  1. Chris, an appeal to you...can we have a separate 'link,' or whatever the correct terminology is for it, akin to the 'new varieties' section, where known fakes can be posted under sub-divisions, Elizabeth I, George III, etc., with perhaps a page clarifying how the location should be used? Namely, 'nothing but counterfeit talk here please,' and under the right sub-heading, please, on pain of death! It seems a bit of a waste that all the valuable past contributions have just disappeared into the ether, dependant upon someone guessing that the thread began with a title like 'my favourite christmas present from marilyn,' or whatever?? Could become a major resource, could bring even more traffic to the forum! I obviously have no comprehension of the logistics involved in this, but it would surely be worthwhile in the name of numismatics?
  2. I'm pretty sure you can also go to the google search page and find a button somewhere that either says something like 'make my homepage' or 'set as default' etc. I'm not on the PC so can't check exactly!
  3. Osborne's article is in the 1984 BNJ p.164-209, just before Besly's York mint article. A very useful volume. Thanks, Rob!
  4. It's a crossover mule - two obverses, two reverses, so 4 possible combinations. Pointings are the quickest and easiest indicators: Obv 3, Rev C, F.471, C10, I of DEI nearly at a bead, L of HALF between beads Obv 3, Rev D, F.473, R5, I of DEI nearly at a bead, L of HALF at a bead Obv 4, Rev C, F.474, R12, I of DEI between beads, L of HALF between beads Obv 4, Rev D, F.475, R3, I of DEI between beads, L of HALF at a bead Now I'm confused, perhaps I should read the entire thread, but are these not 4 different obverses then? I've only just woke up so could be having a senile moment!
  5. Dragging his response onto the forums is as nasty as you can get...PERFECT! He obviously has a lot of time on his hands! I'm surprised he hasn't written his own papers and published with the BNJ by now!

  7. I do like the coin, that's why I bought it. It's just the perennial problem of having two coins of slightly differing grades, but preferring the look of the lower graded coin. I flipped a couple of 1902 pennies back and forth for about a fortnight, having exactly the same dilemma! Also, if the leaf didn't reach the bottom of the die, I guess it would be convex...all speculation of course! "Heads I'll buy you GEF, tails I'll buy you AUNC" [a fortnight later..] "Heads I'll buy you GF, tails I'll buy you AVF" and not so far from the truth! I owned them both and couldn't for the life of me decide which one to keep and which one to sell. Fortunately it's not an issue that often!
  8. Sorry Rob I can't help with this one, the issue was resolved, or resolved itself, following a few others identifying similar issues!
  9. Don't understand this. The last time someone initiated a PM for me was at the end of May/beginning of June. Don't know what's happened since, but if anyone knows how to reinstate the ability to PM me, please feel free to speak out. Yep, I tried to PM you the other night...wouldn't let me, emailed you instead, as you know!

  11. So do you think it's possible that the highest points of the design just ran out of metal, so to speak, with the added relief Victoria now sucking extra silver? So weak strike, possibly? Just exploring a theory, given that weaknesses are a common side-effect of designs that are too volumous, G5 being a classic example?

Makes you feel pretty helpless! This is yet another occasion where knowing the actual buyer's user name would be so useful! Imagine emailing the buyer a quick link to this thread, hopefully getting it there before they paid?

I've never come across anything quite like that on eBay, before! With 70 feedback, could he actually draw the funds from PayPal and be gone? Does anyone know if PayPal still coughs-up if the money's gone from the sellers account? Any experiences out there?

Coins are real enough, but they belong to Bolton Museum. So what's going on?

  16. Nick, where you can see the underside of Victoria's chin, just left of the S in six, is the bust incuse or in relief, it's one of those optical illusions for me? Also, speaking personally, I'd alway prefer a GEF fully-struck over a aUNC with weaknesses!

Looks about as genuine as Katie Prices lady bumps! Some men like silicon John.....................Around the bath and window frames I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole (the only thing that fills Katie Price properly ) Bloody 'ell, Peter, glad I've finished my lunch!

With a picture of that quality and showing only about 2/3 of one side, he isn't giving anybody much of a chance to decide! If it IS genuine, he's done himself a great disservice with the image and listing! I've got a number of fake images now, even bought a couple for a closer look, so it would have been interesting to compare, if his images were better!

    Cataloguing my collection....

The best thing I have done recently is subscribe to an automated off-site back up facility. All of the data on my pc (actually I choose which) is constantly backed up in the background, and I can log in at any time and download the backed-up data. I can even access it from my iPhone or an iPad. The initial backup took about a month to complete (80Gb in my case) but subsequent backups happen almost in real time. The system I use is Carbonite, but I know there are others. Well worth a few pounds a month! I use Dropbox, which is free. I only get 3GB but that's enough for everything except music, pictures and movies (for which I have an external HD). But like your solution, it backs up everything invisibly in the background, so worry-free. I have all word processing docs, spreadsheets, databases, emails, and a few selected pictures. Plus all my browser bookmarks and my address book. A job for tomorrow I think!
  20. I'd definitely say good fine but, to exaggerate the point, imagine a full'ish' flan shilling at 4.7g...you wouldn't touch it with a barge pole! The pitting wouldn't have necessarily put me off, I have to say, but the weight would have me running away at a million miles an hour! If you paid by PayPal, and I would never pay by any other means on eBay ( unless I either knew the seller, or was convinced of the piece beyond doubt), then you should be OK to get your money back (if that's where this is headed)!
  21. You queried pennies or half pennies? I'd say halfpennies, quite simply because they are not as popular (for some strange reason) as pennies or farthings (YET), meaning you can pick-up the grades you are referring to quite cheaply! Essentially, learn and make your mistakes on half pennies, make all your lustre and grading mistakes on Victorian half pennies, it will not hurt half as much as it may if you leap straight onto the pennies bandwagon! You may actually get to love halpennies, it's a great mystery to me why they are currently so underrated? Take advantage! Welcome aboard, you have made the single most intelligent step towards understanding coins by posting here!
  22. Not that I'm aware. I don't believe I've had any problems (but I only get notifications when someone pms me). I wonder if it might be your email system? Have you checked that it doesn't think there's something dodgy about predecimal.com and isn't filtering them somehow? Oh, and I replied to your pm at 17.20 today Fri 6 July, in case you don't get it until later and are interested to know when it was sent! Thanks Richard, That is strange! They are not being filtered by my spam folder. I use AOL mail, so perhaps it is a problem with them. When I mentioned replies, I meant to the PM's and not forum posts, if that is of any help. Sometimes I do not get any email notifications, other times they arrive the next day or so There was a glitch in the system a while back, I and it seemed a number of others, were not receiving email notifications for PM's at all...I think mine's OK now though?

Looks like somebody told him he was talking complete bo**ocks. Now relisted correctly. here. Hardly a bargain though at £650 when you could buy the Slaney coin off Allan Davisson's last list for $4K. He's apparently got some interesting things to come too!

He's done well to fairytale a bell out of the foot of the P! I think the 11o'clock'ish legend double-strike is actually showing the upper left-hand component of the V? I'm only making that assumption based on the locations of the double-struck P&O of ferry! Actually, just revisited that reverse...it can't be the V, it's in the wrong place comparative to the P&O, very strange! I think I've got it. The clue is in the right hand leg of the double struck cross. The bell is an offset P which is also not fully struck up and so resembles the side of an A which is the main cause for confusion - I couldn't reconcile AO in the legend and the O could not be the D of ADIVTORE. POSVI is there twice, rotated and displaced outwards to NNW. Detail would help, but hey, when you have an impossible error you must take what comes. impossible error? I've just spotted a Lis to the right of the obverse privy mark, he/she's got something rather special in that coin, I can hardly understand why they're selling it? I hope it goes to a good home, however, someone who will appreciate it!
