  1. Charles II Crowns are notorious for poor hair detail. I'd give that a NVF.

I note that he is careful not to proffer a genuine numismatic grade for this one (which should of course read 'a very common coin in Fine'), unlike many of his other (also over-graded) offerings, only 'very high', therefore far more subjective ... I have noted in the past that he seems to combine clever photography, tilted angles, and sales patter, to achieve a top price, caveat emptor indeed He was once respected amoungst forum members who have previously bought from him. As said in a previous post, good coins are becoming harder to obtain, hence now the spin from this seller for crap coins.Anyone who is a serious collector can see it's not a very high graded coin........Only the ebay prey will buy

...and the fact that it has the large head obverse that didn't appear until 1889. I suspect that Dave has that clincher up his sleeve! Maybe better to let people bury themselves than let others do it for them

  5. Its maybe a sign of the times that good coins are harder to come by.........I'm not a huge fan of CC as i bought about 4 and sent 1 back from the 4........They were obviously at one time a bigger dealer than they are now. Poor grading will always come back to haunt anyone, good grading will only enhance a reputation and repeat business Couldn't agree more Dave, my favourite dealers for accurate grading are our very own Rob and Michael Gouby, I have had issues with many well known others! Problem being Paul, that good coins will cost top end and perhaps where copper123 is not prepared to go, you have to decide eventually. Mr Gouby has an 1875H penny which i have an issue with his grading on, I had a much better one but he's grading his as EF, in my mind it's no chance in hell as being EF. His price 750 quid, i sold mine to a forum member for 400 I have been pleased so far with my first few purchases from Michael, most of which I saw 'in the flesh' at his shop ... I think you are a strict grader which is a good thing, but I have yet to buy from you! Here is my first purchase from Michael which perhaps colours my judgement!: Described as nVF and £210, which I thought was an extremely good buy ... other members' opinions may differ! I did visit him recently and he was upping his prices, stating that he could no longer buy the same coins in the same grades for what he was selling them for. And I have yet to/may not ever get into copper/bronze, which is undoubtedly a different area of expertise! Only going by personal experience of course, have been happy with John Newman lately (as I read so have others), while I feel Colin Cooke, Bucks Coins and INGRAM offerings are consistently over-graded and/or overpriced ... also noting that more and more 'bricks and mortar' / traditional dealers are listing on the Bay! Well i'd agree with everything you said in your post, maybe where buyers are maybe forgetting that coins are getting more expensive, especially in high grades. Nice Crown to, and Michaels take on higher prices are probably correct, he's a lot more to pay than me. I do a bit of buying and selling as a bit of fun, others do it as a living, they have more overheads. Ingrams, Buckcoins (which i've already proved on the forum has upped grades on purchases) plus CC in my opinion certainly do overgrade. Its a tough world out there, for a dealer to buy a coin at what he regards at overprice he then has to add a half grade/grade in order to make money (does'nt apply to everyone) You as a buyer have to decide if the grade is correct, and even if you think it is, does'nt mean the seller will accept an offer. Its certainly a tough world in the coin world right now, lots to consider, and homework to do.....................

So i had to ask the question............... Dear lucido_8, I'm assuming this has been date altered from the 1889? Reply no date change...it is an 1887 coin - lucido_8 So replied Dear lucido_8, Really? How would you explain the rubbing around the 7 in date? Strange no? I really dont know why anyone would change a 9 to a 7 when the 1887 is valued lower. It could be a jewellers test mark to see if it is full silver. Still a nice coin and worth a fair bid. kind regards Rob - lucido_8

  9. You sound like an ebay buyer who seems to want a good coin for buttons. If you want said coin, look around and see if you can get the same for cheaper.........If not, and you like it then buy it. Quality coins will always cost cash, higher grades especially. You want a high grade coin that suits your collection then its entirely up to you at the end of the day, you can always sell off the coin it's to replace for 14 quid P.s, see next post
  10. Eye Appeal is probably lost on some people, especially people who buy from eBay . A majority of collectors on the forum do however like eye appeal, Peter, Peckris and myself are 3 examples.

    Just starting a collection

Hello and welcome. It's maybe better to focus on one thing at a time........Time and money will always restrict the average collector. Take your time and look at what sort/type coins interest you then focus in that area of collecting. Ask yourself what you want to eventually achieve in collecting, is it for the retirement or because you love coins, many questions only you can answer, forums members can only help in other respects, but always enjoy the coins you buy..... Many books are avaliable on the subjetc, some written by members here. The banner at the top of the site will show you some that are very helpful. If in doubt, always ask, it can get a bit fiesty here, but we mean no harm, just watch out for the old guy called Peckris, he bites
  15. I missed out on an 1852 threepence recently, i wanted to make a bid, but the grade quoted and start price did not do it any favours even if there was only 11-20 known
