1844 AANNO edge error crown - unrecorded variety
AJWcoins posted a topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
Got this one today and it appears to be a unrecorded variety. I've seen the 1845 has this error which is noted in 'Collectors Coins GB' but this is the same error but on a 1844 crown. Here's some photo's: -
Text books for Jubilee crown die pairings?
AJWcoins posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hello everyone its been a while since I've posted but was hoping I could get some pointers. In a nutshell I'm looking for a book that goes in to detail about the die pairings of Vicky jub head crowns. It may be worth mentioning I already have Davies and the ESC, a friend has mentioned there is a book that covers this subject but can't remember which book it is. Any ideas anyone? -
Text books for Jubilee crown die pairings?
AJWcoins replied to AJWcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Chingford thanks for the info on the book (£15 from Galata) should be worth checking out. I imagine this may be the book he was thinking off if its the only Crown publication you can think of although I wasn't just interested in proofs. 1887 Jubilee thanks for the link got me measuring the T's to the R's, although I scaled it down to a average of 5 measurements. As for what varieties I think exist I couldn't really say as I'm just looking for more information at the moment. Is it just the 1887 your interested in or all Jubilee heads? -

Azda its a case of my friend knowing that such a book exists but he can't remember the title hence me asking here. Peckris thanks for the pointer. -
Hi everyone been a while I know but thought I'd add some info. I had a email this morning saying they were expecting the books today/tomorrow so will probably start sending them out on Monday. So fingers crossed they will start cropping up here and there the early part of next week.

AJWcoins replied to AJWcoins's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
Not a problem Declan. do you know or indeed does anyone know if this error has been encountered before? I can't find anything about it except for there is a 1845 with the same error. -

Thought I'd post this one up as I'm fairly unknowledgeable when it comes to French coins so any more info would be great. I've found out its 20 Francs, .900 or 21ct , 6.45 grams, Louis XVIII Bust / Crowned Shield in Wreath and in good condition inclined to say EF what do you lot think? Here's the pics Also got a interesting 1746 LIMA but thats for another post.

Thanks for the tips Peter, I won't worry so much about the latest edition in that case.
-
Yeah I must admit I'm quite fond of this one. Thanks for the suggestion Chris. I've seen the 1801-1900 for £22.68+ £2.80 delivery and the 1901-2000 for £28.84 + £2.80 delivery on amazon(need to confirm they're the latest editions) I'm guessing I won't find them cheaper elsewhere or will I?

AJWcoins replied to scott's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
So were there many standard 2010 50p's as yet I'm still to find one in my change got a few olympic 2011 one's but still no 2010 standard 50p. -
Well I've managed to find out it's got the Paris mint mark which is the A at 5 O'Clock on the reverse. Which is a shame as if it were a L it would be scarce and minted at the Bayonne mint. I found this info over at coinwiki.

Giving up collecting
AJWcoins replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Azda it would be a shame to see you go, surely its a step too far to turn your back on something which your obviously passionate about. Obviously what you have discovered is frustrating and understandably so its not right, but like has been said already you can warn potential buyers. How about just taking a break from buying any coins for a while and monitor the situation I can picture you regretting selling off your coins. Would be such a shame to lose you from the forums. -
Gold plated 1910 penny slabbed by CGS !
AJWcoins posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Just been looking on eBay and come accross this item: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1910-UNC-LUSTRE-GOLDPLATED-EDWARD-VII-PENNY-CGS-UK-/270772443969?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item3f0b4b9b41 So whats up here surely CGS wouldn't contemplate grading and slabbing a coin which has been electroplated (and probably cleaned before that!)? I'm going to email the seller see if I can get the UIN out of him. -
Ebay regular scam/unknowledgeable listings

Ouch, £46 is quite a result considering the origins of said coin. So how many times have you seen that one on eBay? -

AJWcoins replied to AJWcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Pun intended or not. Either way, that deserves an apology. You've lost me there Rob, did I offend you? Of course not. Without grading, it's pointless whether you are using the Sheldon scale or CGS' 0-100. Geddit...........Don't worry, I'll stop now. Ah I see No pun intended kind of wish it was though. -

...... or slab any 1910 1d that was identifiable as ok without needing an alternative opinion. Going off on a slight tangent, in the States I have noticed that big names or seriously large bulk submissions (such as whole collections for auction) appear to have more favourable treatment when the grading is done. Given that every business on the planet treats it biggest customers more favourably than a casual user of the service, I would be gobsmacked if this didn't also apply to CGS. Interesting tangent there Rob, its not something that had crossed my mind but its sound reasoning quite worrying really.
