Thank you for the information,I was not sure if anything could be done due to the fact that it was an Auction rather than straight sale.I have had some of my best coins from here and didn't want to upset anyone. Sorry also to Azda for taking the thread slightly off topic.

I think we must ALL be having auction syndrome at the moment! I've had to return 2 of the last 5 eBay purchases (vicky 3d & 1901 HC), which is about my yearly quota ordinarily! I don't know what to do with it,there is a dent on his chin that is barely visible on the photo, and the coin itself looks very bright.

I had one winning bid for this Auction, which was the George IV 1820 Halfcrown, coin arrived on Wednesday.I thought that it would be my final type example for these, however I'm not sure.Few things the picture didn't show.

Cgs Trial Part 3
Benny who replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Unlisted in ESC and Spink but I think well enough known ... Have you spotted the variety? Looks like the BP without stops, cant see the other one though, unless the missing serif on the farthing. No stop after B (but there is after P), the other variety they have found I can't quite make out myself and it is on the 1728 ... The G,was looking at 23837 which has a more progressive die crack through the garter and shield,so it looks like yours is an earlier coin.On saying that 23837 was given a grade of 60,and in my opinion yours is better. -

Cgs Rejects/coins Not Worth Paying To Grade
Benny who replied to rpeddie's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I would not be totally put off,all the slab houses are the same,I have found quite a few mistakes by NGC and PCGS,and I would have to agree that human factors come into the grading more than they would let on.Would the same coin get the same grade before a good night or on the day after? CGS are by far the best for grading British coins in my opinion, and although not everyone will agree comand a slight better figure from the raw if selling on sites such as Ebay. I agree with you Benny. CGS is the best at grading British coins, and a slabbed coin from them (for British coins) would mean more to me than a slabbed coin from PCGS or NGC. The latter do a good job with USA coins, but leave a lot to be desired with British coins. I think NGC and PCGS both need one of Derek's grading books!......Ha,Ha! Sorry chaps this was supposed to reply to the previous post that I wrote Mental note hit multiquote before adding a reply. -
Cgs Rejects/coins Not Worth Paying To Grade
Benny who replied to rpeddie's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think if the coins are going to America, say through Heritage keep the Ngc graded British coins asis,if going through a British company CGS would by the best way forward. Take a look at the 1817 shilling at present on Ebay a new variety UIN 24639,this more than likely wouldn't have gotten as much attention had it been slab free. -

Cgs Rejects/coins Not Worth Paying To Grade
Benny who replied to rpeddie's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think these two are a fair enough example of inconsistency 3711 and 12559. I don't mind the slabs, however I think I would be the same,if the slab costs more than the coin,it would probably be as nice in a shop bought holder, and the money could go on the next new addition. -
Cgs Rejects/coins Not Worth Paying To Grade
Benny who replied to rpeddie's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
There ya go. £30 for a slab, can't be bad. Could probably buy 100 on his own at that price, and he had 6 rejects. Thats some good money by anyones standards You could say they are the much rarer yellow sticker variety . I think they are trying to give you something for your money, before they just came back in a flip,so at least now you get the slab albeit rejected. Having said that if it was valued at 2k,and came back rejected UNC scratched,at least you know that CGS graded it as UNC apart from said scratch. This means that they have stated the coin is UNC rather than anywhere from 75 to 85 as a normal grade. -

I think that the coins rejected are now sent back slabbed with a yellow sticker, rather than the normal white. This is similar to the NGC details route. -
Utterly dismal day, every lot I wanted sailing into obilivion, with me trying to catch it in a tea strainer. Then when the sale of all the lots I wanted was over,I thought the 1887 halfcrown Proof looks OK lot 286,i'll go home with that. That was a mistake lovely coin but for over a 1K not a chance. awell two months ogiling the catalogue down the swanny.the joy of coin addiction.

I think DNW are agents for PCGS,so the coin(s) can be sent there first. They sort out all the rest, and send the coin back to you,not sure of the price difference if any.

Fake Cromwell Crown
Benny who replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Trouble is that if these types of fakes sell for theses prices,it will give them a marketable value, other than the melt value, which in turn, would in my opinion make them more acceptable in the wider coin collecting community. If the quality of this coin and the newer gothics' are anything to go by,and these are made for a few pound more than what the Silver content is valued at, I would expect to see more turning up over the next few years,or even more common coins, anything over a hundred pound and they have doubled their money. -
Fake Cromwell Crown
Benny who replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think lot 1951 is very similar, the mark below the 1,the mark across from the Q and shield, and the marks just after the O of BELLO,just to mention a few on the reverse. -
I think the W stood for world coins when CGS first started, then mint errors were added to the W, now they all have just a number attached world and errors inclusive upto around 29000.The w1274 to w1280 aren't available so might just be a computor error.Give them a quick phone call just to verify the slab.

Where To Buy Job Lots Of Old Coins - Need Thousands For An Artwork.
Benny who replied to Kingkingy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
You mentioned a Bun penny,if this is the colour and size you are going for,why not use current issue 2p and 10p for the silver, both can be ordered from your bank in bulk, and will still be worth the same when you have finished. I can get you these delivered to a UK address 12.5p for each 10p and 6p for every 2p,these figures include the handling charge. -
George III Half Crown - Chinese Fakes
Benny who replied to seuk's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Yes - it's fake like the 'Italien' one. Both seems to be of the high quality sort. You will probably find that its has coin alignment (reverse turned 180 degrees to the obverse) whereas the genuine coins has medal alignment (0 degrees). It has the 180 rotation, originally thought "great this is a bit different",but alas dispointment has a bitter taste. I think the best pointer is above the P in PENSE.Tried out the ring test and it actually sounds the same as a real 1818,or at least I can't tell the difference. -

Hit the post button before adding the weight, which is 14g or there abouts, the scales tip between 13.9 and 14.This could be put down to wear on a nomal halfcrown, however I don't think there is enough wear for this to have lost 0.2g. The reeding also looks more mordern similar to that of an old 10p. -

Wouldn't mind going to both of these,if the dates where a bit closer together, definitely stay away from the beer.Last time I had a drink through an auction,it was beans on toast for a month, and the wife not talking to me.....come to think of it,that's not that bad, peace and quiet for a month, and a few inches from the waist.

CGS Trial Part 2
Benny who replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The 1705 came from London Coins in 2004 when graded aEF/EF. I had that marked down a bit though on account of the obvious wear to the plumes. Fully struck plumes come up to a sharp point, though I suspect that not many have seen coins in that condition, CGS included. Don't know if the previous record had any bearing on the assigned grade? The gVF for the 1707 is far too generous. Also did they record the M over inverted M in MAG as a variety? The 1709 I acquired from a serious shilling collector on ebay a long time ago. It was covered in grease and crud, which dissolved off to produce quite a pleasingly toned coin underneath. Probably due to the previously attached crud given the variance in toning between the two sides! The 1700 is where I had it, though needless to say acquired as an ebay unc from a dealer who should know better. Thanks for that Rob, I think you either have a photographic memory or very good records to recall these 4 coins I bought from you last year, all of which I remain very pleased with! They are not finalised yet, but I did point out the M over inverted M on the 1707 to them, so hopefully that will be recorded in their database and on the slab. The 1700 and 1705 are 2 of my very favourite coins ... I don't believe the 1705 was previously slabbed by CGS as this is the first of the type on their records, so I suspect they have no idea it was previously sold by their main shareholder London Coins - and I didn't know about that 'provenance' so I didn't tell them! I think that the M over inverted M has been marked as a 1707.09 which is with plumes on their website,so it might be worth while asking CGS before it has been slabbed, would be easier to change now rather than having to return it. -
Hi Benny It is my favourite. There are quarterly big fairs and the other months about 50 dealers. Would probably try for the quarterly, even though with 50 dealers any month sounds good, the local fairs around here are antique with very few coins. Thanks Peter for the info.
