Gollum, That reminds me of a song!..."Oh the girls all get prettier at closing time!"
-
I think there are only two (2) 1827 Uncirculated Pennies known. One was sold 3 or 4 years ago by Colin Cooke, and it brought an astronomical price for the time! I can see why the price has been raised...it is a really RARE coin in better grades!

Could this be a US 1944 D over S penny?
RLC35 replied to Englishpicker's topic in Enquiries about Non British coins
Gollum, Here is a "new" QX3 Digital Blue Microscope for $49.95. It is basically the same as the QX5. http://www.ebay.com/itm/QX3-Computer-Microscope-Digital-Blue-New-/260900460896?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cbee11960#ht_500wt_1180 -
Could this be a US 1944 D over S penny?

Wow...prices have gone up! I bought mine brand new for $49.95. It's probably worth the price you have quoted though. -
Could this be a US 1944 D over S penny?
RLC35 replied to Englishpicker's topic in Enquiries about Non British coins
Gollum, One of the best, low cost scopes, is the Digital Blue QX5. It has magnification of 10x, 60x, and 200x. They were originally made for, and sold at, "toys R Us!" You can find them on eBay for about $50.00. There are two models, the QX3 and the QX5. The 5 is the best, but both work in the same fashion. They have a PC interface, and work with most software systems. I have used mine with Windows Vista, and Windows 7, as well as older versions of windows. I also have the Leuchtturn Microscope, but the QX5 provides a better image than the Leuchtturn. -
Dave, It seems like I've seen you post somewhere before...could it be Facebook? <ggggg>.

Could this be a US 1944 D over S penny?

Englishpicker, Clean off the date (lightly handwash with soap & water), then look at the mintmark with a 20x or 30x loupe (a 60x scope would even be better), you will then be able to quickly determine if it is a D over S variety. It appears to be the real thing, at first glance. Nice find! -
I didn't get any coins for Christmas, but I have talked my wife into going to Florida the first week in January for vacation! I don't think she is aware of the fact that the "Fun" Convention (Florida United Numismatists) is that week! There will be 650 Dealers, and over 1000 Bourse tables...should be a blast!

Calvin, Is the attached pic like your farthing? This is a 1826 that I have. -
David, It looks ok at a distance, but the Flyer should have added the 20x magnification he said he used, for all to see.

1897 O'NE Penny

Freeman-147, and Gouby BP1897B are both numbers for the 1897 1d with "dot". -
Debbie, As Peter has mentioned, PCGS and NGC are the two USA grading companies... you can rely on for better grading. ANAC's is ok, but not up to PCGS and NGC standards. The balance of the companies are not as reliable. My personal opinion!

Dave, I'm not as picky as Accumulator...I'll take it! I think you are pretty well on the mark with the grading. -
£1.4M for a comic......I must be collecting the wrong things!

Sotheby's, beware! Offering everything from rare books to Lou Gehrig's jersey, Heritage Auctions under CEO Steve Ivy grows to become the third-largest auction house in the world. For years the nation's top currency and coin house, Dallas-based Heritage Auctions has used its founders' entrepreneurial prowess to diversify and flourish in recent yearspartly at the expense of industry giants Sotheby's and Christie's. When actor Nicolas Cage decided to unload most of his vast comic book collection in 2002, he used Heritage Auctions in Dallas to execute the $1.68 million sale. In Orlando last year, a 1913 U.S. Liberty head nickel previously owned by Egypt's King Farouk and before that, Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss (who sold it years earlier for a paltry $200,000), was sold at a Heritage auction for $3.7 million to an East Coast collector. Per above note from Heritage Auctions in Dallas, TX.....They auctioned off the comic collection for Nicholas Cage. -
Customs Import Duty on Coins?
RLC35 replied to Coinery's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
In sending coins to Great Britain, from The USA, I have only had one recipient mention having to pay a "Fee" at the Post Office for a coin he received. It usually takes 6-9 days for shipments to arrive in GB from the USA...this particular shipment took 3 weeks. I feel like the longer shipment time might have been the package was randomly opened for inspection, as someone earlier mentioned. I always list my coin shipments as tokens, and mark them as gifts. I always put the actual value of the shipment, however. -
Thanks Peter. It is always sad to hear about a life being taken, especially when they are so talented, and well liked. It is hard to understand, I am sure.

Krause 20th Century Catalogue Updates
RLC35 replied to VickySilver's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Problem might be that not many use it. I use an old edition for world coin type reference rather than an up to date copy. Is there an online edition anywhere to see what is in the current volume? I know it probably goes against the grain, but a note after certain sections referring the reader to more comprehensive lists might be the easy option, just as Spink do for Elizabeth I for example. I know that doesn't give prices for the individual varieties, but there again neither does any other tome give anything other than a selection. Price are always going to be volatile in the case of patterns. Do you take auction prices or those after dealer markups? Baldwins prices in their recent lists are close to 50% up on the saleroom for the pieces they bought, though some are more reasonable. It's a bit of a conundrum. As for Krause's numbering, it has always seemed a bit haphazard. Coincraft's numbering, while a bit more cumbersome, was at least logical whereby they used the monarch and denomination as the basis for their code. Rob, The current NGC website has a on-line pricing guide, that includes world coins. The pricing is current Krause pricing, and is provided to NGC by Krause. It is a free price guide. -
Best UK Auction to Sell High-Grade Coins? Slabbed or Not?
RLC35 replied to Coinery's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Vicky, You mentioned Spink Auctions. What commission charge did they end up charging you? I have never approached them, so I don't have feel for their pricing. I have talked to Baldwins. They say they will grade, photograph and sell the item for 17%, which includes VAT. -
Hi Mark, Nice coin! I have sent you a PM regarding it.
