Royal Mint News
Emperor Oli replied to Geoff T's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Going back to the monarchs bit, I learnt a rhyme a few months ago to remember all post-Norman conquest monarchs: Willy Willy Harry Ste, Harry Dick John Harry III (say "three") One two three Neds Richard II (say "two"), Harrys IV V VI (four five six) then who? Edwards IV V (four five) Dick the Bad, Harrys twain and Ned the Lad, Mary Bessie James the Vain, Charlie Charlie James again, William and Mary Anne gloria, Four Georges William and Victoria The rhyme does go on from there but it's pretty simple to remember them. -
A Rotographic database league table!
Emperor Oli replied to Chris Perkins's topic in Rotographic Publications Forum
Yep, I was in Paris since Monday using Toytown money. We stayed in the Marignan-Elysees which is about 100m off the Avenue des Champs-Elysees. It was very nice and we did all the usual stuff (Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre). We also did the Musee d'Orsay which has quite a few Impressionist paintings and lots of objets d'art, especially a bust called "Baronne" or something like that by Rodin which especially caught my eye. Also, we went to see a show called Bonheur at the Lido on the Champs-Elysees which was spectacular and full of half naked women which can't be bad! My feet are dead from all the walking about through gardens and galleries too. Ermmm that's about it actually - ooh, and only one surly Frenchman encountered! -
I'm that predictable!? I like it, however, I would like it better if the Union flag could be faded somewhat so it's doesn't box the florin in too much. By the by, Barclays have closed down the BNP's accounts citing a conflict of interests or something - Nick Griffin was reported to have said it is a fundamental human right to have a bank account

I don't think there's anyway to remove verdigris except scraping it off which obviously is not the brightest thing to do. Otherwise, I'm afraid you're stuck with green coins!
-
I must have missed that, sorry chaps.
-
I don't like the slanted writing or the "oins" and "ollectors" being so far away from their respective Cs. To open another can of worms, nobody's thought about the back cover

Fred. Duke of York
Emperor Oli replied to Bob's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Nope, Geoff is right. It came about from the brief invasion of Flanders by Frederick Augustus, Duke of Yorkand Commander-in-Chief of the British army during the Napoleonic Wars. He won a victory but then was defeated and returned to England hence "He marched them up to thetop of the hill, and he marched them down again". -
My glorious Mum today set aside a coin she got in her change. I got home from school and she said she had something for me and she opened her purse and pulled out the 2004 Entente Cordiale £5 piece! I was gobsmacked as I have never ever seen a £5 in my change, let alone in circulation. I'd grade it as uncirculated with only a few bagmarks and inconsequential dints. I'm extremely happy as I think that it's one of the nicest "normal" (ie not Britannia) issues that the Mint has struck for quite a while. Edit: Before anyone asks, I have realised that there isn't a question mark in the title

Coin storage
Emperor Oli replied to Half Penny Jon's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It doesn't stop it althogether, you know -
I've got a lovely George II sixpence that she liked the look of - can't blame her!
-
Good idea! I only showed her the book to show her other recent £5 coins. She likes some of the older stuff I've got, pre-George III - quite an expensive taste!
-
The good ol' Post Office
-
Not at all! She asked me how much it might be worth and I said around a fiver and poked around in Spinks to show her some more. Then I told her that there would be a proof variety, piedfort silver, gold etc bywhich time she had switched off!
-
Now what do you think of this idea?
Emperor Oli replied to Chris Perkins's topic in Rotographic Publications Forum
No. If you want to make a Rotographic forum, make it a sub-forum on here (eg. Nothing to do with coins area). By making it the Rotographic forum, it gives the idea that one could only talk about the books in it. The forum seems to be functioning as it is and if any Rotographic readers want to ask some questions, they could do if you created a sub-forum as I suggested earlier. Alternatively, you could call it the Predecimal and Rotographic forum although that's a bit of a mouthful. -
How about white on black? I'm sure the silver coins previously submitted would look super on it. Also, try having the florin as the centrepiece and the "Collector's Coins" in an arc over the top and "2005 Edition Fully Revised" in an arc below it. I tried to do that earlier but my DTP programs are a bit iffy at the moment.

To Edward's point about not doing certain colours because they are opposite each otheron the colour wheel, this is wrong. You should use two colours which are opposite as they complement each other, hence the name complementary colours. That's why we have the traditional red and green at Christmas. Have a gander at this if I'm not explaining it well. I like Sylveter's idea about using black because it is a colour that matches anything. However, what would look really good would be white text (or pink!) on a black background with some pics of silver coins dotted around. But then we hit the price barrier again.
-
I heard they did a report that said it's yellow, that's why New York city taxis are that colour
-
It may just be me, but I think the shadowing makes it look a bit cheap and tawdry. I don't really know how you could make it appealing without inflating the price somewhat, which is one thing thet Chris is trying not to do. I think simplicity is the key here, perhaps a little more embellished than the current number but along the same lines. Also, I like how Spink totally changes the design - it gives a nice variety.
-
I think it's rather convincing, actually. I looks to be a painted half crown which could have been done to attempt to pass it off as something of a higher denomination. I don't think it's a counterfeit in the way that Sylvester is saying, where he seems to think that it's been struck from die made by the counterfeiter (correct me if I'm wrong), I think that it's a half crown taken out of circulation and painted or gilded to try to use as perhaps a half-sovereign.

A very Happy Birthday to Geoff
Emperor Oli replied to Chris Perkins's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Hip hip hooray! Happy birthday, Geoff, hope you spend it well! -
The diameter for your 1797 coin, which we think is a cartwheel issue, will be either about 41mm for a twopence or about 36mm for a penny.
-
Exactly what I'm doing minus the Cartwheel! It should be finished soon and it won't be that spectacualr owing to the brief from Chris! Edit: No, it's totally crap so I won't even bother submitting it
-
I'll photoshop something later - I have a few ideas but I don't know whether they would look right on a coin book!

Latest ammended pages.

Page 2: "For use in Ceylon originally" would sound better as "Originally for use in Ceylon" in my opinion. Page 5: "1858 (noted 1998) 'BU Full Lustre, exceptIonal'" Page 7: Near the bottom it says "From 1897 to 1917 all farthings...." then on page 8 at the start it says "All chemically darkened to avoid confusion with half sovereigns". Surely this only needs to be said once? Page 9: 1945 mintage figure has a space in between 7 and 36 (to make 23,7 36,000) Page 10: 1841 Halfpenny with alignment variety. Could the up and down arrows be the same instead of an actual arrow (^) and a V? Also, there is no space between "shield" and "£2" for the 1851 halfpenny but I don't thing this can be avoided. Pages 11: Could both 1858 "last x over x" be capitalised, as the rest are? Page 12: The footnote about the 1883 variety says "Queens" instead of "Queen's". Page 14: According to my maths coursework, "Guesstimate" is spelt "Guestimate" but I spell it the former Page 15: Could the values for 1953-8 be aligned so they are in a column, not as they are now? Also, the 1967 says 'BU' with both apostrophes facing the same way, instead of both facing in (nice bit about predecimal btw!). Page 22: Part about the 1933 pattern says "i'd" instead of "I'd". Aha, you have also spelt Guestimate here differently to the other, this time the way my coursework says it! Also, the 1944 says "not darkened" when it should be capitalised. And in the bottom-right text box, what is a "sightling"? Page 23: Caption for George VI penny finishes with two full-stops (unless this is meant to lead onto the next picutre, then I would plump for three). Guesstimate spelt differently for 1954 as well. About the Three halfpence, you say they bear the name "Britanniar". I don't know whether this is a typo or whether they actually do. Page 25: The paragraph about the "Late George III, all George IV etc." has "Threepence" capitalised in the second line when it isn't further on. And you've recapitalised it in the William IV part below that. Ceremony in "Maundy ceromony" wrong. Phew I'm all worn out now! Good work, Chris! -
What would be your dream coin?
