Help with Silver Groat identification
crashetta posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi All. I have found a silver Groat as pictured in attachments. I am trying to work out if it is an Edward V or something else and figured this would be the best place to find out exactly what i have. Many thanks for any advice or help you can give. Kind regards, Tim. -
Help with Silver Groat identification

Hi azda. Spink 2011, Coins of England book arrived today. Many thanks for the tip. From what i can see i have a Half Groat rather than a Groat and it seems to match the description for a 1621. I have Edward VS but not sure what an Annulet is? I have a cross which looks most like 4 and then what looks like a c or o, followed by the EdwardVS. Can you please let me know if i am assuming correctly? Cross would make it 1356-61. From the pictures how would you grade this? Met a German guy on a flight to China on November 4th. He was travelling from Shanghai to a coin convention about 3 hours by train from the city. As this site has a German connection i wondered if he would be traceable. He has worked with World coins as a job until he retired a year or so ago. Just a long shot! Kind regards, Tim. -

Thank you Colin. I have sent you what i have but as Azda says they are probably no good due to the shine from the flash. Thanks for the advice Azda. I have a friend coming over next week who is a professional photographer and he also said about using natural light and something about a raised glass background to give some depth. May have mis-understood but hopefully have something better for you next week. I am sure from what Rob has said already it is probably nothing special but my 2 boys are really intersted in finding out exactly what we found as am I. Its really interesting seeing all of the possibilities of what it might be and seeing how much trouble they went to so long ago. Have a chest of 1890 ish to 1969 mixed coins in the loft i might do some homework on. Have been researching a decent book that would cover this period. Any advice welcome. Kind regards, Tim. -

] Hi Azda. Really sorry but is the OBV what us newbies would call the back? I do have some really big 2500pixel wide ish picture in good detail with less light but the Photbucket seems to load them smaller. Did you crop the others from the Photobucket link or the ones i loaded? Thanks again for doing that! Regards, Tim. -

Thank you Rob and Azda. Thats really kind of you to go to this trouble and so quickly. As the width is only approximately 22mm does this mean it is a half groat? Trying to find out what i can but the sizes seem to vary so much. Kind regards, Tim. -

Help with Silver Groat identification
crashetta replied to crashetta's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks Rob. I have tried doing that with my last post by putting one on just short of the 150kb limit but agree its not really big enough. I am not over good at setting up something like Photo bucket but will try over the next few days to do this. The originals are about 2600 pixels wide and look very detailed but appreciate i need to give them some sort of link! Kind regards, Tim. -
Help with Silver Groat identification

Thank you for the warm welcome to your friendly website! I am new to this and reading Edward V rather than Edward IV or another, led me to think it was possibly a Edward 5th coin. I have no idea if it is or if this is rarer than any other Groat, hence my asking for some constructive help with this. I have just read, Edward V., 1483. Short as was the reign of this young king, coins are said to have been issued in his name and by his authority; none however are known to have been his have come down to us; and it is more probably that none were ever struck, or, if they were, that they were struck from dies of his father's coins So where would the best place be to find out what i have? Thank you in advance of any help. Kind regards,Tim.
