    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I've seen a few similar ads recently, especially on US eBay. Has anyone the faintest idea what this is? Here's another.

    Cheques

A lot of businesses still make and receive many account payments by cheque. Personally I rarely use them though. My chequebooks have the date printed on them and I note that I'm using one issued in 2011… I wonder if the books ever expire?

    Collecting Software

In my opinion, have an Access, Excel spreadsheet/database back-end or 'office' system for all your detailed records but host your pictorial collection on-line (much cheaper than you might imagine). That way, whenever you attend an auction, sale, coin club, flea-market etc. or just need to take a quick look at one of your coins on an smartphone, iPad or pc, you can! It's also great for linking photos into forum threads (right click on the coin, paste into the thread).
  4. They're surprisingly common and that's among the worst examples I've ever seen! Keep looking (on UK eBay) and you'll definitely find a much better one for less than £30. As mentioned above, the rarities (which are VERY rare) are the miss-spelt 'PENNEY', the dated 1844 and the all silver examples. There are also lots of micro-varieties, for which there's a book published, should you be interested in researching further.

    Merry Christmas

I have a friend who continues to buy every Royal Mail commemerative stamp set issued, purely on the basis that he has all the others (for the last 20 years) and can't stop now! He doesn't really enjoy them, in the sense that he never even looks at them, researches them or has any further involvement with his collection. I've hinted, but haven't the heart to point out that they're virtually worthless!
  6. Totally agree. They have an amazing set up and wipe the floor with the likes of Spink.
  7. It's the only one you'll find. £15K+ is not too much and no different to the prices paid for gold halfpennies. I thought you would go for it.I'm sure you're right Rob, but it came at a bad time in terms of other priorities. Lots of competition to spend that sort of money at home!
  8. I don't mind referenda on any subject but I would like that everybody who intends to vote take an exam on the subject first just to make sure they know what they're talking about. Could be some surprises there...And whilst talking about unelected bodies, can I have a vote on who becomes our next head of state? You mean you aren't looking forward to seeing Charles III coinage? Oh, he won't be a Charles - they always change their name! (At least, George VI and Edward VII did, I'm not sure about George V - but who was? ). My bet is that Charlie-boy will be Fred the First, or possibly Camillum the First. Why not Wayne or Sean or Dean? That would do it for me. or for a modern twist on a classic name: Will.I.am
  9. Not the Eric P Newman sale yet, but I've been watching today's Heritage auction and the prices for top grade items are crashing through estimates. Not really my area, but I watched a plain edge 1847 Gothic Crown proof, graded PR65, make $35,250 and an 1887 £5 proof, graded PR66, hit $47,000! These are big numbers. I liked the 1887 pattern penny in gold but that hit over $20,000 so my fingers kept well away from the keyboard!

    Baldwins New Yor Sale

I hadn't missed them Richard, but thanks! The Heritage sale prices are crazy today!

    Ebay Freak Out!

Very very nice indeed! I'd rate that GEF at least. You have my sincere envy. That's a steal Vicky, and a really nice coin! About 1/100th the price of the UNC example in the recent London Coins auction!
  13. It's said a majority of businessmen advocate staying in the EU as it's their biggest market. Rather than rely on hearsay, or ask only a subset of the population, why not give everyone the chance to decide? It's called 'one man/woman, one vote' or more succinctly, 'democracy'. An old fashioned idea, I know.

    1893/2 penny

That's an example too, Derek. I think you're right about them being reasonably common.

    Coin To Sell

.rar is a file type rather like a .zip archive - it holds compressed versions of files which then have to be uncompressed. If you're using Windows, I thought that .rar files were recognised? On my Mac I long ago downloaded a free utility (UnrarX) which uncompresses them. Maybe there is a Windows version too? Would there be any chance of having these various file extensions on a sticky (in useful references) that people can add to together with a solution to opening the files? Someone sent me an image with a psd(?) extension a while back, but neither I nor the windows program on my computer recognised it, so the image had to be binned. It wasn't the first unopenable file received as Baldwins also format their files in some unintelligible way. Obviously the problem is proprietary software, but nobody is going to buy every available program just to view an image which may not appear. Something along the lines of Adobe reader which allows you to read only would be useful. Actually .psd is fine for me as it's a Photoshop file. Peck, I use a Mac, same as you. I'll need to download a utility then. Thanks.

Not sure what file type you have used (.rar, which I've never come across?) , but I'm unable to open it. I don't collect Roman coins but was interested to take a look.
  17. I agree, reverse D. The colon after 'G' of 'D: G:' is aligned with a border tooth, so not obverse 3 (I can't see the signature to use that as an ID). So F10.

I'm thinking the same as you, Garrett! I'm definitely thinking cleaned, though! The tone of all his bronze coins is unnatural and too consistent, which suggests dipping. I may be wrong though.
  19. I know this has been discussed before but, as far as I can tell from searching, never had it's own 'unlisted varieties' thread. Strictly it's not unlisted as David includes some details in his excellent book, though only two very small photos. I've been going through quite a few 1904 pennies and there appears to be a very definite rotation of the last '4' in 1904. Here's a selection of what I've found:

Mounting Card And Coin Shaped Hole Punch

Welcome to the forum. I can't add anything as my coins are mostly not kept at home, and tend to be in capsules or slabs. It would be interesting to know which method you eventually choose, though, and certainly to see a photo of the finished job!
  21. Very good! Similar to Mark Twain's: "Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt".

    I Wanted To Say Hello

Ah, the great days of Communist cameras! I began with a Russian made Zorki 4 (virtual exact reproduction of a prewar Leica IIIb) for which I got 3 lenses - I still have the camera and standard lens and I bet it works if I got a film for it. I also briefly used a Lubitel (TLR) but it was a hassle getting 120 roll film processed; I did my own D&P of black and white 35mm film back then. And a Leningrad light meter (the Zorki and Lubitel had nothing electronic anywhere in them, not even a light meter) which was pretty good. Now I slum it with a Lumix superzoom FZ camera. Ok, it has a tiny tiny sensor (makes 110 film look like medium format ) but as long as I am aware of its limitations it takes some good pictures... P1000086.jpg I'm far from expert but that's a really well composed photo!

A happy and prosperous New Year to all!
  24. You mean the South Koreans accept bank transfers then? I meant OUR building warships for OURSELVES! But wouldn't we need a shipyard for that?
