    Where To Sell Old Coins

To be honest with you, unless you've got some class pieces, or rarities, then eBay is likely to be your best bet!The hard bit is knowing the psychology and mechanics of the eBay process, so you don't end up giving your stuff away, but that is a book in itself, and one that every member on here would read if it indeed existed! As Peckris has pointed out, a few pictures of what you consider to be your better coins would be a good starting point! Not forgetting that, if you can't take a good quality picture, then you may as well forget eBay...quality pictures secure the best bids every time!

Welcome aboard, W3, can hardly believe there are still young collectors out there (though we do have at least one other on here who drops in once in a while)! Great stuff, look forward to some future images!
  4. I remember...and just who was that girl/woman? Err what woman, are you thinking of The High Chaparrel (Linda Cristal) I presume we are talking television here?Leaving aside the name which is irrelevant. How irregular? Any worthwhile pictures? (says he in anticipation ) Linda Cristal played Victoria. I'm struggling to find any decent pictures of her.....or indecent How strange that you passed go and still thought of exactly the person I actually meant! What an elegant item she was! Rather attractive in full-lustre I would think?

Link I can't see either an 8 or a 7 - just a 3 or a 5 partly obscured by a blob. It's an 8. The 8 isn't conventional on Eliz.1 coins having a flat top to one loop and rounded on the other. A 1563 or 1565 dated coin with the coronet mark would be an anomaly as the mark was only current from 1/7/1567 until 28/2/1570. It wouldn't stay listed for long if genuine. Yes, but the bottom loop doesn't even pretend to be complete - there are Liz 1 8's where the bottom loop is a circle. Have a look at this: http://www.historyincoins.com/xxx-14-9-9-5.jpg I think the bottom loop's affected by a partially blocked die, Peck, it does look as though a faint loop is there! It might even have flaked off?Edit: just dug the book out. Buck's is BCW reverse CN-h2, which is a straight '68. Your history in coins link is interesting, but I can't get a good image on the phone...interesting, as in, BCW record their 2 8/7 varieties with the 8 inverted (ie sat on its flat top), unlike historyincoin's? If it is one? Will be intrigued to look at the devices later! :-)

Luckily they are doing 2 for 1 at the moment. Use the first pair to do a bit of background reading, and the second to correct your faulty eyesight. See previous post. And thanks, Nick and Paulus for the links!

This is the real art of buying. Book price is one thing, but one also has to weigh 1. Where book price is unrealistically low, as Spink can be where coins rarely come to market 2. How far above book one is prepared to go, to win something one really really wants 3. imponderables such as 'above average eye appeal' or strike, etc I've been far too guilty in my time of using 'book' as a kind of bible, above which I wouldn't go, and missed some beautiful coins as a result. The example that comes most often to mind is a W&W auction in 1997 or 1998 - one of my first, if not the first - where there was a BU 1873 penny. Book price was then, I think, around £75. I dropped out at that point, and the penny went for over £100 (£110? £120?). Oh why didn't I stay in? I just didn't know, as I do now, that truly BU examples of any bun penny between 1864 and 1881, very rarely appear and are snapped up as soon as they do. I'm guilty of this too! There's something I'm watching at the moment, about a year in fact, and I've been stupidly waiting for it to come into book range...I'll likely end up regretting this year-long wait, but I hope not!
  10. Or as they say in binary - 01010111 01101000 01100001 01100001 01100001 01100001 01100001 01100001 01101000 00111111 Whah????????????????

That's precisely why I don't use sniping software. I can trust myself to sit with my maximum bid in the box, ready to hit the 'Confirm bid' button with 7 seconds to go. But I couldn't trust myself with a ridiculous maximum just to win it - I'd be mortified if, as you nearly said, some other bugger had done the same! Never has a truer word been said...however, the number of coins I've missed for a telephone call, or a knock at the door or, in truth, quite simply, because I've (mostly) forgot to sign-in in time to place a bid, is lamentable!

I never look at any of that when using Sniper for resale! Once or twice, I've entered a 1000 for a coin I really wanted, even though I've won it for 250...that's just how it goes! I would've been gutted if some 'idiot' had done the same thing, but would've felt no less disappointed to have won it at £900 (maybe a bit)! I love the no-nonsense approach of auction sniping software!
  13. Great work, Colin, and a great find! Almost makes me want to focus on farthings! Well, Threefarthings, at least!

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I use Auction Sniper, I think they are all much of a muchness, but worth every penny! The number of bargains I've missed, when not sniping, would've paid for it over and over again!I did catch JB for a few coins about two years ago, which I turned a couple of hundred quid a piece on maybe that's why he's now a shiller? That's good going Stuart! Such rich pickings are getting harder to find! Not that I've found more than a few over the years that I have made that sort of mark-up on, but then I'm not a dealer! What I would like is something that captures a bargain BIN before it is snaffled up, anyone know of anything?? It would need to be quite sophisticated! The BIN area is an area I've never really visited (though I have been watching one particular BIN coin for nearly a year now - it hasn't got to fall very much further and you'll get to see it on here [hammered & QE1]), I always factor it out of my searches, though I do remember Rob saying it was for rich pickings! Maybe I should take a better look at the 'newly listed' material in future, perhaps later in the year? You've let the cat out of the bag now, Paulus!

Well no, agreed, not exactly, though I'm as immune as I am wondering what comes out of the tap, or wondering what pollutants I breath in our great british fresh air!

a***d clearly wants to win that one! That one is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!! WHY on earth would someone, with over a day to go, revise his maximum bid TEN TIMES IN TWO MINUTES with no other bidding going on? It could be a tactic by the seller to encourage bidding or it could be a tactic by the bidder to discourage bidding, not an easy one to decideI really don't understand all these tactical games played on eBay! 75% of the things I buy on eBay are not destined for the 'folder,' so I am careful 'ish' with my approach...however, by careful, I don't mean I check out who's bidding, and how many bids are on, or how many bids have been placed by someone who's bidding (what's wrong with those people, they could've looked at 50 other coins instead, and maybe bagged a bargain? Do they really believe such nonsense would put off a true adversary?) I look, I see, and I SNIPE, according to what I want to pay for the coin! With sniping software, you are immune to all the shilling, and fancy bid stacking that goes on! Viva la Snipe! Edit: just re-read this, and it might be confusing! I didn't mean 'why D&N looks at these things, I meant 'why do people spend all that time stacking and 'fancying-up' their listings, or their intended purchases, to lay a false trail?'

Still looking a little 'wrong' though, not that I can fathom it? Who places a bid, and then thinks, 'shit', I'm going to UP my bid to be sure and, THEN thinks, 'hmmm', I'm going to UP it again and, then thinks...
  19. Keep us safe, seuk! Late G3 appears to be the golden age of counterfeits and fakes...to all web readers (and we probably underestimate the exposure), I personally wouldn't even consider the period without dealer knowledge, or a damn good read around seuk's website! It's a period that's not for the faint hearted, in my opinion!
  20. Strimming...OH, man, have I done my fair share of that! Watch out for slugs and dog excrement!
  21. That's a shame - took me quite a while in photoshop. But to summarise, the CGS photo looks elongated in the vertical plane, which would make the bust look comparatively narrow ('squashed'). That would also account for the broader harp in the 'fake'. None of this is to say it ISN'T a fake, just that the comparison with the CGS photo probably isn't much of a case. Makes very good sense, Peck, will dig the Laptop out tomorrow morning...probably just my I-Phone signal, we've just moved...EVEN closer to Declan!
  22. For some reason I can't access any of the uploaded images but, still without photographic comparisson, and purely a stab in the dark without evidence, the body of the harp looked broader, and details like the buckle, well everything, actually, just felt wooly, or 'weak'! And I'm also stabbing in the dark, without die comparisons so, I too, could be shot down in flames (but I don't mind, I'll just go to my boating forum friend's instead)! Edit: to learn all about getting me bottom blacked, and me stern gland sorted!
  23. Without a genuine image for quick reference, I'd still suggest most of the devices are terrible on the reverse, the angel on the harp especially so! These G3 halfcrowns are such a viper's nest, that you really wouldn't attempt a purchase without running over seuk's site so, in all likelihood, you wouldn't get caught out...hopefully!
