  1. I thought JMD's figure of over a billion was a bit inflated! I've now got two after a bit of searching, both B+B.

    What should i buy?

So you don't have a cabinet therefore your point about you being able to store coins easily was false. Nice going
  3. Emperor Oli

    What should i buy?

    ...so you have a cabinet?

    What should i buy?

Ha! Scared of the competition- don't make me laugh. I can do all the things which you say so I don't see what you're getting at. A cabinet is just as easy to store coins as whatever you use, if not better. Whatever you're trying to make this into, I'm not following it.

    What should i buy?

Ring up for divorce with penny, both hire solicitors. Have long drawn-out three year battle for custody of the fractional farthings. Penny obviously gets them as she is the woman and we all know women are looked favourably on in custody battles. However, Penny is quite poor in comparison to JMD so she would have to find lots of money to buy him out of their marital cabinet. Drawing on money from her grandfather, the shilling, she manages to scrape together enough, with some endowments whuch she has lying around, to buy JMD out. JMD goes off to buy scummy folder somewhere whilst Penny and the fractionals live in their nice mahogany cabinet. Moral of the story? I don't know. p.s Farthing's mine! edit oops im talking about houses instead of cabinets
  6. Your post inspired me to rifle through my bag of 10ps and sure enough, out of about twelve coins, I found one in VF condition. They don't seem to be as rare as everyone is making them out to be!

    What should i buy?

    Apparently so
  8. This is an issue commemorating the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II. It shows the Queen herself on horseback with the usual, but extended legend around the outside. On the reverse it has four shields each with the national emblem of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which form a cross with a crown in the middle. It also has their national "plant" - the rose, the shamrock, the leek and the thistle. Lots of these were minted, as with all commemorative pieces, but this one is worth more than some of the later issues. You say it is pretty dirty - if it is just surface dirt like mud etc, just run it under the tap for a few seconds, but don't use any cloths. This should take most of the dirt off it. However, if it is dirty, it can't be in that good a condition. If we grade it at about VF (very fine), I would place the value at about £2. There are some also with an edge inscription error. If the inscription reads "*AND TRUST***UNTO YO" (no 'u'), then it will be worth around £20. The asterisks are meant to represent the dots found on the actual coin. If you care to register and upload a picture, I can be more precise but if you don't, I hope this helps.

    what do 'berries' mean?

It's the wreath on the effigy, how many berries and leaves it has in it. It's one of the distinguishing features of the victorian obverses.
  10. Yeah Michael Jackson's good, if not for his songs then for his videos! My favourite Madonna song is "Material Girl" cause it's just good Oops she's called Esther now isn't she
  11. Emperor Oli

    What should i buy?

    Not in the same grade.
  12. Emperor Oli

    What should i buy?

Not if I buy it first mwahahaha those are two gaps in my collection!
  13. My Mum would string you up for Cher's Walking in Memphis. Apparently she "butchered" it and the original Marc Cohn version is superior. Gypsies btw or gyppos whatever you prefer
  14. Emperor Oli

    What should i buy?

I'd probably have to flog a substantial part of my collection for a full date set (highest-lowest denominations) in a reasonable condition. Out of interest, what was the benchmark grade of your 1887, or any other date set?
  15. Emperor Oli

    What should i buy?

I was inspired by your 1887 set that it's convinced me to start on year sets when I'm done with farthings! I think I'll be stopping at the 20th century and may perhaps jump to some short-reign monarchs.
  16. The Clash!!! I bought their "London Calling" CD a few weeks ago and it's great! My favourite songs are London Calling (obviously), Jimmy Jazz and Rudie can't fail
  17. Emperor Oli

    What should i buy?

huh I thought you were doing Victorian.
  18. I'd not really class music as an era, I'd go for a genre instead. But I digress. I'd go for modern and 80s punk rock. Swing and Jazz from the inter-war years is also quite good. How the 70s and 80s are "Golden Oldies" is beyond me - they were only thirty years ago!
  19. No idea. Less than all the others.
  20. Like all other numismatic rarities, it's down to mintage. All the others were minted more than 2+A.

    Just a little Hello

Oh I thought that was the most sensible of themall. We have had coins made of other things than metal, as the replier said, glass and shells were used.
  22. Emperor Oli

    Just a little Hello

Agreed! I've been browsing the Royal Mint forums and there is this unimaginably annoying Oriental man, or a pair of them, I haven't quite worked it out yet, who ask the most ridiculous of questions e.g Why not coins made of anything other than metal Where all mints of all coins ever produced What is the final mintage of all coins ever produc Hmph the idiocy.
  23. Emperor Oli

    Just a little Hello

Steady on Jon! We're the best for British but we don't have near as enough expertise on American coinage as some other sites out there Welcome Mr Simian, I'm Oliver and I collect farthings. Happy collecting!
  24. Emperor Oli

    Farthing hoard.

Book price and a bit more, as usual.
  25. I used Chris' grading as the cornerstone of my knowledge when I started out and found it very helpful! I find Wybrit's useful, but for a different reason. I like it because he explains in lots of detail, where to look for abrasions etc.
