A "safe" coin as an investment?
choolie replied to Mongo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
You should also bear in mind that there are risks associated with coins as as there are with other investments but which are different. If you have a high value coin it could get damaged or stolen, you can insure against this and use careful storage but this will add to the cost of the investment. Fakes have been mentioned already and if there are a lot of fakes around of a coin it can make purchasers more wary and make even the good coins more difficult to sell and this can lower the value. This will be less of a problem with lower value coins since nobody will bother to make counterfeits. Provenance and thorough record keeping are probably also more necessary at the higher end. -
Yes I do find it amazing that nobody else has come up with an auction site with lower fees. when you consider the size of ebays market there is plenty for a competitor to undercut. Maybe I should do it.

I think anything below VF is not really worth collecting. Just my humble opinion.

Goldberg Auction Madness? Or Jubilee Coins Gone Wild!

Bubbes run and run, best wait until it gets really big -
I only bring this up because I have seen a couple of threads going this way lately. I used to post on another forum the Banjo Hangout, but on there you weren't allowed to post on religion or politics. I wasn't aware of it until I Posted something about julian (can't remember his surname) of wikileaks.I asked why my thread had been stopped and I was told that before my time they had had dedicated forums to religion and politics but that the debates had frequently degenerated into slanging matches with constant insults and abuse. I took their point but I thought it sounded quite lively and regretted that we could not continue on the subjects. Indeed very often threads would become political or refer to religion and would go on for quite some time before the censors stepped in. Anyway I am pleased to see there is no censorship here and look forward to our debaTes degenerating into whatever

Religion and politics

Is that not the life coach/motivational evangelist tony robbins? What's he doing getting involved with such negative political stuff?? -
Apparently gold has been in the doldrums for a few months now. The 38 day cycle is at its nadir. The price of gold is oversold and it has always bounced back from levels as low as this over the past year or so. Gold bullion coins will reflect any up move better. I got this from the investors chronicle website to which I subscribe. I've got some money on it Hope it happens

The big problem is the all the debt we keep hearing about. The easy way out is to inflate it away by printing more money which is what they are doing and will continue to do. This does make your cash savings worth less but things which have a value independent of cash Like coins, antiques, gold and silver will be something of a hedge against inflation notwithstanding any particular issues those items may be subject to. I don't think we'll see the stock market rising again significantly until it has priced in the greeks exiting the euro and a complete default on all their debts and even then there is portugal italy and spain to think about. So I would advise: keep collecting coins and enjoy spending your money rather than saving it

I would argue that science in fact has little to offer us at this point in history, University specialism is such that it takes years of study to partake in any of it's latest advancements because they are so complicated. I would ask what is it going to give us now and I would question whether the technological-consumerist society is indeed something we should be grateful for. Academics seem to me a slightly funny geeky bunch and not particularly well rounded people. They also come up with stuff that is equally bizarre as religion and I think I am right in saying in quantum theory and suchlike the laws of the universe don't apply. They also come up with nonsense statements such as "when time Began" which is a grammatical error. The buddha by contrast asked how can this life be and what should I do because he could make no sense of the world to find the answer to this he went and sat under a tree for 3 days and it came to him naturally. the buddha is cool.

Religion and politics

you are taking the position of Thomas Hobbes who would agree with you, john locke on the other hand would say man in the state of nature is peaceful and good. I think both Hobbes and Locke are cool they are philosophers from a few hundred years ago for anyone who doesn't know. -
Ah but science itself is just another way of interpreting the world. It has proved useful no doubt and is currently the dominant paradigm which means that all the money and research goes into it but who's to say this will always be the case. Even richard dawkins states that he does not apply his arguments to Pantheism and other more esoteric spiritual ideas.

but the letter would be faked too.

Has anyone told lockdales of these complaints? maybe they will take the feedback on board. Just sending a link to this thread might be enough.

Rarest Circulation Coin?
choolie replied to PatrickCoin's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Funny I can remember this thread starting 3 years ago; I take a long break from here and it reappears now. Just a pointless observation. -
I've noticed that I start collecting things then find that I have spent far too much on one item and then have no money to do anything else, so I lose interest and move on. I went from coins to Czech Glass items to Inuit sculptures and now back to coins again. I have also accumulated rather than collected musical instruments throughout my life. which has become a collection 2 guitars: 3 banjos (you can never have too many banjos) and a synthezizer all of which were very expensive and which my musicianship don't deserve. my best banjo:

Counterfeit Edward VII 1905 ‘Research’ Shilling (Fake, Forgery, Co
choolie replied to Coinery's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
1905 must be a rare date then, for somebody bothering to fake one? -
Yes well traders do put patterns and cycles over the graphs which come from various theories, I am not sure where this one came from. The point is if people start using these patterns then they become more significant just from the fact that they are being used. I believe this one is used by traders in the gold markets so that is why it counts. But I shall check and see if I can come up with any more information about it.

I am restating my question on the end of Paulus' 1904 Florin topic since I did not get enough replies . I am just saying that the edward vii Florin has a fantastic design on the reverse. it is really making me want one. My 2010 copy of spink is telling me I should of been able to get a 1902 example for £55 in EF or £95 in UNC back then Which is just about in my price range and the cheapest date of the series. Paulus (thanks) pointed out that the one I was looking at; Florin looks like it has been cleaned and pointed out this one. There is also This. Thoughts comments and advice please:)

that's right in fact in reality all areas of the civil service exist to keep people employed and invoved in the economy, it usually has nothing to do with whatever that department is supposed to be doing.
