  1. Brilliant! You don't see too many in collectable grades! ?
  2. Great evening, thank-you, and head was surprisingly crystal clear in the morning! Would love to see the ACTUAL reverse when you get it! ?
  3. Cheers, Mick! Yes, a massive milestone, really struggling to get my head around it! I'm reliably informed that 50, 60, and 70 are the new 30 and 40! I felt nothing about being 30 OR 40, but 50 is tough! Pressies? Joined the sailing club in Frampton, a few beers, and a bite to eat with the family...game of cards to finish (30p up), a perfect birthday! ?
  4. I wonder who snaffled it? A perfectly acceptable Class 1 Henry III went as well 332374030300 . I would've liked the H3 myself. ?
  5. Why thank-you, Sir! And please do call me Stuart, Stu, Stewpot, anything you like, really! ?
  6. Just looked on eBay! They've got the wrong reverse image, it's probably a London as per the description.
  7. Didn't get a chance to look, and I'm out for the weekend (50 today), arghh! there's a chance the pics are mixed up??
  8. NOVICASTRI
  9. Newcastle, it's in my watch list!
  10. Anyone make a note of lot 1158?
  11. Nail on the head, Peter! ?
  12. They know nuffin, TG, absolutely nuffin!
  13. I 100% agree with you, and I'm guessing your 2 point grading system is quite simply: grade 1 - I like/want it! grade 2 - I don't like/need it! I'd have to add a third tier to that grading system, however, the... "grade 3 - holy mother of god I so, SO, want that!" ...kind of grade/variety!
  14. I'm just grateful that, for the most part, the grades belonging to raw hammered coins remain blissfully simple.
  15. Yes, even a claim of GF would have me returning to look at it over and over, before finally saying (at best) "mmm, ok, in some people's eyes...maybe...but there's no way I'd be parting with a penny above recent sales documented at fine grade for the variety." What a shocker!
  16. This slabbing thing still amazes me! Yes, weak strike, soft strike, clogged devices...yet, with even all that taken into consideration, there is still nothing about even the best of the remaining devices that could warrant the grade! 152705034251
  17. I tried egg AND liver of sulphur in the past, but never got it looking nice, I could never get that 'thick' feeling of a nice deep, rich, tone, it always looked 'thin' and lacking the depth and shimmer of a nice old tone. also, without any rationale whatsoever the tone on some coins, achieved this way, would just wash off and look awful. ?
  18. Thanks, matteo...here's a start here... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lombardic_language
  19. As per title, what do you think of the 'n' in the centre of the first picture? Lombardic with 'junk,' lombardic but later recut to Roman 'N' or just a plain Roman N and the rest is my imagination?
  20. The same penny but, just wow! Twice as much? Goodness, it's nice, but not that rare and nice! 332374030945
  21. That's got to be out there somewhere on a better coin for investigation. It's a definite something!
  22. Just a little point re diameter...don't forget any metal can weigh the same as gold at a given diameter. Namely, the depth is also important. If it's got a nice quality milled edge and you can rule out electroplating by a combination of correct weight/diameter/thickness, then you're half way there. The other half would be design irregularities, and brass, which doesn't tone, or even look like gold unless it's highly polished. A good set of well-calibrated scales will certainly help put your mind at rest. You will seldom find 'modern' gold overweight, if ever. I'm no gold expert, but I've never seen an overweight sovereign.
  23. Ha, that's the one I'm talking about! I bid £123, he won it for £125! 263057398496
  24. Must be trying to impress a posh girl in the local pub with his antiques' trading! ?
  25. Didn't stay on eBay for very long! ? I was reading my old thread on my own Edward Class 1d - you got what you were after, then? Did you see that superb high-class Bristol penny back a bit? Beautiful! I bid about £125 I think it was...did you win that? My example 1d
