  1. I'd definitely say good fine but, to exaggerate the point, imagine a full'ish' flan shilling at 4.7g...you wouldn't touch it with a barge pole! The pitting wouldn't have necessarily put me off, I have to say, but the weight would have me running away at a million miles an hour! If you paid by PayPal, and I would never pay by any other means on eBay ( unless I either knew the seller, or was convinced of the piece beyond doubt), then you should be OK to get your money back (if that's where this is headed)!
  2. You queried pennies or half pennies? I'd say halfpennies, quite simply because they are not as popular (for some strange reason) as pennies or farthings (YET), meaning you can pick-up the grades you are referring to quite cheaply! Essentially, learn and make your mistakes on half pennies, make all your lustre and grading mistakes on Victorian half pennies, it will not hurt half as much as it may if you leap straight onto the pennies bandwagon! You may actually get to love halpennies, it's a great mystery to me why they are currently so underrated? Take advantage! Welcome aboard, you have made the single most intelligent step towards understanding coins by posting here!
  3. Not that I'm aware. I don't believe I've had any problems (but I only get notifications when someone pms me). I wonder if it might be your email system? Have you checked that it doesn't think there's something dodgy about predecimal.com and isn't filtering them somehow? Oh, and I replied to your pm at 17.20 today Fri 6 July, in case you don't get it until later and are interested to know when it was sent! Thanks Richard, That is strange! They are not being filtered by my spam folder. I use AOL mail, so perhaps it is a problem with them. When I mentioned replies, I meant to the PM's and not forum posts, if that is of any help. Sometimes I do not get any email notifications, other times they arrive the next day or so There was a glitch in the system a while back, I and it seemed a number of others, were not receiving email notifications for PM's at all...I think mine's OK now though?
  4. Looks like somebody told him he was talking complete bo**ocks. Now relisted correctly. here. Hardly a bargain though at £650 when you could buy the Slaney coin off Allan Davisson's last list for $4K. He's apparently got some interesting things to come too!
  5. He's done well to fairytale a bell out of the foot of the P! I think the 11o'clock'ish legend double-strike is actually showing the upper left-hand component of the V? I'm only making that assumption based on the locations of the double-struck P&O of ferry! Actually, just revisited that reverse...it can't be the V, it's in the wrong place comparative to the P&O, very strange! I think I've got it. The clue is in the right hand leg of the double struck cross. The bell is an offset P which is also not fully struck up and so resembles the side of an A which is the main cause for confusion - I couldn't reconcile AO in the legend and the O could not be the D of ADIVTORE. POSVI is there twice, rotated and displaced outwards to NNW. Detail would help, but hey, when you have an impossible error you must take what comes. impossible error? I've just spotted a Lis to the right of the obverse privy mark, he/she's got something rather special in that coin, I can hardly understand why they're selling it? I hope it goes to a good home, however, someone who will appreciate it!

  7. I think this policy has been a standard for a long time, normally affecting NEW sellers with small feedback! Could be wrong, of course?
  8. Interesting. Is that Elizabeth I? Aha. Bit more info here: http://www.pccoinsandcollectables.com/product.php?cat_id=6&sub_id=62&pro_id=460 Very atypical portrait, even though we don't really know what she looked like (she was hyper-controlling of her image, would put Disney to shame ). I was wondering about Elizabeth's control over the images on her coins only a couple of days ago! I've got two sixpences on the way, with more diametrically opposing busts you'll never find (4B & 6C), talk of princess meets the hulk! I bought them to cut the busts out for 'RESEARCH,' honest, so will post the pair up as soon as...shocking stuff, Bust 6C is definitely a watershed image!
  9. Should know better than that when selling a rare-bust Willyum (error spelling) coyn! He knows it's worth a bit, he can't be a fool for the rest of it, surely? On a slightly different scale, the number of those who think they've got an 8 over 7 in Elizabeth coinage, just drives me to despair, not that it's even that unusual anyway! I know everyone is learning, but if you do have an 'oddity' you want to use as a selling point, at least spend 10 minutes finding out about it!
  10. I was looking at this one myself, it's actually pretty high grade, with little in the way of bag marks, and a superb edge, only a little bit of overspill. I had my eye on it for a retone, but not at that price! My thoughts too. What a shame it was cleaned, it would be very collectable otherwise. And bought at a car boot, apparently! I wonder if it would break their hearts to hear of 'what it could've been worth,' had it not been cleaned? Imagine if they cleaned it themselves to make it look more appealing before listing it on eBay? (

  12. Come on Dilly, there's lots to go on here, what's your thoughts?
  13. Lol I know where your coming from. I started on Edward vII florins then got a few of his shillings then a couple of vickys shillings then a couple of Edwards sixpences. Now I've just bought a Charles 1 sixpence You're all crazy! He says having also bought a Charles XII today, when he should be keeping the cash for his other coin 'research'! Apparently, if you call it research, you can justify it to the other half! God knows what I shall have to come up with for the Charles XII?
  14. You've got that roving eye, Mongo! You've got it bad m'friend! I do love the warmth of copper and bronze! And I like the stark black against the silver of old hammered! And I like the soft golden tones over the lustre of later milled silver! And I...
  15. How did you manage to post that? When I try to reply to it, I get "The number of opening quote tags does not match the number of closing quote tags." I've amended your quoted post to correct it, otherwise it wouldn't let me post. I do seem to have the knack of pressing a few buttons and breaking things, never to see them work again! LOL - but you didn't get a message when you posted that? Interesting, no I didn't! I do normally get warned off however when I'm cutting out links and text without concentrating! Strange! Can we call this one an extremely rare 3 over 4?

  17. Long tail Q, Davies rev. A Thanks Rob! I was actually just looking at the ones you have for sale, I might go for both types you have on offer. Then I will only have to find the long tail to complete the set! Cripes, are you micro'ing' already, Mongo? It's testament to the quality of this forum that you are even giving it a go. As I've said over and over, a learning resource like this one is worth a dozen books and more. Having said that, you then need the books! But hooray for you, great stuff. Your thread's really inspired me! The resources, the books.... but I also need the money! I thought the 1887 shilling would be a good place to start with something like this, as the prices are affordable for me. I am also looking into the Old head Victoria farthings varieties, with the help of Colin and his Aboutfarthings site! You should have a go at the Edward VII farthings too, that's a good challenge in high grade and nice tone!

  19. I've not actually checked out the correct punches for the 3, but looking at the tone of the coin and the areas surrounding the 3, I have to say it doesn't ring any alarm bells for me! But that's just me, of course!
  20. NOPE! All looking promising! I did scan the web for the 8 over 7 and didn't find any matches! I don't suppose there would have been THAT many 8/7 dies either...any rough ideas on how many I would have to rule out? More Rob's teritory that I'm afraid. But there were two ebay listings supposedly for 1578/7/6 sixpences. Maybe email the buyers/ sellers and see if they have photos they would send you? http://feedback.ebay.com.my/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=jerseyjohnjames&ftab=FeedbackAsSeller http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=oldgroats&iid=-1&de=off&items=25&which=positive&interval=365 Now that's class, Richard, thank-you, will email them tomorrow!
  21. A lot of the 1893 proof coins are toned that way, so it may not be artificially toned. Looks like it was photographed in an eighties nightclub!

  23. Ok, let's for the moment consider it is a die flaw... So can anyone quote which variety? I have found some fairly close matches but not this exact die. Thanks There are many dies made for the same year, using individual punches, so you might be searching for a little while to find an exact die match! I agree with Rob, with my primary thought on the 'blob' appearance and location of it. All is not lost, however, as I couldn't see a stop after GVLIELMVS - could just be the quality of the picture. You'd have to have a microscopic look at it, particularly as it could have just erroded/worn or been weakly struck to begin with! Welcome, by the way, how did you come by it?
  24. Meet me down the pub, I've got something to show you!
