I managed to obtain a 2010 20p in my change today. Still no sign of a 10p as of yet though.
-
Sadly I've never actually seen one. I have looked time and again over the years but to no avail! I think I may treat myself to a BU set of all four when I see one for a reasonable price to add to my collection, but I will still keep on checking my change and hope for the best. lol With that I have had much better luck! I managed to obtain one in my change in the late 90's. It was aUNC with just a few scratches but with very nice lustre. I'm thinking that someone either obtained one when they very first came out and put it aside but due to finacial needs had to spend it, or someone had opened a BU set for the same reason. I was also very lucky in picking up the two coin BU set a while ago at a Boot Sale to add to my BU collection. I managed to purchase it for what I thought was a bargain price of £3.95. (Oddly enough the same person at the Boot Sale had the 1989 Bill and Claim of Rights two coin BU set as well. Again I was very lucky in being able to purchase it for £8.) And last week when I was looking around an Antiques Centre, I noticed another one in a tin of other large 50p coins and managed to purchase it for £1. So now I have 3 of them. Only 108,977 to go. lol

I've only managed to obtain my 2p and 5p from my change over the past week, so I'm thinking that they are very new. If I come across anymore I think that I willl hold on to a few nice choice examples just incase.

Over the years I have managed to obtain nearly all of the Commemorative £2 coins from my change. With the exceptions being the 1986 Claim of Rights, 1995 United Nations, 2002 Commonwealth Games (I have never seen one let alone four versions! lol) 2008 Centenery of 4th Olympiad, 2009 Robert Burns and 2010 Florence Nightingale. It has taken me many years to collect all of them. I started when I first saw the 1986 Commonwealth Games coin and I started to put them aside and replacing with better versions as and when I saw them. I have also done the same with the 50p Commemorative issues and have obtained them all with the exceptions being the 1994 D Day, 2009 Kew Gardens and the 2010 Girl Guides. I also have nearly all of the £2 and 50p Commemoratives in BU, but that doesn't count. lol

I have managed to obtain a 1p, 2p and 5p in my change so far. I think that you are right David, I have also noticed that the new coins seem to appear at this time of year. Usually the 1p, 2p and 5p first and then the rest of the denomonations usually appear spread out over the following year.

Thanks Peckris. Abbreviation software sounds very handy indeed! Hopefully all of our collective information can assist Beth.

I've just realised that I have just reiterated most of what Peckris has just said. He must have posted his reply as I was typing.mine out to you. I'm sorry if it seems repetative. If only I could type faster. lol

Hi Beth, Welcome to the forum. Colin has given you some very sound advice. But I would like to add to that if I may. If you do collect coins from your change always try to find the best condition ones that you can. So for example, if you pop to the Post Office or Bank and you are handed a nice shiney new coin you would probably be better off holding on to that, than say one from 10 years earlier that has been well worn and used. Because as Colin mentions modern coins are produced in such vast numbers that I would imagine such coins to be more desirable to possible future collectors. That is not to say that you should spend all of your older coins now, as some of those in the future may become quite scarce. It is so hard to say if any modern coins will hold their value in the future. Who knows, in 25 to 30 years time we may have had one or possibly even two new Monarchs by then, so Elizabeth II coins may appreciate and become desirable. As Colin also mentions, try to keep an eye out for the Commemorative issues. The Royal Mint has produced Commemorative £2 and 50p coins for some years now and some of them are quite scarce even today, so perhaps that is something you may wish to consider. Lasty, if you would like to look into this further, apart from asking questions on the forum, you may wish to consider purchasing a book on the subject. There is one dealing with collecting coins from your change and it may help you. It is aptly called 'Check Your Change' and it has a wealth of information on Decimal coins. It is quite cheap and can be found quite easily. As a new collector myself who collects Commemorative £2 and 50p's, I have recently purchased the book and I can highly recommend it. I hope that helps you P.S. Sorry for such a long post. lol

ACORN Threepences and six pences
RobJ replied to Hello17's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Just to give you a little more information on the dates that you will want to collect Hello17. The Acorn design of Sixpences and Threepences both ran from 1927 to 1936. Although the 1927 coins were issued as a proof coins only and the 1929 Threepence wasn't issued at all. I hope that helps you -
2008 shied design 5p major error or not?
RobJ replied to chris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
That is an excellent find Chris, well done! I do think that it is definitely worth holding on to. It may be similar to the 20p 'Mule' in the respect that there may have been a very short run of them that left the Mint like that and I think that once people realise they will start to look more closely and more may surface. So now I'm on the lookout for one of those as well as the 'Dot to Dot' 10p's and the 20p 'Mule's.' lol -
Dark and Toned or Bright and Lustrous?
RobJ replied to RobJ's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I'm not a fan of cleaned coins either personally. The chap that I have been purchasing my coins from had some cleaned Copper and Silver which he had himself purchased from a collector. They were quite high grade, but due to the cleaning they just seemed very flat and, for want of a better term, lacking life. He also had a simply stunning Gothic Crown which he showed me that he had obtained for one of his customers. It had a almost ethereal blue tone to it. It was really quite beautiful! -
2008 shied design 5p major error or not?
RobJ replied to chris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I'm really sorry Dave but I have just given my spare one away. I've just spent the afternoon at a friend of my better half and her father is also a coin collector. He also had been searching for one for some time too so I gave it to him. Again I'm really sorry, if I had seen this post sooner you would have been more than welcome to it. I do however have a spare 'Between - Between' if it is of any use to you? -

Congratulations on getting your website up and running. I will have a good browse later and if anything should take my fancy I will place an order with you. I believe to add your link to the bottom of each of your posts you need to add it as a signature. It can be found under : My Settings > Your Options - Profile > Change Signature. I hope that helps. -
2008 shied design 5p major error or not?
RobJ replied to chris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I'm really not sure if those coins would appreciate to be honest. Then again I would imagine that people living in The Victorian or Edwardian eras didn't pay too much attention to the coins in their pockets as they were used each and every day, and what was at the time common today fetches a high premium due to it's rarity! So who knows in the future! -
I noticed that in the sellers description that it was 'From the London Mint Collection of Coins.' I think that I'm right in thinking that they are the company that were offering £50 per coin a while ago, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were all genuine as I'm sure that quite a few people would have taken them up on their offer. I wouldn't be at all surprised either if other similar 'One Off' sets start to appear soon. Although I do think that your offer of £2.80 was a bit low, I would have offered £3 and kept the box for you fishing bait! lol

2008 shied design 5p major error or not?
RobJ replied to chris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It certainly is interesting! I would keep hold of it if I were you Chris, as more may yet be found as perhaps people simply notice them at first as in the case of the 20p 'Mule.' It's funny that you should mention 'Check Your Change' as I purchased a copy of that book today. It really is a most fascinating read. I have found two 'Dot to Dot' 10p's in my change today after reading it. lol -
1866 BBritanniar? In Hand Pix
RobJ replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
WOW! That microscope of yours certainly delivered some very clear results. I think that you may have hit the proverbial nail on the head there Azda. It does look like the R has been double struck, and although my knowledge is limited, that is how it at least looks to my eye. -
2008 shied design 5p major error or not?
RobJ replied to chris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi Chris. By upside reverse I take it that you mean that OBV and the REV don't match in the way that they should do? If I'm honest I've not heard of such a coin. I know that when the new designs very first came out I collected a LOT of the different denomonations and sat down over a couple of evenings and had a close look at them. Perhaps I didn't have enough to find such a coin as I had to go through over 100 20p coins to find a 'Mule.' I had no idea that they exised at the time so I think that I was lucky to find one. So your coin may in fact be unique. Or at least one of a very small number. One thing that I did notice however, is that with the 10p coins on some of them I noticed that the position of the portrait had variations. On the vast majority of coins when you hold the reverse design so that the part of the shield design above the lions was straight and spun the coin on the axis the portrait was aligned as it should be, but on some of the coins the portrait seemed to be tilted a little forward. I didn't really have enough 10p coins to make a solid judgement on the percentages, but out of around 200 or so I noticed that difference on a few. I simply put it down to the mass production of the coins as the Royal Mint has neither the time or resources to check each and every coin. lol -
lol It's funny that you should say that as I think that I may have bought mine last Saturday. At least we have adequate time before Christmas to practice our surprised faces. lol

1866 Shiiling BBRITANNIAR?
RobJ replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
That is excellent news! I'm certainly looking forward to seeing those pictures. -
My particular favorite is whilst on a shopping trip and they see something that they MUST have, something that they have waited their whole lives for, something that they would simply die without... Of course, once you have explained that it is fine for them to have it but they will have to pay for it using their own money, that incredibly important life saving thing just doesn't seem that important any longer to them. lol
-
Please accept my apologies Dave. I thought that it was a Charles II 1684 Farthing that you required, but it was infact a James II 1684 Farthing. Sorry for any confusion.
-
This may be of some interest to you Dave. I noticed it when I was browsing through EBay a little while ago. I'm not sure you are already aware of it or not or if it may be within your price range, but I thought that I would let you know just incase you didn't. EBay Item Number : 120647250901 cgi.ebay.co.uk/Very-Rare-King-Charles-ll-11-2nd-Tin-Farthing-1684-Coin-/120647250901?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item1c1722f3d5&autoredirect=off&emvAD=360x562 It is currently at £72 with 4 days to go.

Thank you for your advice Dave. I must admit that I am in complete agreement with you. Whilst I will collect the best coins that I can afford I am under no illusion at all that I would be able to collect each and every one in the highest grade available. As you correctly point out it isn't only the financial aspect that must be considered but more importantly that of the availability of the coins. And even if you had the annual income of a small European country - Which is what it would take to buy such a collection lol - If the coins are not available there is nothing that can be done about it. There is no need to.apologize Dave. I welcome any and all advice, especially from a experienced collector such as yourself, and quite frankly I think that I would be a fool not to take notice and listen to it.

I believe that there is an upload limit of 150kb. So yours are just fractionally over that. A suggestion perhaps would be to upload them elsewhere and post a link here as that way you would not have to sacrifice on image resolution.
