Storage of Coins - Advice
Coinery replied to Stockportjohn's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi John, and welcome! You've probably realised already how diverse the storage options are! There are many here who use cabinets and capsules, I can only speak for myself! I really like the 2x2 adhesive flips, with the clear windows, and I keep these in little wallets, 6 per page. It really suits me for that quick flick through, which I do far FAR too often, I like the ease of viewing both sides! All that remains is to keep them in a dry atmosphere, avoiding large temperature changes (which is my greatest difficulty at the moment)! I'm sure there's more to come from other members but, in the mean time, there are loads of threads on here that have looked at storage...well worth a surf around! Enjoy, enjoy, and welcome, once again! -
1967 penny goes for silly money

Sorry, Stuart. I took this to be an April Fools' prank, as I thought you were on your iPhone. I did think for one aweful moment that the lack of response was due to everyone being sat at home, scratching their heads as to why smoke was billowing out of their PCs! Could have been the ultimate April Fool! -

This link completely froze my computer and send my hard-drive into a grinding frenzy, leaving me with no option but to crash it! Has it been OK for everyone else? Oh dear, that wasn't the intention at all. I'm sorry that happened to you. It can't have been the link, not if everyone else is browsing it trouble free! I'll have to take a look at the 'events' tomorrow! Probably had too many pages open for my poor, heavily ladened, old laptop! -

You will need a copy of Derek Allen's Grading Guide, Freeman - bronze, Davies - silver and Dave Groom's silver and bronze books to act as references. Stick your nose into them and learn the identifiers thoroughly and you are set up to collect. Good advice Rob! With those 4 you wouldn't need any of the others for ages. I wouldn't bother with the price guides yet, Ozzy. It won't take you long to work out what's overpriced and what's a bargain. Stick to Eliz-II and learn it well before moving on to G6. And don't buy any junk! There shouldn't be anything you have to settle for low grade in that period (apart from the 56 ha'penny varieties maybe). Nothing cleaned, enamelled, pierced, polished, or otherwise abused. Learn the difference between an UNC and an EF. Aim for wall-to-wall beauty. Says it all, Ozzy!

"CGS comes of age"
Coinery replied to 1949threepence's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Survival, giving the punters what they want, but also realising that they had built themselves a temple upon sand! It's ludicrous to claim "our 78 will always be 78," and in the same breath compare yourselves to other equivilents that call a 78 UNC or whatever! It's a back-door feed, no different to saying our 78 is whatever you want it to be, providing you give us your money. It's true their greatest mistake was to arrive at a numerical grade based upon variable non-circulatory flaws, and then state what's UNC or not based on those numbers...that clearly isn't fair, because a coin that has no device wear, but has an edge bruise from being dropped by a collector, is still UNC regardless. However, it is easily understood how if that coin was a hypothetical 92 Pre-drop, that it is now a 77, BUT it is still uncirculated! To make these changes doesn't change anything about the service of CGS that is irritating, namely, timescales! I'd also say they're good for Government with their spin..."How can we give them what we want!" If you love TPG's then this change makes little difference! If you are indifferent, and awake, then really nothing's changed! So, as was mentioned...stand down, gentleman, false alert! -

Heartbreaker for sure! As an aside, that's a fantastic crop you've got as an avatar, Nicholas, is the whole coin to that standard, it looks amazing? -

Had me thinking over T, but where's the left serif of the T? Possible upside down G, that could be a logical mistake? Not helped by what appears to nasty old clog. Interesting one! -

I guess the success rate of pre-auction bids will have been greatly improved if they were operating a flawed Live Bidding system. Shame on them if they don't resolve this issue smartish, they have a responsibility to the consignor, if nothing else! -
Forgery Elizabeth I Martlet Shilling

Warwick & Warwick 15th August 2012, Sale 700, Lot 490 (£200 + juice)! I never even looked at this coin properly until today, when I was just about to make it available for sale. I even got so far as to catalogue it BCW MR-4Gi:b1, before putting it on the scales to add the final touch to the description...4.32g, and for a good grade. Bugger, I thought, not a good omen! So, gentlemen, here we have an electrotype MR-4Gi:b1 shilling of Elizabeth I...that'll be TWO fakes I managed to buy at the W&W sale last August though, fortunately, I managed to spot the other in a bulk lot before leaving the building! Feast your eyes...what's it worth? Has anyone seen enough sell in the past to give me a rough percentage of the value of the genuine article? -
Man, you've got this coin collecting bug so bad! Is there not a period, country, type, or metal you DON'T collect?

Yes! I had a big buying splurge that month, and just took it for granted, slipping it away in my E1 box for later attention. I never liked the significant lefthand obverse clip, so always had it in my mind to pull it back out and sell it at some point. 7 months later is not a good time to retrieve it and give it a proper look over. I feel pretty blessed by the W&W email...I will be going there in April to check-out some bulk, and single 20thC pieces (no E1 for sale this time, unfortunately). Have a Good Friday...viva la successes in coining! Thanks, Peter! -

Thanks Nick - a whole new knowledge chasm has just opened up for me! Better get swotting ... The WB thing frightens me to death! I think that's why I've kept putting it off and stuck to tweaking with the editing software instead! The problem with that is that unless you shoot RAW (and most P&S or compact cameras don't have that option), editing software won't do very much in correcting faulty WB. You can always change 'colour temperature' but you can often end up with blown highlights. Getting the WB correct in-camera will give better JPEGs in the long run. Yes, I agree, I really must resolve this issue at the point of capture! Oh, time and brain-space, why dost thou eternally forsake me? -

Email sent off today, they'll end up blacklisting me for sure, I've already got a credit with them for the fake I pulled out of a 15-coin lot before going home. I just wish they kept their catalogue images in an online database, I'd be home and dry then! They could so easily just brush me off should they 'conveniently' lose their own records of the images! -
I remember just watching for weeks while a coin stagnated at a particular stage, surprising given they're not getting the numbers they'd like! So does this mean the Northy is home and dry? I have to say, the ?plug isn't anything like as obvious in the images CGS have taken. Is it just a distorted crown arch instead? Could be interesting! That crown's truly beautiful! When they are that good, a tiny scratch feels like it's been hit with an axe.

Looking forward to sorting it out, will save me hours in the long run! -

The reverse pic is in the main description section, do you want bigger/better pics of it? What die pairing is it? I can't seem to find any daylight bulbs that fit my desk lamps, I am using 2 cheap Ikea desk lamps (your suggestion!) with halogen bulbs - so yes to the offer of the spare bulbs! - but the fittings are the 'small Edsion' screw types (is that what they are called?) and the local wholesale leccy shop does have any daylight bulbs for that fitting in its (extensive) catalogue. I am just getting to know the camera, it has all sorts of WB settings, I am currently using one called 'K' - whatever that means! A lot better than no WB, then my silver collection comes out more like gold, but much room for improvement! The bulbs I have are screw fit, the larger screw size, will measure tomorrow, all your's if they fit! I think the reverse liz image is a duplicate of your P&M coin? -

Might want to take a look at your Lizzy reverse? I'd definitely buy that die-pairing! Edit: great pictures by the way! I think a good image will pay for the camera, over and over! You've got the same White Balance issue as me, I still haven't got round to playing with it, yet, but Nick's idea could be a winner. What are you lighting with? I've got a couple of spare daylight bulbs you could have if you wanted them? Just fit them into desk lamps...you'd still need to tweak the WB though, maybe? -
