C. Cooke's Farthings to be sold
Emperor Oli posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
In March's Coin News, there is a full-page advertisement on page five announcing the sale of the complete Farthing collection of the late Colin Cooke. Apparently there are over 1700 different specimens, which Coin News elaborates on on page 10. I've photographed both things below. -
C. Cooke's Farthings to be sold

..and? We need pictures! -
In Britain, our Chancellor of the Exchequer devised five economic tests to assess the impact that the Euro would have on the UK. They include things about interest rates, growth, jobs, and flexibility. Basically, they would be very hard to fulfill, especially having the ECB setting interest rates for Britain. The rejection of the EU consitution in a raft of EU countries also suggests a growing disillusionment with the EU as a whole. It seems unlikely to me that this Labour government would care to pursue such a matter considering the state it is in now.

Possible, but highly unlikely.

eBay seems to be getting quicker at removing them, which can only be good news.

Congrats Andy (and Neelam)

I PMed him yesterday but didn't get a reply - I imagine he's somewhat busy! -
Very Sad :(

Holy cow, have you ever driven in Russia? What with dodging potholes, other drivers, lorries all over etc, that is too risky a venture for me. Our road was potholed to hell until this morning when it was resurfaced. Sorry, "redressed", that is they pour a thin layer of bitumen over the top and roll in stone chippings. Cheaper way of doing it I suppose! -
I don't think the counterfeits you hypothesise about have been manufacatured. The listings from Taiwan rip the information and images from other legitimate sellers. However, if they were to exist I imagine they would be fairly easy to spot compared to the real deal. I think they would probably be cast rather than struck, making the details less defined. Some Chinese counterfeits also make terrible slip-ups, such as the Silver Jubilee Crowns struck with the date 1877.

Is the market out of control?
Emperor Oli replied to Rob's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I've seen the term "condition rarity" bandied about by Americans, instead of just the usual sort of rarity where there are few pieces. -
Grading evaluation
Emperor Oli replied to Hussulo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I concur. Has the second been polished with something as well, or is that just the natural colour? It looks a bit off, but it could be the angle. -
Looks EF to me, I think the wear on Britannia's shield, bust, and lower leg prevent it from going higher.
-
If you think this is bad, the Americans have a TV channel called "Shop at Home TV" which is a home shopping channel that devotes a portion of its schedule to selling coins. If you click coins at the bottom of this page you'll see what I'm talking about if you have even the slightest knowledge of US coins.

I haven't got the book but thought about ordering the newer version. The price seems a bit steep, but I suppose when one compares it with Peck it's a bargain.

Welcome!

I don't really know, as I don't collect sovereigns! Why would they want to distinguish the sovereigns, couldn't they just use normal ones?

While the cat's away, the mice will...remain utterly obedient!
-
I've no idea. Perhaps someone who collects gold will be able to enlighten you! The Chard site doesn't seem to have anything on it, nor does any other gold dealer.
-
I've got the Bill of Rights, Bank of England, and the Victoria 2001 £5. The thing is, they are all in the Mint packaging so photography might be a tad difficult.

Is it worth slabbing a valuable coin?
Emperor Oli replied to hactonhouse's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I totally agree with Rob's post. Also if you decided against slabbing, you could use the fees that you would have paid to buy a good digital camera. -
I use Photoshop CS2 which has a nifty canvas resize feature, to resize the background layer of a picture without distorting its contents. CS2 is pricey, but you can buy Photoshop Elements which has many of the features of the full CS2 version.

Happy Birthday to Jon...

I had two maths papers and the general studies this afternoon. General Studies was sooo easy I don't know how people can fail it; multiple choice on maths and science, how easy can it get? -
I always click "Today's Active Topic" at the bottom. Perhaps not as direct, but it saves delving into the individual forums.

When I logged on yesterday I was taken aback, but nobody else posted anything so I thought I was the only one!

It's a guy on the CU Forums . It was a 10 cents listing day, so whatever price it starts at he only paid 10 cents instead of the usual percentage.
