Image quality is fantastic, I would love to buy one but the missus would have different ideas Also a little worried about legislation banning where you can fly them as recently there have been a number of storied in the press about inapropriate use. One pilot reporting a near miss with a drone as he was comming into land at an airport.
  3. I dont think they are coins as there is no obvious denomination. Maybe the start of a new collection, middle eastern bus tokens?

    Proof sets 2000 - 2007

I know modern issues are not everybody's cup of tea, but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I’m trying to find out what the original Royal Mint issue prices were for the standard /collector proof sets for 2000 to 2007. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    Die varieties and combinations

I have been reading up on some die varieties and combinations and I’m wondering if there is a recognised way of recording these. I have seen some references that record obverse varieties as capital letters A, B, C etc. with reverse dies recorded with lower case letters a, b, c etc. giving combinations a structure of A-a, A-b, B-b etc. Others use letters for the obverse & numbers for the reverse die varieties, resulting in combinations of A-1, A- 2, B-2 etc. Is there a right way of doing this, or does anything go? Or is one system from the UK and the other wrong from the US?

Thanks Rob I found some prices from my Coin News back issues, but unfortunately my subscription doesn't go back far enough for these dates.

    Proof sets 2000 - 2007

I agree Peter, but not half as much as more recent sets. Thanks Dave, I'm trying to find the original RM prices for an article I'm writing for my local numismatic societies newsletter, but I have drawn a blank for these year so far.

Evening all , advise needed before I get ripped off

You could try taking them to the Stamp and Coin Fair at York Rasecourse this Friday and Saturday. There will be plenty of dealers willing to give you their opinion after being able to see the coins in hand.

    London Olympics 50ps

Still available from the mint @ £89.50 or £2.99 each A silly price but most things from the Mint are these days.

    engraved coins

I've maybe seen that before, but what a gem! Is that yours Derek? No, it was sold on e-bay a few years back, I did bid for it but unsurprisingly it went out of reach. Another one which got away was a 1940 penny re-cut with a swastika instead of the union jack. Someone with a time viewer that could look 70 years ahead. I believe the swastika was a good luck symbol before it was adopted by the Nazis. I seem to remember it being used by the National Savings Bank pre war.
  15. With cycling being one of the more popular sports & one we have a chance of winning medals in, I would have thought the mintage would be higher not lower than the others. Or is it like when I was a kid collecting football cards, you never found the best players.

mint mishaps and sort after decimal coins

At 7,000,000 the 1988 pound has the lowest mintage of any £1 coin released for circulation, until the 2008 (old design). Also pre the bridge series it was the only reverse never to be reused. Making it look more scarce than others in your pocket. Although they are out there circulating examples are now showing their age now. In my experience the 2008 2p (old design with the Prince of Wales feathers) is the hardest coin to find in circulation. Ian..
  17. There are a plethora of fake £1 coins. You'll have no difficulty locating them in your change if you keep a sharp lookout. I can't imagine many fakes of lower denomination values as it would hardly be worth the effort, their value is so low. Although as stated earlier, there are some pre 1997 fake 50p's about. Haven't yet spotted a fake £2 coin. No doubt the bi metallic is difficult to fake. Not if the mint is stupid enough to scrap them by popping the middle out, then transporting the 2 parts together for melting down. http://www.thelocal.de/national/20110331-34083.html

    Coin Collectors Map GB

Hi Sion, I’m fairly sure Corbitts no longer have a shop in Collingwood Street and only trade from Mosley Street. There is another small dealer in Newcastle: Intercoin 103 Clayton Street Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5PZ The only other dealer I know in the North East is: Coinote 74 Elwick Road Hartlepool England TS26 9AP

    Coin Collectors Map GB

Yes, when I have time I'll start putting in some major coin shops. I pinpointed most of them on the map using the sattelite and street view but some I couldn't quite find. I did Tyneside by the postcode on the site, and it pinpointed a certain house. I selected the option to go into street view on the postcode but couldn't find a RAFA club and checked the street to the north, which was just houses. So I called the club by it's postcode and didn't pinpoint it. However I've now tried the other street and after finding google maps isn't quite synchronised with Street View, tagged the building with the windowless roof which is the RAFA club. However, it's only a rough guide and I suggest if one wants to visit one of the clubs they should visit the website or phone the secretary before following the map. In most cases the directions are exact. I hope you didn’t take my comments as a criticism, it was not intended that way. You’re spot on target now, the only way you could be more accurate is if you moved the arrow to hover over the bay window on the left which happens to be the room we use. When you think about it, It’s actually quite useful that big brother is watching. Do you want people to let you know of dealers in their area? & if so what is the best way so you can pinpoint them?

    coin collectors by area

I would recommend joining a club if you have one local to you. I joined my local club when I started collecting a few years ago & have learned more by talking to other members than I could ever of hoped to learn from books.

This is a great idea. I’m a member of the Tyneside Numismatic Society which you have included, thanks. Not sure why Google maps think we meet in the back lane, maybe they think we need the space to exercise our whippets? One thing I have always thought would be useful is a map of coin dealers who have shops or antique shops worth a numismatic visit. Whilst traveling round Britain, or Europe for that matter, I wonder how many shops I have missed, by only a few streets.
  22. I know Edward VI produced the first dated English coins, dated MDXLVIII (1548) I have found references to Shillings and Half Sovereigns and have found images of these coins on the British Museums Website. However I have found one reference to there being a 1548 Sovereign, can anyone confirm this coin exists? And are there any other denominations dated 1548? Many thanks in anticipation of your help.

    Earliest dated coins

Thanks for the info guys. I'll hunt out a copy of coin year book and research Durham House and there is plenty to go through on that auction link. I can see asking a simple question on here is not going to generate many simple answers Thanks again.

Thanks. Looks like the reference to a Sovereign was bogus.
