  1. or which, having been current there, has at any time after 16th May 1969 ceased to be so. get it?????
  2. incidentally........... theres a guy who regularly sells on ebay current coins that he gold plates....this may fall foul of any statute. he could find himself in hot water under current acts.
  3. you may have a problem if someone reports you for drilling a hole in a double florin.....or any other coin which is still legal tender, as peckris states, this is to prevent exporting of coins that are current legal tender for metal values. demonitized coins are legally no longer coins just slabs of metal that were previously coins. we are in fact mostly slabs of metal collectors............as the penny brigade regularly demonstrate here
  4. definetly no.....the answer is in your own post. "No person shall, except under the authority of a licence granted by the Treasury, melt down or break up any metal coin which is for the time being current in the United Kingdom or which, having been current there, has at any time after 16th May 1969 ceased to be so." the old penny ceased to be current after the 16th of May 1969 by being demonitized on Aug 31st 1971
  5. sorry to go off at a slight tangent..... ive just been looking at double florins in the forthcoming london coin auctions. 1 of the coins (1888) is advertised as having the upper left serif of the letter j from jeb initials on the neck as missing. ive checked my collection of double florins and to me this seems normal on a coin graded around vf as it seems to be just worn away. the advertised coin is graded a/unc i have some EF examples also and there is a hint of both serifs, the exception being an ef 1889 inv 1. my unc all seem to have a full J. is this just an indicator of wear and therefore grade or just plain old fashioned sales pitch, or are there known but uncatalogued varieties. 6. okay.....where do we start with this..... well i was also thinking along the lines of dodgy car dealers not stopping me from driving. Dave.....i can only assume that you started collecting coins , like all of us, for the things they represent, the history, the intrinsic value, collecting that final piece that finishes a run , their desirability of ownership. All good things. but like any purchase, whether its for work or pleasure, theres an asshole prepared to gain from someones lack of knowledge/ vulnerability...... however dave......for every asshole, theres a hundred maybe a thousand good people, good sellers/traders....a good few here too, just look at the good folk youve conversed with on this great hobby on this forum alone, you gonna let 1 asshole ruin that enjoyment?...........okay, theres an asshole out there..........i bet theres more than 1........how many people misadvertised 20p coins on ebay over the last couple of years?. i admire your passion, youre posts regularly reflect that. Go ahead and take time to reflect, but your passion better serves you in collecting coins, discussing aspects of collecting with all here than getting upset over a dodgy dealer. remember also, for people who visit here, youre mostly preaching to the converted, its not the informed collectors here that need enlightening....that doesnt mean they dont support you. its very easy to become embroiled in the "politics" of any hobby, and that can detract from the hobby itself............Dave, get back to enjoying coin collecting.......theres a lot of history in them pieces you own, thers a lot of pleasure to be had from their ownership, theres a lot of pleasure to be had from discussing those pieces and sharing them with your fellow collectors.........please continue to do so.........SKI

    Iphone

im a pc lover and i like apple products too........... im a photographer, macs used to rule the roost, pcs are now as good, most of the press i work for now use pcs. i love my itouch and my iphone is the mutz nutz. some of what ive read here is factually incorrect. it is possible for example to create folders on the itouch for images, this could have for example 50 or maybe 100 images in each folder, not too much bother then to retrieve an image stored in a numerical system, the itouch does rotate automatically as soon as the device is rotated. a dedicated app would be brill, until then the touch or iphone, if set up right are great tools.......dont dismiss them out of hand, if you look closer, you may be surprised, theyre very easy to use....ask my 78 year old dad!!!.

  18. ive had David groom's book since christmas and its a great read. The book covers all 20th century varieties of both silver coinage and their cupro nickel replacements and decimal cu-ni coinage. The great thing about the book is the photos. Each variety is shown in a detailed photo of the obverses and reverses, along with descriptions, which make identification real easy. i got the contact details here on this forum and david quickly dispatched the book once he received payment. It was at christmas, £9-99 plus £3p+p, great value for money! heres the link you may wish to read on this forum to get latest prices. http://www.predecimal.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=5135&st=0&p=38542&fromsearch=1entry38542 i hope that link works okay ive no connection to David Groom , just a very satisfied customer......i recommend it!!!
