What would be your dream coin?
Emperor Oli replied to Master Jmd's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Someone did this a while ago it went something like "If you had £X, what would you buy?" Edit: Plus this is the "Nothing to do with coins area" -
The inscriptions on £1 coins
Emperor Oli replied to Master Jmd's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
If you can be bothered to rotate all £1 minted to exactly the same orientation so the inscriptions all line up, then I will take my hat off to you. It is a waste of time and resources to have all the inscriptions the same way around. It's not idleness, it simply cannot be done on the scale of the production. -
^^ It looks as-struck!

Peck for Sale
Emperor Oli replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I was wondering if that was how you spelt it! If I had bought it, I suppose that I could have sold it again cause they're quite sought after, aren't they? -
Peck for Sale
Emperor Oli replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Not really much use to me now, although I would have bought it had I not got verdi gris. If have a nice medal (coronations, jubilees etc) book, I'll take that off your hands! -
I was thinking Helvetica but then it occurred to me that I may be getting mixed up with the font! Ah yes "Switzerland is also known as Confoederatio Helvetica"

The "woman holding a spear" is, as I think was remarked a while ago, their Britannia. Like we used Britannia to symbolise Britain on circulation coins, they use her - Helvetia I think is her name or that might be Switzerland.

I got confused by the "hoveres" bit and I've never heard of ultrasound cleaners. Edit: Ultrasound hoovers I meant to say
-
^^ Can you explain that - I'm probably being dense but I don't understand it

Tim Henman's out of wimbledon...
Emperor Oli replied to Master Jmd's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Hardly surprising, is it? He's just not Wimbledon-winning calibre, compared to some others like Federer or Mauresmo. Bookies are even taking bets on Henman's daughter winning it before him, with better odds! -
I know watch makers, especially those of pocket watches, use ultrasound to clean and dislodge dirt caught in flywheels etc. but I've never thought of using it for coins.

It is a gaming token and worth very little. There are hundreds on Ebay....

There is hardly any British coin news so the forum would be dead. As for the point about the morale (sic.) up, I never noticed it was low!

coin sets, how do you get info on them?
Emperor Oli replied to samantha pia's topic in Beginners area
I'm 15 and my birthday is on the Ides of March. -
Congrats, Chris. I look forward with anticipation to hearing the broadcast, if you get it. Also, well done on the BNS - do you get that gorgeous centenary medal as a membership perk?

coin sets, how do you get info on them?
Emperor Oli replied to samantha pia's topic in Beginners area
Subtlety, but I'm making three pop-up models for my Graphics project so I'm not that bothered at the minute! -

Whats rarer?
Emperor Oli replied to Master Jmd's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Isn't a VIP proof what it implies - a coin specially struck to present to important people, like the Royal family or dignitaries? -
Oh. That's the problem with the internet compared to normal speech.
-
Err what? Compared to the value of a normal QV sovereign it's damn expensive!

Emperor Oli replied to Chris Perkins's topic in Rotographic Publications Forum
It's doubtful that Chris would have pressed shift and the slash button at the same time. -

The "?" is most probably because nobody knows the exact mintage, pretty straightforward -
Unless you could get a vacuum pump to somehow suck the air out or find a chemical to turn oxygen into something relatively inert like xenon, then no.

I think it's nigh-on impossible to remove verdi gris from coins but if anyone knows, please share! i've tried soaking one of mine (19sixtysomething 3d) in nail polish remover (acetone) but it doesn't seem to lift it.

Oh no, I didn't interpret it like that at all. If people can spot verdi gris early, that's good. I reckon that it's starting on the right wing of the eagle and above it in the dip created by the wing.
