    Ebay's Worst Offerings

So was I, Stu!Ah, there it is! I searched everywhere, remembering you said this! was a great day, Declan, SO hot...no shelter...thank god for the cider van! I was in a field on the North side of the runway with about 200 other cars. £15 to the farmer to park up, he supplied a burger van and a few portaloos, and the best seats in the house from the comfort of your own car roof.So close you could feel the heat of the afterburners on your face! How very Declan! I did spot a couple of fields with campers in, on the left hand side as you approached the gate, and thought, yeah, that's the way to do it! Exactly what we plan to do next year, strangely enough!

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Seeing as it has 'COPY' clearly impressed into the reverse, you'd have to be a blind idiot to buy this for £300. Maybe the seller meant £3? It's a shockingly poor example, surely the seller isn't so lacking in the area to know this!Even my wife instantly filed this as fake! Good girl! X You've been spending too much time talking to the missus. Mine also seems to be increasingly well versed in the minutiae of numismatics. Nerd alert! I must learn to stop wittering on about dies and punches and engravers and mints and catalogues and sales and latest purchases and .............................. great stuff!

Lovely coin, what a shame about those fields!

An Elderly Couples coin collection of 30 years gone is ripe with expectation! Could go both ways...looking forward to it!

    Roman Starters!

Re roman coins in general, were the flan weights as carefully calculated as they were in, say, the later medieval period, where discrepancies in weight could highlight or, at least raise suspicions, about authenticity? I know you mentioned (Peck) that fakes are not especially an issue for this area, but I was wondering whether there are parameters that roman collectors stay within before going 'hmmmm'?

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I couldn't get online, was at the air tattoo in fairford, and I'm wondering whether they were jamming signals as a security measure? Damned annoying though, as I couldn't snipe that Roman Denarius either! After eBay's juice, the seller will only have got around half of what they paid for it! 1602's not an easy date, either!

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Will have to check on the date, but within a 12 month I'd say! Better not bid with a george account, then!

Top spot, Dave...man, you're good! I've been watching it from day one! I'd be happy to buy it back! Typical irregular flan of this date, though! Edit: by irregular I mean slightly ovoid!

    more FAKES

It's a pinned thread which is a good start! Edit: I think we should definitely put it in members only, though!

    more FAKES

Confirmation that the H8 Laker Groat is a cast pewter copy! The dark blue background is the coin I had!

    more FAKES

This was my thought exactly as I was reading through this thread!I'd say this group will produce and find out far more information than any 'privileged' minority of coin 'experts' will ever do!

    more FAKES

I had an example of a very similar H8 groat, will look at my images when I get in! Bit of a coincidence that all 3 coins are of known fakes, it must be said!

    Just An Idea

Goom...I know it's the general recommendation to take your time and know your stuff but, in all honesty, the best learning comes from buying some coins and learning from your mistakes! The best advice is choose your target...eg, if you fancy modern milled, don't get big on W4 and Victoria, buy some g5 and 6! Hammered? Don't start with Richard III, buy some Edward pennies! I think you know what I'm saying...buy some coins, you're going to make mistakes, and you have to, in order to have a better understanding for yourself...you can't teach this in words and pictures! Make some mistakes and get onboard, just don't get burnt!

    I Cleaned It

Co-codamol is the best thing I've found for pain, if you don't mind a bit of constipation and going ever so slightly doolally. It does work though... They just don't put enough codeine in the over-counter version (8mg I think it is), though it's better than nothing and, I agree, it does pack a punch!Don't forget folks, co-codamol contains 500mg of paracetamol per tablet too, so two of them is your paracetamol lot! You could always add ibuprofen to the cocktail, if you're desperate, AND you've taken them before!

Nice background too for this fine polished piece of antique silver!
  18. Definitely not cleaned, at least not in the traditional sense! However, it must have had a very, VERY, minor/sensitive dip...though it will take on a very nice patina over the next few years...not that I'd personally be afraid of zipping it up in a flip and living happily with it 'as is'! Still a nice lot of lustre going on on this coin!

    First English Hammered Coin

    Yarp!
  20. There is something about class that cannot be undermined by the multiple attempts to create a new improved contemporary design. George V tried it, and so have others! Pistrucci every time!
  21. Re the C1 Crown...any thoughts on the central region of the obverse being tooled?

I think garret was referring to the link Paulus put up for me of a clipped 6d (no legend left whatsoever)?

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Sorry, Garrett, missed your post! As HC said, a genuine 6d coin, but so heavily clipped as to be worthless, and now around the size of a 3d...hence the 3d reference!
