    Ebay's Worst Offerings

we think some of the coin photos are bad on ebay, but how about this pic advertising an iphone.....http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/iphone-3-/230999096752?pt=UK_Mobile_Phones&hash=item35c89e7db0#ht_178wt_1170

anything and everything it seems.....except beef
  6. although the photo doesnt show it, there is a very faint hint of a middle bar to the "f" in the fra legend. Although a worn coin, i dont think the "f" has worn to an "I" as the other letters seem complete.....what do you guys think? Ski
  7. thank you for the huge number of replies...........im completely underwhelmed.
  8. yes i did mention it in my original post but the pic taken indoors didnt really show it, i hope its clearer from the pics ive taken today. Ski
  9. the better outdoor light has helped show the very faint hint of the middle bar on the "f". Ive also noticed the top bar of the "e" in rex is very thin, so could this just all be because the coin is very worn?. ski
  10. took a couple of quick pics in the garden this morning, the first here of the full coin showing the hib and fra letter I.
  11. dont mind you probing. it will help me learn what coin i have. the ira for fra variety is also listed in ESC, r4 for rarity. Ski
  12. okay will try and get some more pics up tomorrow afternoon when ive some time. the i of hib looks just like a capital I or like a roman numeral 1...... is the i of hib known to differ in the ira for fra variety then?. Ski
  13. I think this coin is of weak and/or uneven strikes due to thin flans caused by the use of over-pressed-too-thin sheets of metal. never mind all the bollox talked about by the experts on this magificent forum.............just wait a frigging minute though......i wasnt there when they rolled the sheet of metal and unevenly/weakly struck this coin.....SO I MUST BE WRONG!!!!!.not really the proof you were looking for. i bet theres nobody that can give you the "proof" you need in relation to the striking of this coin over more than 75 years ago, or any time it may have been subjected to some chemical treatment since.......but..............theres possibly hundreds of years of experience in handling coins here, many have seen this effect on a coin before and offered theyre opinion on how it may have come about, but hey......what do they know when you title a post "Errors explained? Opinions as to cause welcomed".....please dont be disappointed if no proof is offered but opinions are.

  15. im not a completist but i do have a few microvarities, ive not searched out such coins as must haves, more just bought them at fairs when ive seen them, so i think pecks original post here reflects where im at. im not sure that the number of daves books sold is a good indicator of numbers of collectors of micro varities. my reason for saying this is just that i wouldnt care really if i didnt have any micro varities, but i bought daves book (silver) out of interest for the coins i collect, and what a marvellous read it was and a great referance book too, i also have to admit to adjusting the tickets on some of my coins with the die parings............damn i may be a micro collector after all like the sound of that app Dave.

    "CGS comes of age"

even if that aspiration isnt a reflection of all coins available, but just those within that particular system. coin collectors have long aspired to buying items from notable collections with great provenance when theyre sold on, you dont need a slabbed coin to get your name in lights.....a best known slabbed coin is still only a best known slabbed coin, and not neccasarily a best known coin ever. So........the changes to the cgs system....is it CGS coming of age?......NO. is it a step in the right direction.....i really do think so...........but theres soo many steps still to take...We think here cgs are the better tpg co...i do too...better value for money and maybe a better grading system.....but it only satisfys a small percentage of the coin collecting community in the uk. More than this, change needs to be made to bring on board those who are maybe synical ( myself included ), those who are diehards for the raw market, and above all else , those who collect coins for the love of holding a beautiful piece of our history and heritage, without some damned need to score some numerical advantage over another with a similar ( maybe even less desirable ) coin. and thats whats wrong with the whole tpg systems. Viva la difference

    "CGS comes of age"

Couldnt agree more....if this is an attempt by CGS to sway my opinion on slabbing/grading, it hasnt worked. I would add however that the idea of cgs just grading between 0 and 100 is a good move, for those into such things as wanting the highest in the scale, it will satisfy them. But.....they shot down this fantastic earth shattering change to their system with the inclusion of that table. i wonder Peck how serious they will take your reply.....it would be great to think there may be an alternative route to slabbing.....BUT......i still like to grade my own coins and more importantly ...those i wish to purchase. i get it wrong sometimes, i get it right sometimes, but in both ways i buy what i like not what a number says. And that i wonder is how slabbing/grading companies can ever satisfy those who like to grade our own purchases.

    "CGS comes of age"

Come of age.....what the heck.....does it matter. is the dropping of grade good......yup very much so, why on earth did cgs not go this route in the first place. they made their decision to have a scale of 0 to 100 and should have just gone with that.......the refereances to existing raw grading systems is a problem and well done away with.......so why the hell the table to raw grades and the sheldon scale?????.......for christ sakes just do it, 0 to 100 and get rid of everything else, by producing this table....theyve achieved zip, theyve kept the confusion going. yes indeed.....a nice coin is a nice coin all the same, regardless of whether someones given it a score out of 100. 21. the small 8 variety of the 1819 sixpence is catalogued in esc as the 8 being very small. looking at my 1819 the 8 does look smaller, but maybe its the right size but displaced. How small is the 8? and do you think my coin is the regular 8 or not? Ski
  22. thanks all.....seems like a regular 8 even if it is a little irregular as peck points out. I will leave it catalogued as is for now. Ski
