Thanks for that RLC35. It weighs around 25 grams on our postal scale. Looks old enough to have been around for quite a while. Doesn't seem much point in today's market when they're only worth about a hundred bucks. Probably more point when they were in circulation. A curiosity. I might keep it. Thanks again. Kris

I've noticed a distinct rise in the prices achieved at auction for stamps and associated items recently. A couple of years ago you couldn't give first day covers away but now there seems to be some competition. Older stamp collections are improving all the time. Maybe it's just people hoping for the treasure at the bottom of the box. Don't we all. Only our local auction house but it has a wide catchment area and appears on t'internet. The same seems to apply to odd boxes of English commemorative crowns. Usually can't give them away. Probably down to inexperienced bidders or a false impression of values.

I've never thought of myself as a coin collector but I realise that I've actually collected coins all my life. Saved the odd interesting coin out of my change while in the Merchant Navy and bought a few odd boxes at auction that took my fancy. Not really a collection but a box of coins that lives among all the other collections. Needs sorting and it's future deciding which is why I joined the forum. I suppose the attraction is in nice looking coins in good condition. A lot of times there's a story to be told when buying odd lots at auction. I have a small bag of wartime dated coins from various places along with some buttons and enjoy imagining how they came to be together. Just a bit of a romantic.

Hi All, Not really into coin collecting but seem to have acquired a collection over the years. (A few years in the Merchant Navy helped) I decided to try and find out if any of the shrapnel/silver coloured washers I have are of any value at all but find it extremely frustrating trying to find genuine information. I have some Freie Stadt Danzig Gulden from just pre-war but can't get a reasonable idea of either the quality or the value. There seems to have been a bit of a blip in the prices paid at auction last year with some daft values acheived. The first is the only 5 Pfennig coin among them. I would appreciate any help with grades and values. I'll attach more in later posts.

Thanks for that, RLC35. It's easy to get confused if you're not numismatically inclined. Prices achieved for 5 Gulden on Heritage for NGC graded coins $805 13th January 2009 (AU50) $2185 5th January 2008 (MS63) $5462 5th January 2008 (MS65) I suppose the NGC grading and encapsulation makes a lot of difference. This is the last of the Gulden and is the 1935 10 Gulden nickel. It appears to have some "bloom" left on it so not greatly circulated. There's a bit of green corrosion on the edge between the "u" & "l" of Gulden. I've checked this against some of those for sale or sold on ebay etc., and it appears to be genuine. The fakes have great problems in the area of the tower and the star with the beasts heads on the reverse being badly formed. The prices of these over the last 5 years have been rather silly ranging from a couple of hundred Euros to about 5K. Again probably depends on who was at the auction and where it was held. Most of the figures come from US auctions. They are for sale in Europe at varying prices around 2K. Any help most appreciated.

Next is the 5 Gulden nickel from 1935. I just can't seem to find a serious price for this one. It doesn't seem to have been circulated much and I've seen prices achieved that don't seem to reflect grade but more who was at the auction at the time.

Thanks very much for the quick reply, azda. Would these appear to be VF? Next are the nickel coins and attached is the 1 Gulden of 1932. I have 4 of these and all are about the same grade except the last which has a ding about 1mm deep. They don't appear at auction all that often but the price seems to be relatively constant.

The next is 10 pfennigs. There are 8 of these in varying states. There appears to be some darkening to several of them as if they've been exposed to smoke. They came in a general coin lot at auction so I have no provenance.

Thanks for the welcome, Peckris. Some modern UK & foreign both current and defunct but mostly pre-1945 and a rather weird mix. I'm still busy deciding what is worth mentioning or asking about.
