    Pennies - Edward VII

Thanks, here's both sides Bought a few years ago, vendor listed it as a 1915 without noting the variety. Sadly scans of shiny coins never come out as they look in hand. the notched tooth is not as pronounced as of the 1916, so possibly die damage that progressed. There are references to recessed ears without the damaged tooth, but can't ever remember seeing a picture of one. This exercise has reminded me to upgrade my standard 1915 sometime

    Pennies - Edward VII

If you hold the coin to view from the edge, the recessed ear variety shows a distinct concavity rather than the normal convex bust. here are my pennies - top 1915 normal and recessed, 1916 below normal and recessed. The "Recess" is best seen in the area behind the ear lobe. Far easier to spot in photos of worn toned examples

    Pennies - Edward VII

Thanks for that Gary, best article on threepences I've seen, may even think about getting some, they seem relatively cheap
  4. It came today, poor thing has had a tough life - surface corrosion, most of which has been helpfully removed with Brasso Definiely a Freeman 1, Gouby 1860 D, so fills a gap. Not bad for £8.73 plus £10 postage, the rest of the lot (mostly Brassoed) went straight into the bin except for this one A very worn example of the 1909 Ndot - so two gaps filled I'm a happy bunny paying far less than my actual bid David
  5. Just bought a job lot of vickie bronze, gambling this is an F1 - Link. Looks like raised lines on shield, but been fooled by eBay pictures before

To Acetone or not to Acetone?

You'll be fine with anything listed as greater than 99.5% purity - that will be the minimum specification, and wont leave any residue. AR grade - 100% pure for analytical purposes is unlikely to be listed on eBay and is way over the top for our usage

    1913 pennies

I've got an average circulated one already, just need to keep looking as very few 20th C varieties are ever listed as such

    Me too, please David
  16. A thread for halfpennies, which seem to be the Cinderellas of the bronze series, perhaps because they generally have suffered far more wear than the popular pennies and farthings
  17. Interesting. Looks like we have a clear progression of die damage in our combined examples
  18. here's what he wrote mine appears to be the barred 5 he describes. It's the 1920 filled 2 that he shows 3 stages of fill for, he also lists a filled 2 for 1921 but no illustration
  19. Another ugly one, but only 99p - finally got a filled 5 1915 penny David

EU referendum - in or out?

An interesting article on sovereignty, from the IN standpoint, Here

EU referendum - in or out?

EU citizens have a right to live and work here, so it's muddying the waters to talk of illegal immigrants How many of the million Britts living in Spain are able to speak or write in Spanish?

EU referendum - in or out?

I'm no lawyer, but it seems to me we should work within the system to amend the law, throwing away legal protection of the basic rights of millions is not the correct way to deal with a handful of scumbags

EU referendum - in or out?

As an internationalist by nature, I'm definitely in the IN camp, but I'm seriously depressed by the low standard of debate from both sides, not helped by the media's obsession with personalities rather than the issues

EU referendum - in or out?

Neither the European Convention on Human Rights nor the European Court of Human Rights are EU bodies. The UK was signed up to them (and in the case of the Convention largely created it) before it ever joined the EU and the UK would still be a party to them even if it left the EU.
