I'd agree with Pete' comment above about the background. Try out several different backgrounds plus different Lighting. I went from a pöain black background to plain white. The white is best for silver IMO but haven't bought any copper recently to try out on the white background.
  3. I'm not sure if a dipped proof would retain its proof fields, i've never tried obviously, but dipping even a currency coin for longer than 10 seconds and it looses all its life and looks like stone. Martin P from ebay does this quite often and those he's overdipped are very obvious, proofs in my opinion might lose its brilliant fields somewhat. Anyone want to experiment? Rocking horse proofs normally sell around the £450-£500+ region

    1847 Gothic Crown

I agree with Stewies sentiments exactly, poor grammar and sentence structure
  5. I only put the amount in as a basis, i don't know if I'll bid on anything or not. Probably am reading to much into it, but after seeing the grade hike on this coin and the grade they offered on my James I plume shilling, it's now really stuck in my throat at their double standards
  6. Possibly, or my other thought was that they are perhaps being elitest and perhaps only want big guns bidding. I only put £1500 in there, so we'll see if I get approval or not
  7. I've bought previously from Baldwins through the saleroom, so you'd think I'd be already on file, but you can't proceed without entering a specified amount.
  8. That's a standard reply from the saleroom when you sign up.Really? I signed up to the St James auction yesterday and was approved straight away. They also Never asked how much i was likely to spend.
  9. I just signed up on the saleroom for the Baldwins auction should anything be of interest and when signing up they are now asking for your projected spend, email arrived with "approval pending" I wonder now If my projected spend is'nt enough for elitest Baldwins and they refuse me. Let's wait and see.
  10. Agreed, but you might need 2 tons of coins to make a bucket up
  11. It would be interesting to challange Baldwins on their grade given the fact it was noted differently in another sale and ask shy such a huge leap
  12. My VF Alexander III Penny. What would your opinion be Kai?
  13. 2 things spring to mind regarding the grade 1. The consigor could have stipulated himself the grade to be added for the auction if he is a dealer and/or known to the Baldwins crew. 2. It could be that Baldwins themselves are overgrading only because its a rare coin and are trying to push the price. When the eventual buyer comes to one day sell it on he'll then quote the Baldwins grade and so it will go round and around. I have an Alexander III Scottish Penny, it came from a hoard found in 1974, sold at Glendinnings in 1977 in VF grade, then again in Spink in 2013 with the same garde, after posting it on the forum most agreed it was GVF.

If you want to use a white background then use a whiite A4 piece of paper instead of the glove

    Your buying criteria

In order 5 3 6 4 1 Number 4 can mean 2 things, rare as in not many struck etc, or an exceptional high grade for a hammered coin.
