Can anyone help with this head type?
azda replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Welcome back John. Thanks for the confirmation. I was using Spink 2011 and ESC but it was still difficult to determine which head type, now i'm only quoting the Spink 2011 here which states its 3906A it also says "uncertain to exist as normal coin or proof?" So now it exists apparently although no price is quoted for this type. So should this now go into unconfirmed varities lol I think you can forget what Spunk says about this coin Dave. You have to remember that they are not experts in the field of varieties and they are not producing a reference book, merely a price guide. It isn't too long since that they totally arsed up pictures for the 1897 high tide penny and I had quite a few punters that year telling me they had one because it was the same as the picture in Spunk. In their defence it is a massive undertaking to compile the yearly price guide, trying to keep on top of market trends and new discoveries. Peter Davies and before him Seaby/Rayner have identified this type and I think I would trust their tomes a good deal more! I can confirm this - I got the 'high relief portrait / recut portrait' George V varieties put into the Spink book, and sent them scans of both types of 1921 shilling obverse (nose to S or VS) and they've got the two types the wrong bl**dy way round Then maybe Peckris, they also have those numbers wrong, as the 3906A is definately the coin we're talking about in this thread, unless they've adjusted numbers somewhere, but 3906A is the A6 type of extreme rarity, which incidently i bought -
Hmmmmmmmm, what did you CLEAN your coins with John, its certainly not a good idea to clean coins. Mintmarks are on the REV of the coins. The 1937 i assume is of the Paul Von Hindeburg, all 1937 mintmarks are of minimal values, with 40 euros being top price for top grade. 1 Mark 1907 has a few good prices, but depends on state and mintmark, same goes for the 2 Mark, that will also depend on state and mintmark, the mintmark on the 1926 is on the OBV (front) just above the laurel wreath. If you can find the mintmarks and maybe upload a couple of pix of each coin it would be more helpful determining price

Just another question on this OBV/REV 1861 no Initials on OBV/REV and 15 leaves, is it OBV 5 REV F?

Had ip board for a while, nice wee app tho -
I have the German bible on these coins, the 1939 2 Reichsmark mintmark E is the one you'd be looking for, in highest grade value is 130 euros, other mints are on average 25 euros in highest grades, the other you have i'm not sure what it is, so if you have a picture it would be helpful. Not sure where Sion got her mintmark values from, but those are wrong

Well i kinda thought Spink was out of touch with this type considering Rayners ESC identified it, but Spink also identified it in their 2009 book yet in 2011 cannot, althought in 2009 the have no price guide, just quotes it as extremely rare, 2010 there's not even an entry, only for the proof of the same type and 2011, their quote what i quoted from their book. They really should keep up with themselves. ESC does say that its an R2 so pretty pleased with the find. Surprised there's not much excitement about it though, although i assume it's not to everyones taste. Spink does quote the A5 though at 450 quid in VF so i wonder what this would fetch considering its rarity. -

There's an Extremely rare 1879 A7 according to Spink (3907A) - but you're right, the differences are very subtle, and beyond me I'm afraid. My type collecting doesn't extend thus far. The Extremely rare type is the 3906A (type A6) the 3907A is also 1879 but normal type, BUT..... ESC states that the A7 was older 4th head, still no nearer lol -
Ok, i know this issue comes up every other month, but i really have to know. CGS grade coins, they are harsh at times, i'm asking, where do they get their grades from? I'm told or have read here on the forum that they have their own yardstick, so do they measure every coin from what they have seen? The reason i ask is this, the Workman sale part 2, lot number 48 described as (Bronze Proof. BMC 1702. F 81. Dies 8+H. Gouby P. Superb As Struck with full original colour. Slabbed by CGS as 90. As such the finest known As you can see above, the words "finest known" so how come still 90, i mean, if they've never seen anything better then their yardstick has been broken, this infuriates me, their grading is surely taking the piss

Go back to the last restore point Rob before the updates were done. If the updates were critical you'll need to find some way around the problem AFTER updates were done, but at least this way you should have the pc running back to where it was before the updates. When you have reverted back, then backup the data you lost initially onto a cd rom or something and then, dare i say it, try the updates again Viel spaß

As a collector I agree with you 100%. I always kept the odd lower grade penny, common dates in my frontline collection and I never did own a lustrous 1899, 1905, 1911 or 1922 penny simply because I liked the strike/toning of the coins I already held or because the process by which I acquired them was memorable in some way. As a dealer it's different and I wouldn't have bought the lower grade coins in a hundred years as they would be very difficult to dispose of. I hope this comes out OK but I love virtually everything about this coin, which to my mind has masses more character than a purely lustrous specimen; If i'm honest, i'm starting to think along the same lines of eye appeal, hence i haven't bought anything for a little while (for me anyway) although my eye appeal must go in hand with some sort of half decent grade. I have seen 1 or 2 coins from 1 or 2 dealers on here that i wish to buy, must get into barter mode

200? new 2p error coin?
azda replied to Marc's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
diplomatic as usual 400 -
This is the point of the restore, if anything is wrong after updating it can rollback to where it was before the updates, so yes it should fix the problem, whether the data retuns as you had it Rob is another question, but in theory, it should. You can also specify what updates you want to use, they don't have to be used, or you can choose which ones you want to install. My advice is firstly do a system restore and see what happens from there

Normally when windows does an update it makes a restore point before it does the updating, my advice would be to go back to the restore before the updates were launched onto the computer you are using. My guess is, as Colin says, MS UPDATES have f****d up yet again

Yes he has got His Cash back, but Let's Look At it this way, the Dealer that Sold him the coin obviously tried to rip him off, If he wasn't, then why give him Hus Cash back plus gets to keep the coin, personally i find it scandalous that the dealer did that, but an object lesson, he knew he was a New collector -
Its better around the Perthshire area, Pitlochry, Tummel Valley (my brother has a static caravan there)Kenmore where i went camping as a kid and remember going for a swim in the River at 6am, it was so calm and great weather we loved it as kids, getting a little commercial now, but still have fond memories of Kenmore and i go back whenever i use my brothers van as it's only about 10-15 miles from Tummel along the wwinding roads. Then there's Blair Atholl, my great uncle worked there and the Duke of Atholl is the only other person in the UK with his own private army other than the Queen

Edward 6th Shilling side profile
azda replied to The Young One's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Spink 2005 lists all issues of side profile shillings in Fine from £125 to £350 unless Bristol (£650). You can add on about 25% - 40% for current values, though someone may have more up-to-date Spink. I have Spink 2011, what Spink number are we looking at? -
hi can anyone help
azda replied to coin fanatic's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It is a £2 scrap coin which I would not entertain....why spend so much on a coin when you clearly have no knowledge....buy the books first. When all's said and done, we've all paid too much for something with hindsight. Better to make a tit of yourself early on and learn from a mistake than find out 5 years down the line after many more such purchases. It isn't possible to over-emphasise the need to research a subject before diving in with both feet. £120 would have bought a handful of books new - double or more that number second-hand. With a bit of luck the seller may even have thrown in a low grade coin worth a couple of quid as a freebie if you indicated you were a novice just beginning to collect and wanted to learn. Most dealers will spend time with someone wanting to learn because it is their future income. Keep your mouth shut and it will be assumed that you know what you are doing, in which case the seller can reasaonably assume that you want to spend an amount of money on a particular coin. Well said Rob, but what can be said for Martin Platts customers, every single one of them are paying over book for his coins, why? Here's one example, he calls UNC, book price 575.......Price paid 705, there's just no logic to it http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230571142036&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp4712.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3D%2B230571142036%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1
