent lamination flaws, this time a scarce BP1879Cb F98
  17. A 1922 penny with both twos filled
  18. wtf? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1948-very-very-rare-one-penny-actually-had-a-valuation-on-this-coin-over-1-700-/182164243297?hash=item2a69d5c361:g:A18AAOSwqBJXWJPg
  19. 2 genuine F148 1897 High tides in very similar grades finished today on Ebay This one was unsold at £59.99, whilst another went for just £6.05 after 5 bids, interesting that this very scarce variety invokes such little interest
  20. I was watching this one, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162079854220?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT went for £205
  21. Not as pronounced as on other dates discussed previously, but here's a 1931 penny with missing waves Can we now stop calling "missing waves" as true varieties and recognise them as simple die fills in area of the design most likely to act as a pinch point for any excess gease to collect.
  22. Torrential hail here at the moment
  23. I don't think we can put this down to recycled shell casings. Just very poor quality control of blanks - there are lamination flaws congruent with the brassy streaks on this 1936 penny
