How To Run A Customer Caring Coin Business
Nick replied to Colin88's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Peckris is over 100 and he's up to date on Computers True. I was only saying to Alan Turing the other day that IBM really should move out of calculators into the new Sperry-Rand valve machines - can't let ENIAC take all the credit You're great, Peck, you crack me up! You might want to worry about somebody that is talking to Alan Turing... -

It is a florin, and it's 1872, not 1852. -

I can't get the thumbnail to enlarge, so I can't say for certain. If it is, the 'gothic' date will read mdccclii. -
Thanks for the Ripples link - that's a definite MacTube download! (Oops, I never said that* ). Always been one of my favourite tracks. 'Trick Of The Tail' comes pretty close to 'Selling England By The Pound' in my personal Genesis pantheon. We prided ourselves on 'discovering' Genesis when at Uni, when they were virtually unknown before 'Foxtrot'. I saw them 3 or 4 times back then. One of them you wouldn't believe - it was AFTER Foxtrot was released but they obviously had to fulfil a booking made before then : they were second on the bill to Medicine Head (no, really!) in a University hall of residence 'bop' where there was no proper stage, just a temporary structure of wooden blocks. Yet professional to the end, they did the full show - Gabriel with his flower head, then the long red dress with fox head. All I can say is 'Wow, just to be there. Did it really happen?' http://donignacio.com/art/genesispic.jpg *sadly, he seems to have protected it from download happily, someone else has the same version on YouTube If you use FireFox and install the extension "DownloadHelper" you can download and "save to file" any YouTube video (or other sites for that matter, Vimeo for example) that appears to be protected against download.

How To Insert Pictures Into A New Topic?
Nick replied to ChKy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Yes. That's the best way for PhotoBucket images. You can also configure PhotoBucket itself so that the annoying URL link tags don't appear. -

Pasting from Photobucket works the same for me as it did before, except that I do not see the inserted image(s) until I have submitted the post. I click in the IMG field and then CTRL + V into here: This displays the URL until I submit the post, and the embedded image thereafter. I hope that helps! You still have the URL link connected to your picture though. -
How To Insert Pictures Into A New Topic?

Having just added that picture, I see the issue. It's those f***ing url tags again. The easiest way around the issue is to copy the "Direct Link" option and then use that with the "Insert image" from the toolbar. -

Cgs Rejects/coins Not Worth Paying To Grade
Nick replied to rpeddie's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
[rant] Bloody Photobucket! The pictures are the same size as here and despite the presence of a magnifying glass with a + inside, there's no way to zoom in. That's why I hate it so much, it's SO counter-intuitive to use. [/rant] Anyway, I'm not so sure the first is "clearly inferior" to the second? The attractive toning serves to emphasize any slight rubbing that may be present, while the untoned example conceals it. But just looking at two places : St George's right pec, and the dragon's haunch, I can see what seems to be slight flattening on the second which isn't present on the first. So I'd conclude that grading those two isn't as easy a comparison as you might think. (And even though I can't zoom in on the pictures, they are already at least twice lifesize). I don't think that the CGS photographs are any good to start with. No two of them are taken using the same setup, making them useless for comparison purposes. -
Cgs Rejects/coins Not Worth Paying To Grade
Nick replied to rpeddie's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
My point entirely Peter! I think that because of the methods used to strike proofs, with specially prepared dies and blanks and often multiple strikes, a high grade proof should be able to obtain a higher number than an equally high grade circulation coin. The strike should be sharper, the rim and the edge should be crisper and the fields should be more reflective. If these qualities are part of the assessment then it would help to explain why circulation coins max out at around 90-92 and proof coins can achieve nearer to 100. -

Just had a quick scan of the CGS population report and there are some non-proofs with scores of 90+, but not that many. -

...and then he can tell us about their worthless guarentee (which he promised to clear up last time he was here - but didn't). -
Do we know how long DNW normally take to dispatch lots? I've only ever collected in person before. On one occasion, not that long ago, I paid my online invoice before the day's auction had finished and received my coins the next day. Impressive.

...and they are all being hoovered up by one buyer (no 16). I think No 16 is buying on behalf of others as he was buying loads yesterday, I think it was him sitting at the table and was taking telephone bids. Ok. That would explain it. Either that or he has seriously deep pockets.

I thought it went for £470 hammer? That's about half Spink UNC book price (£1000). CCGB has the UNC at £400 That seems a bit low.

Creative writing at its best! Jane Austen would be proud.

And all while punk was having its day in the sun gutter, too! Actually, I think Then There Were Three is a much maligned album containing some great songs. Both of those albums are a bit late for my taste. "Nursery Cryme" and "Selling England by the Pound" are my two favourites. Selling England... is arguably my favourite Genesis album of all, and unarguably a classic. I can always listen to 'Firth of Fifth'. The Cinema Show is a track I never tire of listening to.
-
Most surprising result for me at DNW today was the 1887 proof halfcrown selling for £1100. Only 3x Spink book price.
-
If that is the sort of cash a student has access to these days, then I should be entering into education once again.
-
1853 proof crown just went for £24k.

No, given that it's the same coin. It certainly hasn't gone up in value by two grand in just 3 months.
