    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I would have said VF+ myself, certainly no AUNC. Does this man ever get embaressed by his overgrading and what does the people that buy from him think when it arrives, clearly his feedback is pushing him along
  3. I think the coin case is just screwed into place so it could possibly be easily removable, maybe take it to a jeweller if you are really wanting it out to check the weight

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

And here's one fom Sid the cleaner, 1926 ME Penny, quoted as UNC.....aye righty oh http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230564236263&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp4712.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3D230564236263%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1
  5. And your reply to this Scott in coin aquisition of the week was "the close 96 is the most common, but still a nice 1896" yet now in CCGB its something else? So a new opinion now because of CCGB? I thought as the subject of date spacing has been brought up I would dig out an old thread from ages ago concerning date spacings on vic bronze pennies and other varieties. Might be of interest to to you and others azda. Date spacings It would probably be better to start a new thread on Viccie Pennies alone, as there seems to be so many of us collecting in that area. Then anyone with date spacing, missing colons and oversstrikes could post them in there so that the other members who dislike the whole idea of a missing colon being a variety etc need not enter if they choose Personally i'm being drawn towards copper overstrikes as a collection type

    RBS card for purchases

Paypal is generally instant if you have funds in the PP account and paying for something, if on the other hand you want to withdraw funds from PP then it takes as much time to get to your accout as a direct debit does
  7. The coin is a jubilee head shilling, made of sterling silver, but if it is gold in colour, then its almost certainly been gold plated at some time. This date doesn't command very much value as many specimens were put away for the queen's golden jubilee. Also gold plating will detract for a true collector. The only caveat I would place on this is other forum members, who know more than I do, may be aware of specimens of this date struck in gold. None of my sources suggest this, but I am always aware that all sorts of strikings and specimens suddenly turn up on here and somebody may know something I don't. If so, I'm sure they will post any information for you. The weight might help indicate
  8. Without seeing any pictures then its impossible to tell
  9. It is closer to the crown Dave, 2nd bust as I stated above! You need to buy a copy of Marsh if you're gonna start to play with sovs. You will find all of the identifiers that Spunk can't be bothered with in there. I have a 1st edition Marsh but didn't see it
  10. Ok 2009 Spink also lists the 1890M as extremely rare Spink number 3867A but also 87 through to 90 3867B is normal 87 through to 90 (repositioned Legend G of D:G closer to crown, how do we know if its closer to the crown? The one i bought looks distant to me, obviously 2 together would help, or a better picture from Spink or something
  11. In fact I'll check the 2009 edition when i get home tonight and see if its listed in there to
  12. Will wait till My New spink book arrives and See what we have
  13. The only downside to this book for me is that the pages are a little thin, would have been better with card like paper for the pictures, but still, a quality book and will give you endless nightmares trying to collect varieties

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I don't know how you can see a rare variety from those 3, i'm still fairly wet behind the ears, but i wouldn't have paid that amount for them. I like an OBV/REV i can see unfortunately, because those cost Geld
  15. Aye the 2010 book lists it and the 1889 M is normal, definately the correct number as i'm looking at it as i type
  16. Thanks for that, I suppose I will now have to order a copy. Just wanted to check that it was worth the £56 (with postage) Definately
  17. I bought it last month, the latest edition, excellent reference for varieties, a good read to. You'll not need anything else for penny reference
  18. Here's my 37 Proof, in 2 posts, hi res pics
  19. Just goes to show, never trust an auctioneer

A salutary lesson for newcomers ..

    184* crowns

Although, better pictures can be had in natural light. I try and take most of my pictures outside, without looking like a coin geek
  22. Unquestionably ebay is the quickest way to offload stock, but this has to be set against the lottery of the price you wil receive. Another drawback with ebay is that the buyer will invariably use Paypal because it is the easiest option for them. However, if things go wrong and they block your account as they did with mine when I tried to get funds out then your working capital is tied up for the 3 months period you have to allow for resolution before you can pass the case to the ombudsman. Paypal don't offer a one to one for sorting problems, requiring you to communicate by email. Any means of avoiding Paypal is therefore preferable. Yes, a week or weeks can go by without a sale. This is why it is really only feasible to do it as a full time job if you have a guaranteed supply of and customers for large value items. The return on low grade mixed material is greater if you melt it, and much easier to realise. Ebay has a monopoly on crap. Red has covered the insurance question. Just about everyone has a PO Box for the reasons outlined, but that still doesn't stop people being mugged. There have been at least 4 instances of attacks on dealers where stock has been lost in the last two or three years. You have to keep your wits about you. Maintaining a website requires an undue amount of time if you want to photograph as much material as possible. People will always buy what they can see rather than what they can't, that's human nature. I think the trend will be that only high value items will end up on websites. Ebay has such a prolific supply of low grade/value items that frankly, it is not easy to compete and it always offer the chance of picking up a bargain. Conversely you would be an idiot to list high value items on ebay without a reserve, at which point costs become a major issue and so a website offers continuous listing until such time as an item is sold - which can quite literally be years. You can get a lot of traffic onto a website, but how many are different people is open to question and whether they buy anything is in the lap of the gods. I've had about 17000 visits in the first 4 years that the site has been up and running, but that could just as easily be 170 visits from 100 individuals as 17 visits from 1000 people. Most sites don't have a visitor counter, so I can't offer a comparison. You can have as much or as little family time as you decide. Any business at the beginning requires long hours until established. Always assume you will have to pay import vat on coins bought abroad. You can only have a profitable business if you can determine your costs in advance of actually purchasing an item. If the sums don't add up, don't buy. It's always much easier to buy than to sell. My business was already VAT registered before I diversified into coins, so I simply incorporated it into an existing structure, but if you don't have to be registered then I wouldn't bother. Would I want to do it as my sole means of income? No. If you say you want to earn a UK average salary which is in the region of £25K at the moment and you make a 10% return after overheads, you obviously have to sell £250Ks worth to provide the income. You will make more margin sometimes, less on others, but the overheads will always be there. That's a lot of well heeled customers that you have to sell to annually and on a recurring basis. Do I enjoy it? Yes, but it helps to have a laid back disposition. It's probably worth pointing out that plenty of people have a hassle-free experience with PayPal - I have so far (touch wood). I appreciate that doesn't make Rob feel any happier about them, but it might be worth canvassing a wider opinion? Then make your decision. Paypal will always have its problems because Ebay owns paypal. I've only had 1 problem where a buyer said he never received a coin i sent, they stopped all transactions until it was sorted. The only way to go around any negativity with PP is to send funds direct to your bank account when they come in.
