I have no sympathy - the 'coin' has COPY written on it quite clearly. If people want one to fill a gap in their collection and can't afford the highly inflated price for a real one, then I guess wasting £22 for a copy is OK. Seems a bit pointless though for something that isn't genuine. Even with just £22 they could buy some very nice Elizabeth II predecimal real coins.

This 'sale' wasn't what it appeared to be. With ebay's new 'system' you can get to the sold page, but not open up the page proper. When you try to do this for this page, you get taken directly to an alternative page, suggesting that the seller pulled it before it finished. In short he was probably trying to create an inflated market for this coin. In any case, so what if a coin is 'accidentally' released? Presumably it will be eventually released anyway, by which time how could anybody tell which one was accidentally released or was just released when it was due to be?

I have no illusions about my non-attractability so far as women go, so I have no expectations that anybody of any age would be interested in me. However, as a matter of observation, rather than evolution, it seems to me that there are far too many flabby bodied and slabby faced young women today than there ever were back then. Hence my comment about girls in the 1960s and 70s.

True, but its the pressure of a long queue, and full trays of food, like two fish and chips, two rolls and butter, one steak pie and mash, three cakes at different prices and two teas and a coffee. All to be added in the head, all the while the queue is getting longer and the punters more impatient. I don't. Picture this situation. It's the August Bank Holiday Sunday. I'm a student working the till in the Lyons teashop in the Old Steine Brighton, and there are queues all around the self service counter and almost out into the street. Back then a cup of tea was 6d, a roll and butter 9d, fish and chips 4/11, etc. etc, with some prices including a halfpenny as well, I have to know the actual prices, but at least the new tills back then did the adding up for me. Then the power failed!!!! Good job I was good at maths at school.

If you listen to some people, you would think the NHS is on the verge of total collapse. I recently went to my GP with an eye problem (tear in the retina). I saw the GP at 11.00am. By the time I got home, I had a phone call from the nearest eye specialist for an appointment the next day. Went to see him, got lasered and discharged at 2.00pm. So, all in all 27 hours from diagnosis to treatment. Brilliant, and certainly not an organisation in the crisis and chaos politicians would have you believe.

Correct. The obvious pointer (literally) is the 'I' in 'ELIZABETH', which is either pointing to the right of a corner or pointing to a corner.

Provided that the silver and copper metal are properly mixed to form the alloy then 'traditional' verdigris as found on copper is not going to happen i.e. crusts of green material eating into the surface and ruining the coin. However, the copper in the alloy will still be attacked by air/water and the same copper compounds that comprise verdigris will still form. The difference is that the low concentration of copper in the mix means that clusters of green won't occur but an overall general green sheen across the coin is possible. The desiity of this may vary depending on whether the silver has also reacted with air to form oxides/sulphides i.e has toned, and the pattern of this toning across the coin.

Soak for several months in olive oil and see how it turns out.

Lionellancs rears his head again. Beware this seller - I had a 'difficult' experience with him on eBay over a 1882 no 'H' penny, and wouldn't touch him and his coins with the proverbial now. And as for the price, well he's having a huge laugh. I think my Open '3' cost about a tenth of the price of his and is in better grade, albeit not much more so.

I may be wrong, but I think subscribers get their copies a bit earlier than those who just pick one up from the newsagent.

Your article certainly suggests that the gold parts of the umbrella were made by Charles Cooke, hence the CC. Also, I see from the article that this company had premises in Paris, which might account for the import marks if the parts were either made in Paris and sent to the UK, or the gold was sent over and then used. Either way, I think you have cracked it!

The 'h' certainly looks like 1903/4 and the leopard's head, albeit worn, makes it London. The '12' in a diamond with the '5' is an importation mark for 12 ct gold. Can't work out the C.C which is a makers mark - I'd assume that BRIGG is just the overall manufacturer/assembler of the umbrella.
