September LCA Catalogue Now Online
Chingford replied to Sword's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think the answer is simpler than it seems Victorian copper pennies and Halfpennies from all had serif 4s up to 44, where the serif was only used for half the coins struck, both serif and plain end. After 44 all 4s where plain end, the next example where 4 was the last number was in 54, these have crosslet ends, both Halfpennies and Pennies. It could be that the 4 being the last number in the date was subjected to more stress and therefore damaged, a more sturdier design was used, the crosslet, and used in subsequent date ending in 4 -

Going from Proof Sets I have handled and the shape it would be worth looking at Sudan, Swaziland or Ceylon, Royal Mint produced coinage for all around that time -

I think the UK is currently the second biggest international arms seller, a legacy of conflicts like the Falkland Islands were by a smaller force won basically due to superior weaponry, the Harrier jet, sea wolf, sea skua and sea dart missile systems all untested until this conflict, the success of these systems had all and sundry raising hands saying me, me, I want one of those. We have sold larger weapon systems particularly armoured vehicles and Planes and we have also sold munitions, bombs and missiles, to most of the UAE, Indonesia/Malaya and others in the past and some others currently, but none of the weapons associated with these terrorists, we currently do not make Kalashnikovs In fact most of the weapons and munitions used by the terrorists were those left behind by a fleeing Iraqi army -

1923 Belgium 1 Franc but what is the mint error?
Chingford replied to bhx7's topic in Enquiries about Non British coins
It looks like a piece of the Obv die has broken away, there is no imprint on the Cud which suggests a void in that area, and the blank part on the Rev looks to be a similar size as the Rev die has nothing to press against. Do the two impressions line up -
Probably grease spots from the die, you wont be able to remove them, if unhappy, ask to exchange for one without

I heard sometime last year that a mint roll(s) of CHP1841 had been found, the finder sold them with multiple listings on Ebay, price started top end but flooded the market, in the end they were selling in bulk for less than half book price. There are several now in slabs both this side and the other side of the pond, all very high grades, similar happened with CF1825 a few years ago, too many too soon for the market to absorb and keep price buoyant. There are CHP forgeries, dates I have seen are 1825 and 1826 modern looking contemporary copies, 1845, 1848, 1851 and 1860 there is an error with all, an exaggerated long serif to the first 1 of the date, and the identical flat worn reverse used for all.

Today's Spink auction - some interesting observations
Chingford replied to 1949threepence's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
That would seem logical, it is the only GeoIV Penny reverse not previously recorded as Copper proof Raised line on Saltire, so not A, no straps to Sandal so not C, price is similar to those achieved with the other Copper proof Pennies of GeoIV, not to be confused with the Bronzed Copper Proofs which are a dark red/brown in colour
