Elizabeth II gold & platinum 80th birthday set?
Chingford replied to Coinery's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Surely only the RM issue sovs and their multiples...? I was trying to establish the coins within the set by any distinguishing marks, legends, If they were sovereigns, I would have thought identification and valuation of the set could have been made before now, as you rightly say only one source, but looking like a sovereign doesn't necessarily make it a sovereign, several private mints make crown sized pieces that are not crowns etc, just thinking outside the box. -

Could you help with some of the following, help reduce my search results What country were they issued for, what is the Obv Legend on the coins, and/or on the slip provided, is there a mint name PobJoy, Westminster or the like also Images of the slip and both sides of a coin, and/or the presentation set as a whole There are several providers/sets of this nature, need to narrow it down alot. -
Anbesol, avaliable over the Chemist counter, works like oil of cloves but much more effect and none of the horrible aftertaste,
-
I have attached some obv images Final image, as Red has said the die has started to crack (R in VICTORIA), becoming unservicable, so probably not many struck after this example

I think a big cheer for Cameron, stood his ground, followed by the disgruntled rebuffs from both Labour and liberals who seemly would have signed away our rights without hesistation. The french/german goverments wanted control of the city of London, the financial institute and heart of the UK, might as well elected a french/german colilition. The bottom line was that any institute trading in Euros should do so within the Eurozone, The only three natons that show growth within the Euro are France, Germany and Belgium, the sanctions that they are driving through protect themselves, no other If Greece had taken a referendum, and withdrawn from the treaty, there was nothing to stop them, it hadn't been thought through and not written within the Mastrict treaty that any country joining would ever withdraw, I am sure the new treaty closes that gap.

I have a boot in each camp here, I whole heartitly agree with Rob, why do I need someone to tell me the coin type/grade, that is an opinion I will form for myself, no matter what the label says, but also agree with Markn that with the cross border divide, if in a country where the coin is foreign I have some protection for its type and value.

Have they recorded the coin as A over V or just simply recorded the date/type

You should be able plug in the USB, refuse the format, but be able to list the drive, open it and view its content, copy/cut the files to a new folder, format your USB then copy back the info you have sorted

What grade would you say this was?

You need to reduce the images to 150kb to post direct, 'click to attach files' below, select images and then select 'Add to post', you will have to post each seperately if they are more than the 150kb max. for each post. alternatively a link to photobucket or the like cane be embedded into the post. The Copper series is littered with overdates, double strikings and recut dies, the 54/3 is a distinctive type, once you have seen one there is no mistaking it. John
-
Azda, you are correct it is a partially block die, there are also examples of 1843 penny DFF, both described in Bramahs, on the better grade examples the lower part of the E is still traceable and repairs to the E are evident on the later dates.

Coin dealer in London
Chingford replied to seuk's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Isn't the London Coin Fair on 19th November, at the Holiday Inn Near Russell Square Tube Charing Cross fair entrance is opposite Embankment Station exit, in the corner between the two Coffee shops, took me ages to find on my first visit -
I have seen 8 since the first was identified two years ago, recently two have sold on Ebay as V over A, the Australian Ebay one shown (£235) and one a couple of weeks previously (£105),they were both in similar condition to your own, both of the auction winners knew the variety, and are forum members, I was an underbidder on both! Peckris is right when he says the Copper series is littered with similar overstrikes, deliberate as with dates and repairs for longivity of the die, but errors in spelling and setting out of the legends are less common, usually it is the first/last letters of the text, as with V/A, the first of VICTORIA, and the last of GRATIA, but there are a couple where the letters are side by side in the legend and have inadvertently been swapped.

Yo still have the receipt? Its not for sale until tomorrow...I always liked the poles...or the ones that picked my asparagus or sliped down poles.I will fack him till he pops. Peter, not sure if it helps, but when I sold some silver on Ebay, the highest bidder had a UK registered account, but paid through a PayPal account with a Bulgarian address, I phoned Ebay and they let me cancel the transaction, as it was false representation.

Royal Mint Commemorative tat
Chingford replied to Red Riley's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Worth checking the Isle of Man Crowns, Pobjoy is a private mint that knocks out commemorative crowns for Isle of Man, Gibralter and a few other Islands, could have some silver content -
Sell Gold Online!
Chingford replied to TomGoodheart's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
One I have sold silver to, and pays cash is http://www.gold-traders.co.uk very reliable and fair, Michael Gouby found a shop in Hatton Garden that paid a little better, nearer the current market prices, he is away until the 19th so I can't get details. The best tend to give you a guaranteed price before you send the items, any that do not offer a valuation should have dot CON in their URL. -

Cleaned Coins
Chingford replied to Red Riley's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Seems to be becoming the norm in the USA, even NGC have their own 'conservors' http://www.ncscoin.com/ I can see the need of treating a coin that has come out of the ground to preserve it for the next generation, but this company approaches numismatics like any other antique, and actually promotes enhancing the apperance of the coins, Personally I think it is a fine line between cleaning/preserving and maybe the way things are going attitudes will change and there will be a little more tolerance towards not only gently preserving, but also the cleaning surfaces, legends and incuse areas of built up dirt. But i would definately say that there will never be a place in Numismatics for the Cillit bang/duraglit brigade -
Latest Acquisition
Chingford replied to joey's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Cameo is a term used referring to Proof strikes that have a difference in contrast between the portrait, and the surface of the field around the portrait, When dies are made, the designed incuse areas are sandblasted to give a frosty, non-mirrored appearance, while the fields around the figure are polished to give a mirror-like finish.
