Do you think this guy's any good at polishing shoes as well? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1935-CROWN-GEORGE-V-SILVER-COIN-/320688879068?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item4aaa8bf5dc

Great advice by all, which I totally agree with. I've been collecting since I was about 8 and I'm 32 know. I've bought from dealers and ebay and dabbled at selling on ebay for several years. I mostly sold coins that didn't fit into my collection any more or ones I had upgraded. Lately I have started dealing part time. To be honest sometimes I wish I had more money to but stock but I haven't been taking a wage from this business (I still work full time). Instead any profits are used to by more coins for my stock. That way in a few years my inventory will grow to a nice size with hopefully many choice and eye appealing coins. I would love to deal coins full time but as others have pointed out it's not an easy thing to do. As others have pointed out, knowledge is key and take your time. You are still young enjoy the hobby, collect and learn first. As to buying on ebay, I have written a guide on my website which you might find useful: http://www.coinsgb.com/Buying_Coins_On_Ebay.html One last thing to add... If you have any questions just ask, there are many experianced members on this forum with decades of specialised knowledge only to happy to help.

Lamination 1965 Halfpenny
Hussulo replied to Gary's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Lamination is usually due to a poor mix in the metal. It can happen to solid metal coins and not necessary only to plated coins. -
He did! Thats a classic comedy. It was - and full of shapely young starlets of the day bursting out of their mini-togas Very true Isn't it funny that what society deems is an attractive shape changes through the century's? At the time of the Indus valley a full shaped lady was admired. At the time of the Renaissance a lady would be admired if she had an hour glass shape. Today it tends to be more the slimmer shapes of your Cheryl Cole's and Victoria Beckham that everyone strives for.

no time wasters please Regarding the other listing. It does annoy me when I see post mint, damaged coins being advertised as errors.

Welcome to the forum Uncle Phil. Along with all the excellent advise you have been given, if you are going to build a coin cabinet, make sure you build it using mahogany. This is the most stable type of wood to use for coins. Take a look here for ideas: http://www.coincabinets.com/

Unusual 2009 Two Pound Coin
Hussulo replied to Marc's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I bid about £34 for it. If I won I would have probably offered it for around £50 on my website, which it went for. If I had bid on it for myself I would have put in a bid of £50-60. A nice coin and worth the price in my opinion. Not one you will find everyday in your change. -
I'm just home. It had a blue stain dipped it in acetone which removed it (must have been PVC residue). Here's the pictures: I don't own a Davies but have ordered one from Rob. Any opinions of variety?

Sellers picture: http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages/showimage.aspx?gid=218798&ppid=1122ℑ=395928174&images=395928182,395928174&formats=0,0&format=0 In my defence it was getting late when I bid on it last night. It also appears to have some blue? staining. Possibly PVC residue. I'll need to give it a dip in acetone when it arrives.

The sellers image isn't very clear. I've just enlarged the area and it now appears as if it isn't the rarer variety. Oh well

I've seen I think 3 on ebay, one I bought and resold in about F for £30. A second was again about fine that was on for a Buy it Now for £25 and unidentified, I thought about it for a while but it sold after a couple of weeks. I wasn't convince that I'd make any money on it as varities often are not very hot on ebay. My GVF I paid £120 at London Coins Dublin austion about 4-5 years ago. Thanks Gary, I think I have one but I'll need to see it in hand when it arrives. I'll upload pics once I get it.

Pretty scary Having only looked at the reverse images, the only slight possible differences I can see: 1- The dots in the Colon are smaller on the left coin 2- The dot at and one to the left of L in Half are slightly oblonf on the left coin. 3- The dot just touches the garter on the left coin where it appears to be slightly over the garter on the right coin. These differences might be down to lighting etc and you cannot say for certain looking at images. -
Double dot 1819 Crown
Hussulo replied to Benny who's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
There does seem to be doubling of the letters but the letters aren't doubled or spaced uniformly as one might expect if it was a double struck coin. I believe that the doubling of the letters MAY be the letters being re-cut into the die. However I would also be interested to hear other members thoughts? -
Double dot 1819 Crown
Hussulo replied to Benny who's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Interestingly neither of the dots look uniform. I think the second dot might be a small chip in the die, which would be incuse and when the coin has been struck appears as a dot. If it was double struck I would expect the letters nearby to be double struck as well and I can't think of any reason for someone to incorporate the second dot in the design as if they had why would they put it in that position? you would expect it to be directly to one side of the original dot ie like a colon. Still if it is a chip on the die you would expect more then one coin to have been produced and if you can get it noted as a variety and a sought after type you could be onto a winner. -

How Good Can They Really Be?
Hussulo replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I agree, taking accurate and nice images of coins is a nightmare and I'm also still struggling with it. This website is worth a read for some tips: http://coinimaging.com/ Mark Goodman also has a coin imaging book out. You can read my review here: http://www.coinsgb.com/Book_And_Product_Reviews/Numismatic_Photography.html -

I just noticed Benny's reply about NGC detailed grades. I would go with them for slabbing if you really want it slabbed, but again: If Chris authenticates it for you, I don't see the reason for slabbing it unless you want to sell it on ebay. If you are going to sell it, you are better to sell it raw at one of the London auction houses. -

Probably wise to check out PCGS's stance on cleaned items ? PCGS will body bag it, ie put it in a clear flip and not a slab and give you a label stating it had been cleaned. NGC might put it in a slab, state what it is and don't mention it being cleaned. ANACS will slab it and give it a grade as well as mentioning it has been cleaned. If Chris authenticates it for you, I don't see the reason for slabbing it unless you want to sell it on ebay. If you are going to sell it, you are better to sell it raw at one of the London auction houses. -
How much literature do members have and use?
Hussulo replied to Rob's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi Rob, I agree yo have your work cut out for you but it would be a great book to release and being the same size as Peck I would expect you would need to release it as an addition, even if you did re-release a modern copy of Peck. I would personally prefer it in hardback. It depends how much of the market you want to cater for but to me it sounds like it will be quite an in depth book which probably cater more for the experienced collector who might not be as concerned about the price. Current copies of Peck seem to sell fast even at £100+. It would be great if you could produce as much detailed information as possible, and then readers could refer to the parts that interests them most. To be honest I don't think you can ever have too much information. I'm sure you probably have all your bases covered but if I can offer any help in anyway (possibly even financial backing) please ask. Regards, Hus -
