I must confess I've not seen an (English civil war counter stamped?) coin, nor an Australian Holey dollar, but we're surely talking about 2 different countries. As I said previously, in Blighty, both coin and counterstamp are graded and i won't digress further from this thread. If you can elaborate further on the civil war counterstamp coinage, are we talking British civil war? Then please PM me further details. -
P.s, if i offended anyone else with my comment then my apologies, i have an opinion i'm afraid and rather not mince my words to much, being blunt and straight to the point is who i am.
-
Not sure whymy comment would offend you Nick, its inly my view that this Tory Government has nithing in common with the common working man and has only Got London and his millionaire friends at his heart, after all, Cameron is related to the queen. Remember all the flak itook about thr Indy vite last year? I stiod alone amoungst all the hammer blows, so please grow a pair, its my view and if you don't agree then feel free to PM me your own views against my post amd we can debate it, i have no problem with that or you or anyone else onthis forum regardless of religion, race or anything else. Oh and just for the record, shooting cameron was of course metaphorically speaking, but of course some of the MPs in there should be brought to justice for what is obviously being covered up, anyone that thinks otherwise just have their heads buried in the sand.

Where does it say it was graded on the coin and not the counterstamp? I believe UK auction houses give 2 grades for similar coins, but i can't see anything on the label that suggest its the coin that was graded. Just saying. Nicholas, i woiuld'nt have taken that out ofits holder considering where its come from. Of course a majority dislike holders but thats good provenance there. -

I emailed him About the grading terminology, his reply, notice he's still using EF instead of the Label XF Hello, The PCGS EF40 is approximately About Extremely Fine In terms of the English grading system, This Coin Is by no standards equal to a coin graded at good fine. If we take the standard scientific numismatic approach to grading coins, the Grade of Extremely fine is attributed to a coin that displays 90% or more of it original design-usually most obvious at the high points of the coins devices and legends, with a simple cursory glance at the coin in question and then on further detailed analysis (when in hand) I'm entirely satisfied that this coin displays at least 85% of its original raised design quite probably more. The PCGS is far more accurate than many British collectors give them credit for. The CGS seem a little sure of themselves considering there position in the market. As all good numismatists know, its a question of 'buy the coin not the slab'

If we're talking toning -
I see the coin as NVF personally, PCGS has it slabbed as XF and so He uses the British grade to increase the price 6 fold,

Notice how this seller intigrates the American XF grade for a British EF grade. XF 40 equates to a CGS Good Fine making this coin About £780 overpriced 221491637784

Rare as a 1905 Halfcrown?
azda replied to Nicholas's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
This One is also in the same sale estimated at £800-£1500 amd was listed on an American dealers website last year at $2250 initially and went down to $1850 after no bites. The scratch on the OBVS cheek is a little detracting, i'd say it was no more than a £500 coin, so looks like the dealer is looking for more than money back on this. It will be interesting to see where it starts and falls at, i'm hoping no one bites at £800, to me its never a £1000 coin -
This arsehole should be shot at dawn along with IDS. Claiming to have lowered unemployment while dishing out severe cuts to the already impoverished unemployed while giving their Champagne quaffing friends heads up and first dibs on various contracts stinks to high heaven. Hiding the Phedos that languish within Westminster is also another point. The whole establishment stinks and needs a radical clear out because the Tories are in it for themselves and their buddies, Cameron and his cronies don't have a clue about the common man on the street and certainly don't give a shit about them either. One day the shit will hit the fan that Westminster and those who sit there are bottom feeders who should be brought to justice for their cover ups and tipping the wink to their chums on up coming sales of the NHS and the PO for example. The place is rotten to the core, then there's the House of Lords whose members don't pay tax and are unelected, WHY should they be exempt? An absolute joke

Always complaining about the Scots but never want us to leave the union. Come The GE when we have a full quota of 50 odd Scots MPs then we'll see whats about to happen. Watch this space Scotland already has 59 MPs. Only the 6 SNP ones are really odd. No, thats the 53 labour MPs who will be redundant after the GE

1854 Penny - Ignorant Question

Not to take over the OP, but advice required in this coin, grade and overall general thoughts. On reflection i should have put this in the "more pennies" thread if anyone can move it -

In answer to The question i'd say because it's relatively cheap and an Icon of Victoria coinage. Perhaps The buyer is another Scott and does'nt have The 4 figures required to ever scratch a large itch. It is ugly though
