Advice on coin prices for a newbie?
azda replied to Mongo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks! I like farthings too, and pennnies, and halfpennies, and sixpences etc. etc.! I think that I will just buy any coins that I really like the look of at the moment, then down the line a bit see how I feel about specializing in certain denominations. I might go for a nice grade coin of every denomination (that I can afford) and see them in the flesh, im sure there will be one that really catches my imagination Or you might try an example from every monarch. Then an example of every denomination from every monarch. Then every variety. And every year. Then upgrade the Fs to VF+. Help me someone, PLEASE help me!! You've dug your hole Paul -
Why would this Half Guinea be losing its colour?

I'd expect it on ailver, but gold? A Gold proof would be reflective, still not entirely convinced -

I think you'll find (joke grading apart) that the gold is not losing its colour. It's the effect of photo'ing through the slab, and if you look at the second pair of pictures taken from a greater distance, the gold shows its true colour. To be honest Peck, the 2nd pair of pictures, and i'm now talking about the OBV one, does'nt look as shite as it is close up, so it must be the EF stated on the coin. No seriously, i was joking there. I don't personally believe that it's the slab, why would the REV slabbed picture show some greying around 2 parts of the coin and not the complete coin? Why would'nt the same greying or discolouring not show on the OBV if it were just the slab? -

Coin in Fake slab is exactlywhat ithought, i also thought fake coin hence it being in said fake slab. And its certainly not Even borderline EF, OBV is more Fine, but strange that the curls behind the ear are not as worn as the rest of the coin. -

Either can i, hence the reason the population report would be interesting. The REV losing its gold colour is whats baffling -
GRADING looking back a few years
azda replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I would agree with all above gradings. Annes hair detail is one point of grading on the OBV and garter on the REV. 1st post pics you can see the garter as somewhat worn along with hair details on the OBV pictures. 2nd post pictures, hair deatils and garters are quite fully struck, so i'd give a thumbs up to all those grades.Buying the coins if rare items would'nt matter a jot on grades, it could be a Fine, but fetch way over what you'd expect to pay for that grade if its a rare coin. -

Thanks again! I have made a donation to the North area charity for you. I will let you know when the coins arrive. A forum member kindly informed me you are a trusted coin dealer, so I googled your username and found your website. Mongo, just underneath where John (argentumandcoins) has written you'll see his link to his website, no need to google, just click on the link and it takes you there, along with other member who have websites. Just don't click mine, there's nothing there as i'm a lazy bar steward -
Why would this Half Guinea be losing its colour?
azda replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
American AU is our EF, but no way on gods green earth is that EF. Nonsense, of course it is. Any idiot can see it's Err Fine with the reverse probably Good Err Fine. I don't understand how PCGS, even with their grading system could possibly grade this as an EF. Maybe checking the number against the population report would shed some light? Anyone got acess to PCGS population reports? -

Neolithic mans weapons were surely for hunting John Not for sticking it into the neighbour, thats what eventually happened when the neighbour was caught in the cave with neolithic mans woman

I think what John meant was by the missing 12 years was that JC could'nt manage Liverpool when he's in his pampers, mind you i don't think many can manage Liverpool with an incontinence bag right now either.

Apologies, Richard, I'm not ignoring you, I just haven't had a chance to use the laptop today and checkout your suggestions! I have been working from the phone today, which doesn't give me all the full website features, settings etc! What phone are you using coinery? If the iphone it has an app for forums called IPB, this gives you full website functions, but its shite when predictive messaging kicks in and you don't check it before hand -
The word swastika is an ancient Sanskrit word (svastikah) which roughly transltes to good luck or well being. Since its use by the Nazi party, its original meaning has pretty much faded into the distance and more often than not it is looked at as being a racist symbol, quite the opposite of its original meaning pre 1930's. Some take the shape as being 4x letter L's. Love, Luck, Life and Light. Good info just.me, thanks. You learn something everyday here

Question for the Hammered boys
azda replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I was actually thinking it was a decent example apart from the clipping, its been graded as EF (American) and were looking for top Geld, hence the reason i asked before plunging or not, so i'll hold fire. -
I understood the Name swastika to be associated with the nazis, i'm sure the symbol was'nt always known as swastika?

One for Debbie perhaps, although she may need to open the purse a little wider or raid the husbands pockets when he's asleep http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1671-Charles-II-SILVER-Crown-Unique-LOVE-Token-LARGE-COIN-/320903405878?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab7556136
