ive a couple of 10 p's and one 50p, like peckris, i bought mine because they were just too cheap to not buy. no real interest in them, they lurke in a cupboard somewhere. ski -
it may just be a question of different standards of photos, but the fields look very scratched in the repaired photo compared to the original photo. If however the fields were okay in the original and have been scratched in the repair/cleaning process, are we not looking at one step forward and one step back?. i would answer honestly in saying yes in one aspect the aesthetics of the coin have been improved and in another maybe not so. if however the coins fields were scratched but didnt show in the original....then yes clearly the aesthetics have improved, its desireability however, ........maybe not for me. No i havent looked at stocktons site.....perhaps i should out of interest, to get a feeling for the excitement this repair has generated....whilst i can marvel and admire the quality of work....im still not convinced i would wish to own a coin that has been retooled no matter how rare.....as in robs case of his gold halfpenny...if i were in a position to own such a piece.....i could live with the scratch knowing it was unique.....and original.

yes a good point, but you know many have stated here they prefer toned to pristine. the art/antique worlds certainly does much restoration, sadly there are many dishonest coin sellers, a problem shared with the art/antique community. a great repair has allowed you the pleasure of owning such a piece, my concern however is when its eventually moved on, is the unscrupulous seller going to want £100 or try to pass it off as £700. as ive said before..its a great repair......just not for me.

i may be wrong but i think i read thats because ketchup has vinegar in it, so equally brown sauce may work and vinegar too. ski -

to be honest Peck, my answer would be i wouldnt want a fake or a repaired coin. I can see the attraction of the repair for some.....its just not for me.

No Dave I wasnt thinking specifically of your coin or you, just generalising . I started with cleaning as a natural lead in to tooling. I also suggested that one mans view is different to another, and that's good for discussion. I do feel that there's a difference between cleaning a muddy old coin that's found and of little value to discover what it is, compared with cleaning a coin to dupe some poor soul out of his hard earned cash. And that's my concern with tooling and where it will lead. Ski

I went on ebay today with the intention of looking for a few coins. up flashed the littlewoods ad, steam irons, cameras....the usual stuff in a half price sale. Wait a minute...whats this...the ad changed to .....Myleene Klass straplass bra's and other lingerie......yummy. i cant seem to find coins on the bay anymore

as a coin collector for around 45 years....i still believe in not cleaning coins. there has been many discussions on here about cleaning/dipping and there seems to me to be quite a contradiction with some advocating these practices and then others pointing out cleaned/overcleaned and dipped coins on ebay as being ruined. the boundaries are getting fuzzier by the day, maybe its okay if not overdone, one mans overdone is another mans choice, whos to say what is right other than the prospective buyer. i will stick with uncleaned. And so now tooling. weve read on here how it was unacceptable to one forumite when he sold on a coin that was later retooled, have the boundaries become blurred with this practice now more acceptable, this thread would suggest so So to what extent will this become acceptable and to what point would a coin be deemed to become a fake, will we see halved long cross pennies rebuilt? or would that be too much. I wonder if the unscrupulous sellers on ebay will latch onto this big time, in the same way we read on this forum about the ir full lustre unc pennies that are nothing better than fine. the danger then is that someone ends up paying prices akin to a non tooled coin for a repaired piece. my personnal preferance....well i like the holding a piece of history thing, if its holed, its holed, the hole is part of that coins journey through time. I can choose to buy it or not. all that said..........its a bloody good repair
