Dearest Mother, I am writing this in the trenches in my ‘dug out’ – with a wood fire going and plenty of straw it is rather cosy, although it is freezing hard and real Christmas weather. I think I have seen today one of the most extraordinary sights that anyone has ever seen. About 10 o’clock this morning I was peeping over the parapet when I saw a German, waving his arms, and presently two of them got out of their trench and came towards ours. We were just going to fire on them when we saw they had no rifles, so one of our men went to meet them and in about two minutes the ground between the two lines of trenches was swarming with men and officers of both sides, shaking hands and wishing each other a happy Christmas. This continued for about half an hour when most of the men were ordered back to the trenches. For the rest of the day nobody has fired a shot and the men have been wandering about at will on the top of the parapet and carrying straw and firewood about in the open – we have also had joint burial parties with a service for some dead, some German and some ours, who were lying out between the lines. I don’t know how long it will go on for – I believe it was supposed to stop yesterday, but we can hear no firing going on along the front today except a little distant shelling. We are, at any rate, having another truce on New Year’s Day, as the Germans want to see how the photos come out! The Germans in this part of the line are sportsmen if they are nothing else written by Alfred Dougan Chater in 1914 Found at http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/dec/24/-sp-letter-extraordinary-sights-christmas-day-first-world-war-truce Merry Christmas and a happy new year! May be luck, peace & healthfulness with all of you

English... German.... joint ancestors, same cultural origin. A pity and tragedy that these two people fought two disastrous wars against each other. Britain is very popular in current Germany. My girlfriend is very anglophile, you should have a look into our flat... Union Jack, Tower Bridge, Twinings Tea, shortbread, scones & clotted cream, Take That... Only the Queens bust has to stay within the coin album -

There are no proof and no proof like German 100 Euro Gold coins around. These are business strike coins. I see them every day, these coins have special surface safety features. Only business strike coins own these features, proof coins do not... -

And I got a reply. An employee of Heritage auctions claimed of course, that this particular coin IS a proof coin. He refered to certain literature (eg Krause Mishler and the Austrian coin magazine Money Trend), which claims that the 100 Euro coin was minted in proof only. I told him that this statement is wrong in my opinion and advised him to consider references published in Germany and specialized onto German coinage (mainly Jaeger or Schön respectively, additionally I could have mentioned the magazines MünzenRevue and Münzen & Sammeln as well). In addition I adviced him to contact the official issuing office in Germany. I got no response after that of course. I do not expect any further or changed answer. The short-term financial concerns are too important I guess. I did not tell him, that I am working in the coin business as well and handle that kind of coins on daily bases. They all were business strikes of course and I never had a proof in hand. I won´t change their mind anyhow. At least I know where I can buy the coins of my personal interest. -

No, I didn't mean it literally. I meant "not the same coin" in the sense of the original photograph is misleading. In other words you thought you were getting the coin as it looked in the seller's photograph, which of course it wasn't. AHHHHHH got the point language can be so simple... sometimes it is not... C'est vrai, n'est-ce pas? Nix verstehen... You may contact me in English, German aaaannnnnnddd...... Greek. Like your Prince Phillip, I have German and Greek roots too. In contrast to that I do not speak the language of diplomats (French in this case) -

I would like to add that example. Here a German 100 Euro commemorative coin 2002 offered for auction. It was graded PR70 http://coins.ha.com/itm/germany/world-coins/germany-federal-republic-gold-proof-100-euro-2002-a-pr70-ultra-cameo-ngc-/a/231450-62174.s Needless to say that German 100 Euro commemorative coins were never minted & released in proof A first strike is a top grade of course, but still no proof (Polierte Platte)!
