    Fake!

I agree but........if one buys the reproductions, they normally have the makers mark on them, whether stamped or engraved. I wish they found another method of showing it was a repro than that but I can't think of one off the top of my head.

    I've been pruning!

Finally! Now the member list is actually navigable (is that a word? i mean that one can navigate through it easily )
  3. That looks very similar to the Peter Nichol's one. I'd have a hard time trying to fill it, though!
  4. My collection used to just be totally random but now I've started collecting 20th century Farthings in the best BU (or nearest to) condition I can get. Anybody who wants to sell any....I will pay a premium!

Ok, well, attach a picture because we don't have much to go off

    pfenning

Again, not my area, but it is pfennig. I don't think the German states were unified at that time (it was all fragmented and there were lots of little states, Prussia was the largest I think) so it could be from one of those... Ahh yes I'm right: Full Article If you registered and attached a photo/scan, we may be able to value it for you.
  9. Hold the phone, Geoff ain't the oldest member! Bob-e is, born 1942 methinks!

    19th March Radio Programme

Someone was appointed as something (yeah I'm accurate) I think it was Chairman but the Times said today that Dyke was considering it.

    19th March Radio Programme

Ahh I stand corrected (in orthopaedic shoes hahahahahaha) Have you heard Greg Dyke is thinking of re-applying for the post of Director-General? It was in The Sunday Times today and I thought it quite funny as he said he would never work there again.
  12. 1,521,666,250 for the 1971 penny only beaten by 1,634,976,005 1990 5 pences This is probably stretching it a bit but do we know how many are taken out of circulation?

    numismatics for the complete novice...

Perhaps he/she means they look alike?! Sounds like a novice to me - this is the place!
  15. Oh my edit button has gone missing. Anyhow, looking closer at the pictures in Spinks, the only ones I can see dates on are: Threefarthings Sixpence Threepence So, by process of elimination, I'm quite sure it's one of those Edit: The button has come back - weird
  16. Yes, Gerald, it might be worth something but we need more to go off than "1584 looks silver". If you could register and attach a picture, that would be most helpful. Or, if not, a description. It could be: Fourpence-halfpenny Twopence-farthing Shilling Groat Halfgroat Penny Sixpence Threepence Threehalfpence Threefarthings Halfpenny Crown Halfcrown As you can see, we need more info

Have you [Chris] got any more dates lined up for broadcast with topics of discussion?
  18. Oh no; budget cuts would soon see our ideas off!

    Favourite monarchs

Aargh beyond words Well I estimated 100 because they had them mounted on this transparent map of the Mediterranean and I guess 100, it could be 50 for all I can remember. Oh yeah and Museums don't need business - the majority are funded by the State.

    Favourite monarchs

    Oh yes, centuries of inbreeding

I visited Blackburn Museum this morning and on the early Greek coins from Athens they have the Athenian Owl on. I was really looking forward to seeing the collection but they only had about 100 out. I know they have a Charles II Reddite Pattern Crown, some Commonwealth pieces and a Charles I Triple Unite but those weren't on display! I felt cheated
  22. Cruelty against coins! And we'd obviously have superiority over the RSPCA
  23. Good point. It would be good if they recruited numismatists like ourselves for a Coin Forgery Squad. heheheh
  24. I suppose it's like drugs really - if you're caught with a small amount of a low class substance, they'd probably let you off with a warning. I'd imagine its the same with forgeries but I'd be careful. Edit: Typo
