IDENTIFYING AN ENTIRE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR HOARD ...
PunkReaper replied to mhcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Is the hoard definitely being sold as one or is there a chance of it being broken up? -
Came across this on a Napoleonic Wars forum. Thought it may be of interest here... FAO: ALL FORUM MEMBERS WHO COLLECT MILITARIA I know many of you post images of valuable items in your personal collections such as medals, swords and other Napoleonic militaria in showcases and other threads. Please, therefore, take note of the following... An issue has come to my attention through a forum connected to Rolex watches. It appears a member on said forum posted photos of his Rolex collection which had been taken using the camera on his iPhone. Sadly his collection was then later stolen. It has been suggested (by a US police officer to myself) that thieves may have used the photos to ascertain the home of the member. It appears (and I have checked this out myself with shocking results!) that by default iPhones and some Smartphones embed the GPS location of where the photo was taken in the picture file. By saving the file to your computer you can look at the properties of the file (right click and properties) to obtain the GPS coordinates then use Google Maps to pinpoint the location where the photo was taken. When you upload your images online this GPS information remains with the image. Apparently thieves are now known to be abusing this system. While I would hope that this is highly unlikely to happen to members of the NWF I felt it wise to post this thread just as a warning. If you do use your iPhone or Smartphone camera to take photos of your valuable collectors items please ensure you turn the GPS tracking information off first - or better still use a digital camera! I haven't had much success photographing my coins with my ordinary camera. I probably could do with a macro lens and a ring flash. However I saw this Linder Magnicam for sale I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this product?

How much do you spend on coins
PunkReaper posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Here is a question I am nosey enough to want to know. I know that one mans £1000 is another mans 10p so what the question is: What percentage of your monthly income have or would you spend on a coin? -

Yes, I remember the Scarisbrick in the early 1960's - is it still the same? Yes it's still there. Not sure whether it has changed much since being a local I don't go there much but I'll be walking past it today. I love Southport for its seaside feel. Much nicer shopping there than in Liverpool, but obviously Liverpool has more shops, and the new Liverpool One is great. Just need a coin dealer in Southport for me to browse in. is david regans shop still open? i used to get some really good coins from him a couple of years ago...... Went to see David Regan today and spent quite a while chatting with him. He's a lovely guy, very friendly and welcoming. He had some nice coins and antiquities. I can see I'll be a regular visitor there. -

A beautiful coin but i'm baffled as to how well preserved it is after being underground so long. Did anyone read about the WWI trench the french dug up last week while excavating A new road. Bodies, timbers, weappns preserved, realy interesting to read about it and see the pictures. Sounds interesting, got a link? Saw a field of metal detectorists today in a field by our house. Was tempted to stop the car and see what they had found, but the field was a bit muddy.... -
The next personal and slightly intrusive question is who do you buy your coins from. As a relative beginner I am always nervous of making a mistake so I avoid eBay where knowledge is power. I have bought most of my coins from reputable dealers except for the low grade bargain buys. It would be helpful if you could list a few dealers that your happy to recommend and perhaps some eBay accounts that you've had good dealings with. In the past my main dealer of choice who has always been very helpful to me was KB Coins.

Are you a Man (or Woman) with a Plan
PunkReaper posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Ok the last thread was prematurely completed by Katie my miniature Schnauzer. Didn't want me on the computer when its time for her walk. So as I was saying, when I started collecting I was a Man with a Plan. I got the Spinks catalogue and started collecting back trying to get one of each catalogue number excluding gold. I did this until the coins were becoming harder to find and more expensive, then I lost my focus and bought a few hammered and Roman coins, and then lost it a bit more and bought a few pretty shiny things. So now I'm deciding what i want to do next. Although many just collect what they feel like my personality is more geared to collecting sets. I know a bit OCD. I have seen some lovely collections of Pennies and farthings etc... I was wondering, generally speaking whether you are more prone to collect with a Plan in mind or whether you just "go with the flow"? -

Are you a Man (or Woman) with a Plan

I might be interested in any nice shillings when you do! My 'plan' was to collect all major obv/ rev design changes of shillings starting witht the first issues for each reign. But trying to find a cheap VF testoon, some of the nicer James II or W&M examples, plus a Dorien Magens made me realise my pockets weren't deep enough for a comprehensive collection. Gradually I lost interest in modern coins (post 1750 for me) and switched entirely to Tower mint issues of Charles I. I'm considering adding Scottish Chas coins at present. There aren't very many varieties and it makes a change but it all depends on budget really. So now it's sadly, less a man with a plan as man within a budget! And occasionally a whim too. Oh, and I've deleted your duplicate thread as requested PR Thanks for deleting the duplicate thread, I'll let the dog out of the corner now. I suppose most themed collections run up against the money barrier one way or another. There are so many lovely coins and a limited budget. I have always felt a bit depressed reading Coin News and seeing beautiful coins way above my financial limit but then again I haven't got the Ferrari yet either. -

I'm hoping there maybe one to examine at the Prinz publications table at the London fair on Saturday. If any good then Chris's price seems more attractive! I see they are readily available on the bay for about £180. What I haven't see is the nice cradle that appears on Chris's link, don't know if that included. I'm hoping this might be an easy and more improved way of gaining a good close up coin image. At the moment I still hold a coin under a good light and use my camera which takes a good close up but then I'm left with all the surroundings to crop, too time consuming plus I have a crap scanner, so this might be the answer though a tad expensive! ditto -

I had access to my parents "CARD" tin and got reasonable quality date runs. I also fondly remember trips to the coastal arcades and always came home with a handful of Vickies. I'd forgotten about the arcades. At the end of Southport pier there is an arcade which has old machines. If you pay they give you some old coins to use on the machine. Maybe fun to have a look at the coins instead. -

Very true, When the children were younger we had great fun collecting the best coin they could find in our change and collecting sets of coins etc. Sadly they could only find coins in the decimal age but when I was young we would have fun finding Victorian coins in our change. -

I've pottered around collecting a variety of coins mostly British with. A few ancients as well. Reading this forum I feel the time has come to increase my knowledge by some serious reading and perhaps focus my collecting more.
