    Buying Sovereigns

If buying for bullion value you only need to worry about the coin being genuine and the correct weight. If buying for numismatic reasons you need to look out for damage and wear as well as the above. You can buy nice older sovereigns for around the bullion price, but they may be a bit worn. You can often find some nice George the V 1911-1932 Sovereigns in Uncirculated or close enough grade for near bullion. You really need to search around. Personally I would rather own an older one to a newer one. Chris's book Collectors Coins GB 2009 would also be a good buy as its very well priced and it will give you the value of Sovereigns for their grade. A word of warning though, don't listen to the grades given buy some sellers as they tend to overgrade their coins and you don't want to spend over the ods. I would look at buying from reputable dealers to start with, until you are more confident at grading. You could check out my website below in my signature it has a section on grading and Chris has just released a book on grading. Regards, Hus

  5. You can now list in different currencies including the US Dollar: http://www.coins4u.net/detail.asp?id=147 http://www.coins4u.net/detail.asp?id=146 The GBP you see is only the rough conversion as the site's primary currency is the GBP. The bidders however can only bid using multiples of the currency stated by the seller. Thanks, Hus
  6. As an upadate also notice a couple other flaws with the 'normal coin' There are a few blobs on the grilled part of the design another scratch off the Fur elise and one of the holes along the bottom in the middle near the MD signature opposite the other Twenty error line has not been punched properly and is filled in. Could this be a new previously unreported flaw?: Regards Russ777 No responses yet so I guess people are still looking for the Mule 20p thoughts on this please I am looking to sell?? Might do an ebay.... how common could this be and out of interest how might it occur??? I haven't seen enough of them to really comment or say how rare they might be, but the new 20p's are turning out to be quite interesting. I'm still keeping my eye out for one in the change. Hus

    Buying Coins

I agree with Rob and Chris's answers. As for coin fairs, I have the same trouble living just over the Border in Scotland. I have resulted to going to antique fairs instead. If I am lucky I may find one table with coins for sale.

    error coins

Sorry, but I agree. That has been done on a machine after it was minted.
  14. I don't know much about these at all, but it looks nice. Great find!

    error coins

Any pictures? If only one side is blank, my first guess would be that it was post mint damage. Does it look like it's been filed or sanded down?
  16. Good point I hadn't noticed the star. To be honest I don't know. I don't really collect ancients although I do have a couple of Byzantine Solidus coins. Maybe someone else will know more?
  17. Link to Wildwinds: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/honorius/i.html It looks very much like RIC 1206 Honorius AV Solidus. Milan mint. Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right / Honorius standing right, holding standard and Victory on globe, captive at foot. RIC IX 35c. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/honorius/RIC_1206.jpg but I think its RIC 1206d Honorius AV Solidus. Mediolanum mint. Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right / Emperor standing right, holding standard and Victory on globe, captive at foot; M-D/COMOB. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/honorius/RIC_1206d.5.jpg The C of COMOB is further away from the O Hus

    Spotting dipped coins

These sort of things: http://coins.shop.ebay.com/items/Coins-Pap...idZm270Q2el1313 I could be wrong but I think the German manufacturer Lighthouse does a similar silver coin dip? but I have never tried any of them, and don't plan to either.

    Great find!

I was helping my father in law sort through some of his Canadian coins using a book which he recently bough out of a second hand book shop whilst on holiday. The book is Coins of Canada by J.A. Haxby and R. C. Willey. 2nd edition. Anyway, he has a few 1859 one cents. Most appear to be the early form of the narrow 9 (common one). One however looked to be "Double punched narrow 9 no.1" it has a small tail to the bottom left of the of the 9.
  21. Well they are added to my "if ever I win the lottery" list. To be honest I like most if not all the coins I now have in my collection, especially my world gold collection. I am enjoying collecting world gold coins as the only criteria I have set myself is that I have to like the look of the coin before I buy it. Not collecting a specific country, date run or a type allows me a lot of freedom and means I can "cherry pick" the coins I want to add to my collection. On the more strict collecting side I am trying to build a complete set of 1/3 farthings and then possibly move onto the other fractionals as well.
  22. Hard to choose one. The Victorian Gothic Crown would be up there, and If money was no object: Petition Crown Una and the lion Triple Unite Probably more, but they were the first to spring to my mind.

    Spotting dipped coins

Some US collectors prefer their coins dipped. In fact dipped used to be the sought after commodity. Now the fashion seems to be for wild rainbow coloured coins. Some people say dipping is cleaning, so it should reduce the price of the coins, but apart from guessing that a coin has been dipped, ie too nice looking with no sign of toning it is quite hard to prove, especially in UNC grade. Some coins where stored in airtight boxes or containers after they were minted and show no signs of toning, and full lustre. If you look on ebay your bound to see a lot of Morgan dollars which have with litlle doubt been dipped (ie "blast white"). If however a coin is dipped too many times it will loose its lustre and look cleaned (which means it will loose its value). If a coin isn't UNC and DOES shows wear yet it looks like the day it was minted with no toning, then this should throw up warning flags. This would indicate to me that said coin has been dipped or cleaned.
