Nice coin Danz, I really like these W4 pennies! I know someone on here who's got a very nice '34 if you're looking for one! He may have sold it by now but, if you're interested, PM me and I'll reveal all!

Copper, Bronze & Lustre
Coinery replied to sound's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Quality-strike and lustre (and sometimes tone), is a lot of what it's all about, Sound, for the silver, CU, AU, and Coppe/Bronze collectors ! It's the holy grail for as far back as it's possible to get a lustred coin, whereafter tone becomes the measure. -
Copper, Bronze & Lustre
Coinery replied to sound's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Yes, and be quite dazzling for it too, a rich shimmering tone! The one very important thing to remember is lustre-shine and reflectivity are not the same thing as a shiny coin, which will likely be cleaned or polished! Lustre has a luminance about it, definitely 'shimmering,' whereas a polished coin most certainly does not! Welcome aboard sound! -
Edward 1St Penny

Top move, you'll be hooked! Rob (R P Coins) and Clive (Historic Coinage) are your main men in this field, to name but two of many experienced members of this forum. It's a brave and exciting area to collect in, I think you'll be on here a lot...it is rather addictive! -
Edward 1St Penny
Coinery replied to mattyguk1's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Welcome mattyguk, I can heartily recommend 'The Galata Guide to the Pennies of Edward I and II' by Paul & Bente Withers! A very good starting place for these pennies! -
Outrageous! Of course we know why they're doing it! To catch those who sell an item for 99p and then charge £10 postage! They had a go at 'solving' that problem with books, where your postage charge was pre-determined by eBay (which was always £'s under the actual postage cost), forcing you to add the extra to the price of the book...effectively the end for a lot of booksellers who were previously happy with £3 for their books, provided the postage was covered by the buyer! They have got so greedy, they can't surely maintain it for long? It might be better, if they did want to be extra greedy, to perhaps charge 10% on postage that's over and above the price of 'real' postal charges so, a recorded large-letter in the UK attracts a 10% fee on anything above £2 + a reasonable packaging cost? Bastards!

Fake Cromwell Crown
Coinery replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The man who bought that possesses much indeed! I'd be surprised if the 'specifics' of this coin become common knowledge? More likely an investment tool for a grading company is my guess! Or, of course, it belongs now to a very high class collector of the genuine articles? -
Barking mad, I tell you!

It's true the £107 bid was made 4 minutes after bidding opened, but you need other bidders to push the current winning bid up and it took nearly 2 days to pass the £100 mark. Of course, but this is my def of protection/shilling! List a coin, protect it immediately with a bid you won't accept less than (the newly listed brigade are surely smart enough not to place their top bid within 4 mins of listing, with 7/10 days to run, hoping they'll get a bargain?), and then go to bed for the week, forgetting all about it!That's how I see it! ??? Totally agree about the protection bid. You just need to watch if the same Person does it a few times then you'll know for sureIn view of Nick's observations "It's possible that it's a protection bid, 25% of that bidder's bids have been with that seller in the last 30 days but nothing has been won. It would help to find out the full eBay id for that bidder," I think it's really suspicious! A similar thing happened to their Mary Groat I was going to bid on!Still makes me burn, when I think of the insulting online course my father and I had to complete to unlock our accounts, for a dog cage that he wouldn't have sold for less than the reserve (which you pay for) anyway! Grrrr!

Whenever I've sold off silver B on eBay, I've always bumped into the least decent % of eBayers. I'd say I've had to relist around a third of the bullion I've sold! I did get a nice surprise with the last listings, however, when someone from Estonia won all 4 100g lots at a good price, and duly thanked me with good FB a week later!

Fake Cromwell Crown
Coinery replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Blinking heck, that is good! I can understand, if you are a serious collector of early milled, why you'd want an example of these faked coins. Let's face it, if you're well enough placed to be buying originals of these types of coins, it's not going to break your bank to run a secondary collection of counterfeits and fakes alongside. -
Totally agree, if that coin has full mint lustre I'd be extremely surprised. It could be the photography, but it's not something that generally lets Lucido down!

Slightly less attractive print on the reverse of this one...just in case Azda thinks I'm going soft on prints! -

Haggis - An acquired taste when boiled (unless you love boiled lamb fat), amazing when sliced and fried like black pudding! Totally different animal, then! -
1845 Half Crown - 5/3 ?
Coinery replied to Phil's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think the big problem is, unless any said variety is acknowledged to be so by the academic towers, it just doesn't exist, other than speculativley (unless you can privately prove otherwise). In general, there are few who splash out on a variety/rarity unless it's been sanctioned by 'the board', though we all enjoy pushing the boundaries! If you want a new varity out of this, Phil, you just need to find a high-grade example from the same die, and/or look for any features that can link it to the original 3 die. All good fun! -
1845 Half Crown - 5/3 ?
Coinery replied to Phil's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Amazing how that 'back loop' and the protrusions I saw on the phone have disappeared! It could be a three, though I'd not personally buy it as such, or truly think it to be, not without a die-match or much better evidence!Edit: Idon't think it's an overdate, sorry! -
1845 Half Crown - 5/3 ?
Coinery replied to Phil's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Welcome aboard, Phil! A really difficult one...it does look as though there are some interesting features. However, I would say that, what looks like an upper back-curve of a three, is just a little too inconsistent with the shape for a full-shaped 3? Also, the little prominences at the front top-edge, and front-edge, of the 5, look a little damaged/clogged die, cruddy, a little like the edges of the 4? I don't know, would need a little more experience of type, which is not in short supply on here! A die-study would help! -
London Coins Auction - Anyone Bidding?
Coinery replied to jaggy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Not for class pieces, I'd say not! But [by human nature] what bid is determined by the estimate! As an example, you bid five times the estimate to secure the coin, if the estimate had been five times what it was, you would still have had a go, and could possible have had some competition alongside you?Edit: strike 'by human nature' -
London Coins Auction - Anyone Bidding?
Coinery replied to jaggy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
And thats how non rarities sell for above their price because everyone who has an eye on a particular coin will have observied the esrimate and thought well maybe someone will go higher than top estimate, so i'll go a smidge higher, meanwhile the other 5 or 6 wannabes will be thinking the same thing and do the same and in the end we have an overpriced coin. Another thing most auction houses do, is place the estimate range lower than the value to stimulate bidding, and also only let the seller place a reserve at 60% of the low estimate (I know Baldwins does it this way)! When you're buying to sell, the low estimates always stand out but, as you say, I think they are generally set to attract bidders! The truly class material, however, generally adopts a different principle entirely, and I'm guessing that you all know what I mean by that! Top dollar estimate to attract an 80% paper bid, and they'll go from there, thank-you very much! -
Hey, £5 was OK?
