Have I identified it right? 1874 Halfpenny
Bernie replied to bhx7's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Looks like a 12+J to me, could be wrong, halfpennies are so difficult to identify. Especially obverse 11/12. Also this coin may have started life as an 1874H with the H flattened. -
Malcolm Peake, Collected bronze Pennies. He was a leading authority on bronze pennies, halfpennies and farthings. He started collecting in the 1960's, one of the first to recognise differences in so many die varieties. Malcolm combined his knowledge with Michael Freeman and Michael Gouby and made contributions to their reference catalogues. The last time that I spoke with Malcolm, he gave me the impression that he planned to live in Thailand. My good friend, he shared all of his knowledge of bronze pennies with me !

1862 Half Penny C Die Letter
Bernie replied to Nojo84's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
My money is on an "A", The sub variety die with "A" nearer linear circle. Just an opinion, could be wrong ! -
I believe Hydrofluoric acid can be extremely dangerous if contacted with your skin !

I think that somebody is going to be disappointed here ! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1863-VICTORIA-BUNHEAD-PENNY-WITH-SMALL-3-UNDER-DATE-/131654041598?hash=item1ea7313ffe:g:H-wAAOSwZVhWSjPW

A batch of 1954 pennies were struck to test the dies. The mint decided not to issue these or strike anymore as there were plenty of pennies in circulation. As you are probably aware there were no British pennies struck until 1961. The mint ordered all pennies dated 1954 to be melted. It is believed that just one penny escaped melting and surfaced years later. It is not known whether the coin was stolen or just found its way into circulation with a batch of pennies after 1961. The coin has changed hands quite a few times and is in a private collection. The coin pictured on the "Tony Clayton" site is of the genuine coin. About ten years ago a 1954 penny was advertised on Ebay. This coin was clearly a fake, as it had the obverse of 1953 pennies. At that time I advised the seller that it was most likely that the coin was a fake and asked her what she would do if it sold for £50,000 ! and the problems that could follow if the buyer contested its authenticity, the Ebay fee's, the Paypal charges etc. The lady selling the coin immediately removed the listing and the coin disappeared off the radar. I am attaching the pictures of the coin auctioned on Ebay, not very good pictures that were copied at the time.

I've seen a few copper proofs over the years, but don't recall whether they were overdates or not.

Not sure about proof 1860's ? Were they 60/59's ???

New undiscovered 1860 obverse die
Bernie replied to terrysoldpennies's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
F19 - as far as I know there is only one (disputed) specimen - others may know better !!!!! I hope that there is no dispute regarding the one Freeman 19. Unfortunately not good enough grade to count the border teeth. Brilliant, Terry, for your new discovery !! -
Anyone plan on bidding?
Bernie replied to Coppers's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I was going to, but it says that it has been lightly rubbed..... I wish!!!! -
Amazing ! how did I miss this. I check Ebay meticulously every day and somehow did not see it. It appears that it wasn't even hidden in an obscure category. I've got a feeling my search method must not be including every possibility of finding the coins that I watch for. The selling price would indicate that it was a buy it now coin, which probably sold soon after entry. Well done to the collector who secured this coin. As far as I am aware it is the finest known.

Take a look at these copies of coins on Ebay. You don't want to buy one of these as genuine coins ! http://stores.ebay.co.uk/PORTLAND-MINT?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

The Enigmatic Andy Scott, Or, Who Is This Masked Penny Collector?
Bernie replied to VickySilver's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Andy Scott is the collectors real name. Why would you think that it isn't ? -
I can think of many adjectives that would be more representative for your collection of pennies. Nice ?? Rash, that is modesty to excess !!!!!!

Listings on Ebay with the same images!
Bernie replied to bhx7's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I've had a similar problem a few years ago, where a bun penny was displayed with a earlier obverse that didn't match with a date. I contacted the seller asking him if he could check that both pictures displayed were of the same coin. He contacted me back and assured me that they were. It was therefore possible that this was a new die combination. Bids started to appear on this penny and I didn't want to miss it if it was something special. Knowing that other collectors had noticed the coin I decided to contact him again. I explained that I still believed that he had posted the wrong pictures and if I were to bid and won, and the coin turned out to be different to the coin pictured, I would want my money refunded in full. After this he removed the sale from Ebay and contacted me back explaining that he had in fact posted the wrong picture of the obverse. He obviously couldn't be bothered to check the first time, probably one of those people that wouldn't believe that he could make a mistake. (I hope that I have made no spelling mistakes or grammatical errors ) -
