azda replied to Coinery's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Well its not an auction house i've used or ever intend to use now, thanks for the info, although it amazes me that they're still in Business. -

What? Warwick and Warwick? Aye, judging by what John has mentioned -
Forgery Elizabeth I Martlet Shilling

Sounds like one to steer clear of then -
I agree, I don't think it is acceptable to delay posting once the grading/slabbing process is completed, after all we prepay SD postage. In my case I received them 2 days after they were marked as 'Completed', so that was good. The one i sent was finalised last week and still waiting on it

If CGS wish to improve then like any company they should Listen to constructive comments, it would be silly not to. My only critisism is why it takes so long to post bacj, Stuart mentioned it was another month before he got his back. Surely they can post at least once week if the Coins are slabbed?

Thoughts on Grading
azda replied to Bill Pugsley's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Me too. And if everyone thought like us, it really wouldn't matter how CGS grade coins - people would buy purely on what the coin looks like. Or if its one they must have -
Paul i think you'll find that CGS graded Coins will sell fairly quick (my experience anyway) I'm now worried though what my Nirthumberland shilling will grade as (bought as EF(

im going with the hearts, or no hearts coins......were nearly there and we havent seen it yet...man were good......... Semée, feel me, touch me, heal me... lol, to think that Tommy was about that all along, I shall probably have very weird dreams tonight now! Didn't you realise that "We're not gonna take it" referred to eBay fees and policies? And 'Fiddle about' was really about certain coin sellers! I'm your wicked Uncle Martin... And i'm the Thorn in his side -
Cleaning Coins...really that bad...?
azda replied to Colin88's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I so wish all these little fragments of info could be bottled together in one place for future reference. I'll remember seeing this post a year from now, but won't have a chance in hell of finding it here in a thread on cleaning coins! Really useful pictures! I've been copying and pasting off anything interesting re G5 and G6 as it arrives on the forum, as there so many pearls that get lost otherwise, but where do you stop? Best to copy and paste the info into your own document Stuart, including the pictures of the edge lettering above so you can look back on it. It's the same with the Northumberland Shillings, many many fakes, but i'm sending the one i just got off to CGS, i'd rather sell it with their label of authenticity. Nice website btw -
I recently read somewhere that people living on the South coast (white cliffs of Dover area) that their mobile phones were switching to a french Network lol

peck did you see the time team programme where they were excavating a moat at a castle in Derby, a metal detectorist was checking out the spoil pile from the moat and found a henry V noble.....it looked as minted.....fantastic. the guy was shaking with nerves.....a terrific find, apparantly he donated the coin to the local museum. series 15 episode 6 for those who may be interested Ski I saw that and it was in the best digs programme to, it was pulled out live if i remember correctly while Tony was yapping on the camera -
Cleaning Coins...really that bad...?
azda replied to Colin88's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Yikes..............Is that from the dealer? Here's one that's not been cleaned or polished, quite a difference -
The estimate on the Exeter D30 crown was halved on the day with a saleroom notice because it was plugged at 6 o'clock. It might be done very well, but once known gives the seller an uphill battle to raise the price buyers are prepared to pay. What was the original estimate Rob? £600-800 reduced to £300-350 £360 hammer

Cleaning Coins...really that bad...?

If left for to long in the cleaning agent, silver can come out looking flat, like it looks like a stone, a dull grey colour................Just a word on the Gothics to, IF you should decide to buy one, make sure the dealer is very reputable, and to get a 2nd opinion, i'd send it to CGS for grading and authentication, even dealers can sometimes get it wrong, and with the amount of money that you can spend on one of these you would'nt want to know 5 years down the line that it's a fake -
i lifted this from an email baldwins put out this morning....ngc really should get in a uk coin expert. And they're not wrong either
-
I will be doing Peter, but going to send it to CGS first due to the amount of forgeries of the Northumberland. The 1935 Rocking horse proof i showed in the aquisition of the week thread is there just now
-
You should have bought the previous lot - much nicer. Just checked, and i did win it

This coin sold at DNW today for a nice 1800 quid and here's one i have that's been sitting around the bay for a while at less than half of DNWs price, i cannot see much difference in grades, can you? It'll be getting submitted to the next DNW sale if that's the price they're getting

Plugged or not, i think its a quality coin, i'm not sure it will affect its value greatly, but we'll see.

Is the difference that huge?
azda replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I'm struggling to see any difference in the OBVs, obviously My picture is massive and will show warts an all, but the wear on the laurels on both Coins look the same to me -
Get yourself to the WRL website Stuart, you can have your pick of hammered there so i hear:)

You should have bought the previous lot - much nicer. And more expensive, i did'nt have any intention of buying a Northumberland, it was'nt on the cards at all. I still don't knowi if i got it or not, results say i did but looking at what i won says i did'nt. I also got lot 341
