continuing my interest in apparantly unsellable coins, ive now moved from double florins ( still looking for a roman 1 proof, dealers ) to 3 shilling coins. a local dealer has a very nice 1814 coin which appears to be a proof. spink or esc do not list proof for this year. ive also noticed london coins have an 1811 unrecorded proof for sale. does anyone here have any experience of the possibility of there being any unrecorded proofs for the 1814 3 shillings......any dealers handled/sold a piece like this? thanks........ski

1905 Florin - fair price for the grade?
ski replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
yes there seems to be a bit of an overlap between the two, being ugly and calling it tarnish helps in understanding the diference and knowing why toning is good. ......thats where im at with a couplle of my coins.....im suspicious -
the things you can learn here eh?.......fascinating im gonna test your jam theory next time im in africa.

1905 Florin - fair price for the grade?

difficult to say from the pic.....my gut response is yes.....because it looks a little flat, less lustrous....if you know what i mean....i have a couple of florins that i think may have been dipped......theyre clean for sure but somehow dont feel right. i think im going to have to try this for myself on a couple of lower grade coins......interesting. -
i think its a personal view that goes with age, i donth think a 1967 penny is old, my son thinks its ancient, my 1554 tanner, now thats old......to me......but not to my mother-in-law who can probably remember the day it was struck . sorry debbie....but coming back to cars...... arent there veteran and vintage classes, a moving scale based on age of the vehicle......i think thats how we look at age, with a coin, the scale moves with the owner/viewer. ski

1905 Florin - fair price for the grade?
ski replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
im glad peckris isnt here tonight............we would both be in for a ticking off............ coming back to the coin shown at the start of the thread........dipping may improve the coin, or not dependant on your view, as you say it may make it blotchy.....i think that was the term used.......looking out for a more pleasing example may be the better option rather than trying to make the coin something it isnt and maybe reducing its value along the way. tarnishing/toning...........i can see what your saying, maybe the difference is as you say, tarnish is the build up of grime...........im still not sure if i personally like coins dipped or cleaned, maybe for me the crud is good. -
divining is a lot easier on a beach dont you think?.........do you really need the rods

your words had me drifting away to a far flung paradise where the trout is delivered from a farm and the smell of bacon and shrimps waft through the balmy evenings air, pink floyds "marooned" burst my eardrums adding to the atmosphere and wine ads to the mood...........and then you f**k it up by mentioning the x factor........... at least the datsun cherry brings us back to the subject of FOOD.

1905 Florin - fair price for the grade?
ski replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Dave.....thats a mighty impressive result. my question is though......what's the difference between tarnishing and toning? and equally important if their the same, why remove it?. i have to say, i like your coin in both pictures, theres been lots of discussion on this forum about shiny versus toned for silver, with many preferring toned to bright, the reasoning being the toning adds that bit of character.....if i were buying your coin......the toned pic may sell it to me. ski -
japanese without the a is......japnese.....or jpanese......or jpnese.....but never japenese jockinese..........im completely illiterate....... och aye the noooooo yamato having a whaling ship out and about to catch a pike is a little ott, dont you think.......but then ive seen the movie clip where crocodile dundee goes fishing with dynamite..........did you ever see any crocodiles in dundee or are you sworn to secrecy. do crocodiles like to eat pike or trout and if so, with chips or with green leaf salad?.

sooo many questions...... 1/........did they throw the pike back? 2/........if so, how many people did it take to throw back the 55lb pike? 3/........if not, is the lake now over-run with trout? 4/........why were you sworn to secrecy?......was it during the war? 5/........how did they get all the trout to exactly 1lb? 6/........what car transported the fishing tackle to the lake?

How useful is this as a research tool?
ski replied to Rob's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
and yet sometimes difficult to be completely reproducable on a consistant scale. its a wonderful concept.....the process can be initiated on a very basic level by individuals working to a time scale, its human nature to develop easy ways and short cuts to achieve an end product..........but at that time, with the limited resources, im not so sure. that said if blank flans were prepared by 1 or 2 individuals....who knows.........worth persuing. are there blank files ever reported/ found from this mint for these coins? ski -

i get most of the auction houses catalogues, either by snail mail or download from websites......i wonder if im typical of most here?.......but the more news the better, so yea keep posting Paul theres great banter here when something funny comes along and if you read many of the posts, theres usually a remark regarding daves spelling, but thank you for clarifying........we now know that dave is in fact a pseudo yank and not jockinese after all forgive me dave......i couldnt resist.
