i gather it isn't just me who is sick and tired of these ridiculous "offers" from the mint, i get emails almost daily asking if i would like this bit of tat or that bit of tat. unless it is a genuine collectable offer i tend to put them straight into the bin. and yes i bought all the olympic coins for my grandson but any others no thanks!!! -
found this on an american web site, a really beautiful coin ruined by the severe toning, not to mention the slab............

GOTHIC CROWN LISTED AS A FAKE
moneyer12 replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
our friends in shangai are quite adept at producing top quality counterfeits. -
i use the book "grading british coins" and my own experience and expertise.

i hold my hands up and admit i have bought a forgery thinking it was genuine. it was an american trade dollar dated 1872 and looked to be legit and my little knowledge of usa coins made me a little naive, i only found out it was fake after i asked my american friend and he told me the coins were only minted from 1873. i may be absolutely shit hot on uk coins but the usa coins still leave me a little confused.
-
i've been using acetone for years after an american friend recommended it, i have used it on most types of coins including copper. it has removed the dirt but not the patina, i had one coin from sweden which had a black tar type substance on one part of the edge, as soon as it went in the acetone the substance dissolved without harming the coin.
-
our friends across the pond relentlessly slab almost every coin they come into contact with, personally i think that slabs are abhorrent.......................what's your opinion??
-
to clean gunk from a coin dip it in acetone, then rinse under clean water, this removes most of the crap, if that fails try an orbital sander, and duraglit (only joking)

your not nick griffin by any chance? hardly, i'm jewish............
