old coin collection

I'm probably the least qualified person on this forum to vote but I'd say GVF - Where's Derek (Red) when you need him? -
Happy birthday both.I am impressed you are both revealing your ages too! I would stay in tonight though if the weathers anything like we have here!

Thanks for posting that interesting link Seuk - there's even some information about engraved coins and love tokens to be found within. -
1845 Victoria Crown - Cleaned?
Debbie replied to coinmerchant's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Did you mean NOT agressively cleaned there Dave? Great crown which hopefully will re-tone nicely over the years. Do you think that the different % of silver for example pre and post 1920 tone differently? I'm buying unc George v and George v1 for my OWN collection still Dave! -

Thanks for your thoughts Peck and Dave. Perhaps there is an investment opportunity to buy up cleaned coins for any future grandchildren then?! I would be interested to see any cleaned and nicely re-toned coins that members may have? I have one here, it doesn't look too bad but you can still tell it has been cleaned in hand. Shame its not a 1905! -
1845 Victoria Crown - Cleaned?

This has prompted me to ask something I have been meaning to ask and keep forgetting. How much approximately % wise would you expect to deduct from the list price if a coin has been cleaned? I know that it would depend on each coin, but say for instance it is EF, obviously been cleaned but begun to re-tone,would you expect to sell / buy at a lesser price? It's not such an issue for me with engraved coins etc as I expect some to be cleaned, but as a shilling collector I would be interested to hear what other think. - sorry to high jack your thread coin merchant! -
Nothing to do with me!

Well it is square - so squarecoinman could be interested?

And from me to all too! I haven't been on the forum for just over a week and there seems to be so to catch up on.....this is not good when one is supposed to be starting work again!!!
-
Following on from Tom’s post about lucky tokens in coin acquisition of the week (sorry been off the forum for a while with work deadlines so just catching up!) I find myself quite taken with coins which have been stamped or engraved with initials (love tokens I presume?) How would this affect the grade and the price of a coin in general and where would you suggest I might find some nice examples of these?

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone from me too (whatever your names are! )

I have used Money claim quite a few times for late paying advertisers (customers), even on amounts as low as £40. Usually they pay up when you send them the link along with a final warning.

Hope its a good one over there with you!

Afternon all. I have just got this today and I thought I'd post it up as its square. Just got me wondering about other square coins - have there been many issued?
-
Wow have never seen one of those before! That must weigh quite a bit. How do you store pieces like that, I would imagine that they are fairly valuable? Thanks for sharing - off to Google Swedish plate money now.

I have Dave's books now - although they are still sat in my room unopened as they are meant to be a Christmas present. Come 25th I'll be educating myself too! -

That's interesting Sword. So legally you could pay for something with a "deformed" coin then? Not that the seller is likely to accept it mind -
Thanks Richard for showing this. Bit out of my budget unfortunately - its not really square though anyway (so I keep telling myself!)
-
Oh have not heard of there being a different metal used for each side on a coin before - fascinating stuff and interesting history. Thanks for sharing. I do find square coins to be aesthetically pleasing on the eye. I even have a square wedding ring, which I found in a junk shop - but that's another story!

Hi Square Coin Man, thank you for your answer and information and welcome to the forum! I actually collect engraved coins and love tokens, it was just because that one happened to be square I thought it a little unusual and lead me to ask about square coins. I would guess that you collect them? I have so far resisted going down that avenue myself, but please do post any examples you may have as I am sure some of use would be interested in seeing them!

Its interesting thinking about holes in coins. I wonder if it would've devalued / made them invalid at the time. Would for instance a holed two pound coin today be accepted, would the bank still honor its face value and exchange it for another as they do ripped notes? Perhaps we ought to experiment!
