1862 penny smaller date?
just.me replied to Danz's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The earlier obverses have the fishtail cut left of centre of the ribbon (an uneven triangle). But on Freeman obverse 4, you can find the uneven and the centrally cut fishtails (an evenly shaped triangle), Gouby has referenced the obverse 4 with central cut as obverse G. I believe you have the no colon variety of 1860 Penny? If so, then this should be an obverse 4 with the centrally cut fishtail. They then went back to the uneven cut fishtails for obverse 5. Here is an example of the central cut -

The 'fishtails' are the ends of the ribbon that have the triangular cut at the end. The triangular cut resembles a fishtail . -

Have a look here at Tony Claytons site http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/pics/pen3.html There are good clear photos of the different obverses and reverses. Its a good site with a lot to read and a lot to see. -
1862 penny smaller date?

Hi Scott, obverses 2 and 3 have a large gap between the back of the head and the B of Brit, while the standard 'correct' obverse the B is almost in contact with the head. This is a good point to check as it is easily seen even on the most worn of coins. Telling the obverses 2 and 3 apart on very low grade coins is tricky, but if you get an 1862 even in low grade with either of them, its worth keeping. -
I think the last 1 is too wide for the 8 over 6 reverse. It should be over a space, but it looks to be to a tooth in the photo, unless the photo has distorted this too? The loop of the 8 should also be higher as previously said.

There are also the obverse 2 mule, the obverse 3 mule, the 3 extra plumes on Britannia and the 2 over 1 that are all worth looking out for. -
Hi, 1868 obverse 2 I know to be found on dies 1, 4 and 9 so far (I havent seen a die 7 with obverse 2 but I own one with obverse 3). These numbers also appear with obverse 3, which have all of numbers 1 to 17.

The word swastika is an ancient Sanskrit word (svastikah) which roughly transltes to good luck or well being. Since its use by the Nazi party, its original meaning has pretty much faded into the distance and more often than not it is looked at as being a racist symbol, quite the opposite of its original meaning pre 1930's. Some take the shape as being 4x letter L's. Love, Luck, Life and Light. Wasn't the swastika of peace the other way round though? I'm sure I remember hearing that somewhere before? They can be clockwise (read with the top left quadrant reading as L ) or anti-clockwise, again depending on the origins of use. Hindu uses the clockwise Swastika and the Japanese use anti-clockwise Swastikas as a symbol on maps to denote a buddhist temple like we use a cucifix symbol on our maps to show a church.

George V Florin counterfeit 'mule'
just.me replied to seuk's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The join is very easily seen at the right hand side but at the left can only be seen through a glass. It looks like the penny has been hollowed out and had the reverse half of the Florin inserted, then the edge of the Penny folded over and re-milled?. -

I've maybe seen that before, but what a gem! Is that yours Derek? No, it was sold on e-bay a few years back, I did bid for it but unsurprisingly it went out of reach. Another one which got away was a 1940 penny re-cut with a swastika instead of the union jack. Someone with a time viewer that could look 70 years ahead. I believe the swastika was a good luck symbol before it was adopted by the Nazis. I seem to remember it being used by the National Savings Bank pre war. I have a worcester salt token with a swastika for good luck Its not actually a Swastika, the leg of the Swastika points at the 180 degree, this has the flat at 180 degree. This is the swastika, or Hakenkreuz as it's called in German, distinctly different in use. They are all swastikas . Swastikas can be left or right facing legs depending on their history and origin of use whether it be in Hinduism, catholicism, Airforce badges of Finland etc etc right back to pre christ times. The difference with the Nazi usage of the swastika is that they turned it on a 45 degree diagonal.

Michael Gouby has an EF+ 1902 for £85. I have always been very happy with all the coins I have bought from Michael. -

You have forgeries of those dates? That's interesting. Designed to fool the Edwardian spending public, or 21st century coinies? The 07 and 10 are a lead type soft metal, which I think are contemporary. The 02 is a hard metal and has some sort of corrosion, but is non magnetic, not sure how old it would be? -
It looks like there has been a knock on the corner of the 1, which could be giving the impression of an inverted 1. I know the base of the 1 is certainly missing a serif, but I would want a clearer image, and an example without damage to the digit (where it can be confirmed with certainty that the description is true and accurate). Can you get any clearer images/show me the other example? Hi Colin, there is a small knock to the top right. my other example is knock free. I cant get any clearer pics with my phone so I will send you pics when I can get to my computer tomorrow. Will I send them to your email thats on your site? I sent you a picture of this one a while back along with a few dozen others. You have actually used a few of my pictures on your site. Have you managed to get a F530 ? you were looking for one of these last time we spoke.

Hi, if you still have the Shilling, I'd be happy to buy it. I dont have an 05 in my forgery collection. It would go nicely with my 1902 1907 and 1910. -
1887 arabic1 double florin.
just.me replied to ski's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
am i reading this right? i would disagree, there are loads of obv2's out there for the arabic1, in fact 2b is the normal die pairing given in davies as 541 am i reading this right? obverse1 with the roman numeral is the correct die pairing davies 540 gives as dies 1a all of my roman 1's are obv1 . Yes your right, I got the obverses mixed up, Arabic 1 obverse 1 is scarce Roman I obverse 2 is ex rare (probably only issued as proof) -
1887 arabic1 double florin.
just.me replied to ski's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Peter continued to study silver coins after his book was published. He has found dozens of varieties, die parings etc. that were not originally in his book. He referenced these with a's and b's, even upto e's for some of the varieties found. Quite a lot of the * unconfirmed coins he had marked have now been confirmed too. He dispossed of most of his collection a few years back and used the new a's and b's when selling them through London Coins. The obv2 is a fair bit scarcer than the obv1 for the Arabic 1. Even rarer is the Roman I with obverse 1. I have never seen one but have been reliably told it does exist. -
Am I missing something here?
just.me replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The listing states that the coin is a Sixpence, the obverse and reverse both look like the correct Sixpence types. The SS C Sixpence is scarcer than the Shilling, which might explain the higher price. -
Thinking of selling.
just.me replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Do you have any idea the value of the 1901 1 to space? I've never seen one up for sale described as such. I know they are very difficult to locate, I sent Michael Gouby a picture but he didn't use it, but he did put a note in his new book.He had never seen one. Dave groom also lists it but without a picture. -
Has anyone seen an 1826 Shilling with a Roman 1? It is listed in Coincraft but I have never seen one or a picture of one before. I know coincraft has a few errors and I was wondering if this was an error also? A picture would be great if anyone does have one.
