Md Find 1860 Penny, Help Needed To Id Obverse.
just.me replied to MACKSILKY.'s topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It looks like the signature is 'on' the bust and the : after G of D:G: is to a border tooth (difficult to tell), which would make it Freeman obverse 2 or Gouby obverse D -

Been collecting and selling for 50 years, wouldn't imaging too much selling at that price. Maybe it is double/treble struck http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-1884-Queen-Victoria-Hair-In-Bun-EF-Toothed-Beads-Bronze-Farthing-/271345551855?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item3f2d7489ef

On the subject of 1953 Crown varieties, I have a 1+A proof with inverted die axis (about 170 degrees) I assume this was an error and not intentional.

London Coins Today
just.me replied to Accumulator's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Nice to hear someone saying 30's is young, I'm 34 and my 10 year old daughter is always asking me about what things were like when I was 'young' She has a small accumulation of coins (mostly taken from my bulk lots) she has found curious, holed, scalloped edge, square, triangle etc, and she also collected the olympic 50 pences and the WWF 50p. Her latest 2 were the poppy £5 coin and also a silver coin from Cook Islands I think? which had the clear capsule in the middle with the jewels, whether this will stem into collecting when she is older, only time will tell. -

1818 Lix Tvtamen Error Crown ,highest Graded Example...
just.me replied to Bibbobmcguyver's topic in Beginners area
Hi, Hi, it might depend when the variety was found, Davies was published in 1982, Rayner 1992 and Coincraft 2000. The mentioned reference books list unique patterns, off metal strikes as well as standard issues and varieties etc, so its not not in them because it is that rare. Its maybe because it is only a filled bar to the A or an inverted V? There are so many of these small error varieties in all denominations that don't get catalogued in the main catalogues. Its still a very nice condition, scarce error, but nothing like as sought after as a LVIII error edge. I would think it would command a small premium above the standard coin.. A quick search on Google and there are several that have been sold in the past half dozen years that were listed with the variety, this will give you a price comparison to a standard version. London Coins sale 116, 03/03/07 lot 779, cleaned GVF £120 DNW 18/06/09 lot 413 £230 DNW 24/09/08 lot 3224 £170 toned EF Rendal Ingram has one on his site GEF plugged pinholes on edge £275 Kleeford Coin Auctions 20/09/13 lot 143 £95 Buckscoins also had one a while back Do Spink not list prices? or give a rarity level? I don't have a Spink catalogue to check. Are you by any chance Bob.Phillips? http://www.predecimal.com/forum/user/501-bobphillips/?tab=topics this variety was asked about a good while back on the forum and then re-visited again here http://www.predecimal.com/forum/topic/6254-coin-varieties/#entry57578 -

just.me replied to Bibbobmcguyver's topic in Beginners area
Hi, which error are you meaning? The unbarred A in Tutamen? The error edge listed in the catalogues on the 1818 Crown is on the LVIII edge and has the wording in the wrong order. D.A.R.E.T.L.as opposed to D.E.T.A.R.L. Rayner, Davies nor Coincraft mention an error on the edge of the 1818 LIX Are you the seller of the coin here? http://www.adverts.ie/coins-notes/investment-coin-extremely-rare-1818-tutamen-error-crown-sterling-silver-coin-in-near-mint-state/2671714 -
Victorian Shillings - Die Numbers 1864-79
just.me replied to lordshill1867's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi, I have collected die numbers for a number of years now, 6d 1/- and 2/-. I currently have 878 of the possible 1107 die numbers for Shillings (excluding varieties and errors). I know a collector that had just over 1000 of the 1107, so there are less than 100 unknown numbers. I have found very little info on the die number series apart from the books already listed in the above posts, Davies, ESC, Coincraft etc. Tony Claytons site with known die numbers is not very up to date. I e-mailed him a while back with the numbers I had, but he never updated it. There are a couple of errors/updates on Davies, 1868 I believe 51 is the highest number, not 54. 1874 I believe 70 is the highest number not 76. 1877 I have with die 70, Davies lists 69 as highest. As far as varieties go, if you collect all the numbers, you will generally have all the varieties, since this is all the dies that were used. There are only a hand full of exceptions, the main ones worth noting are The 1866 die 63 has the standard obverse and also found with the B/R in BRIT obverse. 1879 die 9 has the standard obverse and also found with the R/B in GRATIA (there was one for sale on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1879-Victoria-Shilling-Unlisted-GBATIA-Error-Variety-die-9-EXTREMELY-RARE-/200974960748?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item2ecb0a886c ) London coins also sold one a while back. There will be plenty errors in the series too, broken dies, filled dies etc, but not really varieties. Hope this helps -

Here is my latest £1 coin forgery, a mule with the new shield reverse, muled with a 1998 Jersey obverse

I read somewhere that the bronzes were predated. I'm sure the blue wallets were issued in 1968 for people to familiarise themselves with the new coinage. I have not seen or heard of any coppers dated 1968 69 or 1970, have you got an obverse picture of them?. The red case was just a fancier case rather than the standard blue wallets. You also got a red case for the 1st and last coinages made by the same company (see the small logo on bottom left)

Yes, the Two Pences also have different dies used on the currency, BU sets and Proofs. From 1986 through to 1997 there are various obverse dies, L of Elizabeth to either left or right of bead, mostly the circulation pieces has the L of ELIZ to left of bead and the BU sets and proofs have the L to right of bead, there are a few I have found which go against the grain, 1987 proof L is to left of bead. Up until 1988 the F of F:D: was to bead but in 1989 it is to space on both BU sets and Proof. It then changes again after that 2004 to 2008 BU sets have the T in TWO to space and the circulation issues have the T to a bead. The same goes for the 5 Pences, 1988 1989 and 1990 all have different pointings Small 5 Pences, I have obverse 1 as having I in ELIZ to left of bead and obverse 2 as having the I in ELIZ to space. I have reverse A as having I of FIVE to left of bead and reverse 2 as having I of FIVE to right of bead so far I have found 1990 and 1991 circul 2+B BU set 1+A 1992 circul 1+B BU set 1+A 1993 BU set and Proof 1+A 1994 > 1997 circul 2+B BU set 1+A 1998 to 2008 having the new obverse, all seemed consistent with the obverse dies, the reverses still differed, circulation having rev B and BU sets having rev A 10 Pences after 1982 seemed consistent as they were all BU set issues up until 1992 small version. The 1992 versions are listed in Chris's check your change book. From 1993 to 1998 the circulation issues have the 1 in 10 pointing to a bead (reverse A). The BU sets, the 1 points to a space (reverse B ). 1998 sees a new obverse die and there are now 2 used again, obv 1 L of ELIZ to space and obverse 2, L of ELIZ to bead. Again there are still 2 reverses used. I have found so far 1998 and 1999 BU set with 1+B 2000 > 2007 I found circulation as having 2+A and BU sets having 2+B 2008 both circulation and BU sets had 2+B I liked the old designs a lot better than the shield types, but at least the shield types will have far less varieties and pointing differences having no teeth or beads

Can Someone Help Me Identify This Coin Please?
just.me replied to becksflorin's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Yes - that's a better picture. I'd say it was GF from that obverse, but interestingly there's no cross stroke on the 'f' of 'f.d.' - I don't know if it's a variety or just wear? If just wear then it's worth around £25, possibly a shade more. Its die number 1, my die 1 also has a weak cross to the F, and you'll notice the doubled D in DG too -
1986 is the earliest I have found type 2 portcullis with incuse rivets. There are quite a few varieties in the reverses and obverses over the years if you compare the circulation issues, the BU set issues and the proof issues. Even though the pictures above show type 1 portcullis as having 110 beads and type 2 having 113 beads, it is not always the case, you can get the type 2 portcullis with the 110 bead reverse too. Here are the Portcullis types I have in my collection (1971 to 1981 I collected circulation and proof, 1982 and 1983 I collected BU set and proof issues and 1984 >2008 I collected circulation and BU set issues) 1971 to 1985 circulation, BU sets and Proof have type 1 1986 circulation has type 1, BU set issue has type 2 1987 circulation and BU set has type 1 1988, 1989 and 1990 circulation has type 1, BU set has type 2 1991 both circulation and BU set are type 1 1992 circulation has type 2 and BU set has type 1 1993 circulation has type 1 and BU set has type 2 1994 both circulation and BU set have types 2 1995 to 2006 circulation and BU set have type 2 2007 and 2008 circulation has type 1, BU set has type 2

Victorian Penny Wanted
just.me replied to alma's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
F18 and F22 both have LCW on reverse D It might be better to post a picture of the Penny that you are looking to upgrade, the variety can make quite a difference to the price. There are four to choose from F19 2+F as far as I know there is only 1 known specimen F20 2+G quite scarce, especially in high grades F24 4+F only a handful known, there are 2 varietes of this pairing also F25 4+G scarce, more so in higher grades. here is one for sale http://www.argentumandcoins.co.uk/1861-penny-gf-f-25-2390-p.asp -
Anyone Come Across...
just.me replied to tracyaw's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think you will find that the 9 has been recut not double struck. I agree they are re-cut 9's but the variety is commonly known as the 'double struck 9' Tracy, have a look on Michael Gouby's website, he has a few types pictured there http://www.michael-coins.co.uk/BP%201945%20varieties.htm -

Here is the doubled 9. There are several different doubled 9s, varying from slightly doubled to very obvious, there is also a treble struck 9. -
Good Fine Mule £1,250 Any Takers?
just.me replied to copper123's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Slightly different but, here is a good example of a worn 1853 Crown that Michael Gouby has on his website, twice as rare as the 1934 and were all the 1853s only issued in the Proof sets? http://www.michael-coins.co.uk/cr1853.htm -
1861 Half Penny, With Doubled 1
just.me replied to RLC35's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
F279 is 7+F, F282 is 7+G. Your reverse I'm certain is a reverse G, the same as mine. reverse F has a lot of unique features inc. the styles of hair, lighthouse, arms, shield etc. I think it has been mis-attributed. The hair is a lot thicker on rev F than G. The underside of Britannias outstretched arm on rev F is curved slightly upwards towards her elbow, rev G is pretty much flat. One distinct feature of rev F is that the shield rim is flat, the previous reverses and also later reverses have a recessed rim. -

If this is a F282, I have a lower grade example of this and also you get an example of the underlying 1 to left of the 1. Ian Dracott listed this variety in the article in coin news 2004 as 1 beside 2nd 1, 2 known and rarity 7/8. It wasn't mentioned which side the underlying 1 was. -
Does Anyone Know Hearn's Cost Codings?
just.me replied to Rob's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Just a guess, maybe too simple but , EL being L pronounced, L being 12th letter of alphabet and Z=0 EL/Z/Z = 12/0/0 would that have been a realistic price back then? -
George III Half Crown - Chinese Fakes
just.me replied to seuk's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
These modern copies were available a few years back from an eBay seller in China for £2-£3 each. I collect contemporary and modern copies and I bought the set. The 1817, 19 and 20 are all pretty poor in hand, too white and clean and rough surfaces when looking closer but the 1818 is the most convincing and does actually look like silver.
